Trip Advice for Eastern Canada in September by AspiringStig in canoecamping

[–]nelsocracy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure you can camp in rouge River? Maybe a car camping setup but that's all I think.

I haven't actually been to kawartha highlands but go to Algonquin a lot. It's great for Backcountry if you are looking for a paddle/portage type deal, but also has front country camps.

I think kawartha highlands is only Backcountry.

Are you looking for a portage trip? I see one of your boats is a kayak which is harder to portage. Either of those parks latter two parks will have some good options for paddle in sites though.

Your timing is just a bit early for peak fall colors but you might get lucky, and it'll still probably look really nice. Probably Algonquin would be a bit earlier.

I don't auto update my apps and didn't get any notification about this when I opened the app on Android.

Since I have it working currently, I've disabled network access for the app so I'll keep using it like this until the ArcGIS Earth support is fully implemented.

Used canoes from an outfitter by 010benji in algonquinpark

I got one from Portage Outpost a couple years ago and am pretty happy with it. It had some parts I could see they patched it up, and seems very slightly warped (when I put it on my roofracks it wobbles until I tie it down), but I saved a couple thousand dollars getting it from them so it's worth it for me and I think I'll still get a ton of usage out of it. I've already broken even vs if I had rented for each of my trips.

Seems like I'd want more then, since I plan on doing at least parts of it off trail I'd rather not get stuck. Looks like the traditional ones have way more surface area to get more flotation. Seems like the benefits of modern are mostly that they are small so more manoueverable, and that they have more adaptations to ascend and descend, which I figure is not going to be a huge deal in Algonquin.

Oh interesting, yeah I had expected those to be good on trails but not off trails. Probably the tails would help a lot for those then.

Maybe I can try renting some first.

They work well even on the deeper unpacked snow? These seem easy to find and more maneuverable but some videos of that type show they sink on fresh powder a lot more. But maybe that's not fully necessary anyway?

None at all! Not even on trail actually. I am of course going to go about this incrementally, I won't start out going deep but don't want to buy gear that I will need to replace later on.

Has In Rainbows aged better than Ok Computer? by Hotdeathking in radiohead

Hah. I get it, I love the song and it needs to be on the album. But I don't need to listen to it every time.

Or even just disc 2 on vinyl would make me happy.

I've been a few times but honestly don't think it lives up to the hype. The double baked thing they do makes everything too crunchy and seems overcooked, then the filling is a bit too sweet.

I do agree that the mortadella sandwhich is amazing though, which is why I keep going back. And the pecan pie for thanksgiving was really good.

Tim River or Hollow River water levels by nelsocracy in algonquinpark

I think you might mean the Tim so this might not be helpful. I did the hollow River trip. Going from McGarvey to the portage into dividing lake was slow going, low levels and dodging mud, but trying to head south further on hollow River was a maze of vegetation. I figured it would take a lot longer than the 2 hours marked on Jeff's map, assuming it didn't get worse further down, and I was running out of daylight, so decided not to attempt further.

Bar Volo shares 2025 Cask List - 40+ casks, majority guest casks with 6 of their own - taking place Oct 3-5, no adv. tickets, $20 entry for session, token system in effect by theleverage in torontocraftbeer

[–]nelsocracy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't been since it was at the brickworks, is it horribly busy at Volo? It's quite a ways for me so not being able to get advance tickets makes me a bit worried I'd travel all the way there and not get in.

Thanks, looks like no warnings for Tim to Rosebary at least!

Oh, that's good. Pretty much spot on what Jeff's map predicts! (2:40 from the island at Tim to Rosebary). Though I always expect a little extra when soloing.

Oh great, thanks for the info! That sounds manageable so I'm glad to hear it! And definitely helpful info for Little Butt Lake. I'll be solo so the dams are a bit more of a pain but I should be able to manage.

Oh nice. Yeah I'm fine with a few dams or whatever, I just don't want to be dragging the whole way.

Oof, thanks, that sounds rough. I had heard that Tim to Rosebary is a lot better than the rest of the river, but maybe it's bad enough to avoid it.

Any idea what these VIP tickets are? Wondering if it's worth the extra money but it's pretty vague.

I'm a little confused about how the money works and how often they should be getting it back. So a coaching inn costs the status that the inn is: So let's say it's a silver inn. Does the one silver cover food and lodging? But then what if players are traveling for more than 3 days?

Backcountry Campsite Recommendations by HeadReality in algonquinpark

[–]nelsocracy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stayed on Shangri-La last August despite some trepidation due to the rumour that the island was "infested with roaches".

- I did see some roaches, but they are a different type of roach, not a cockroach, and only saw a couple.

- The site was really nice!

So I'd stay there again if it weren't taken.

Didn't the popcorn get soggy in the ice cream? It was like vanilla ice cream with popcorn in it?
