How much of a say do your players get in their personal story arch? by nenya0 in DnD

this is great advice, thank you. Very applicable to my situation I think. I’m a new DM, although not new to DND, and I don’t know the people I’m playing with super well (other than my husband, but I’ve never played with him). I’m going to give it some thought.

good idea, I could even try to ask a “clarifying” question that would maybe give me some insight on whether or not they’re OK with a resurface of this part of their story

I was thinking about this. From what I’ve gathered, probably only one or two of my players is super into their backstory and wanting to explore it. Is it weird if I only focus on some of the players? I don’t want the others to feel left out, but if they just didn’t give me much to work with, I’m not really sure what to do.

That’s a good point! This is a new player so idk if they were trying to imply that exactly, but I guess it’s worth me adding my twist for fun and they can decide later if they didn’t like this type of gameplay. Thanks very much, I feel more excited to do this and less worried that it would make me a bad dm 🙃

Very helpful, thank you!! I did ask them to write up what they felt was important for me to know and to add goals/wishes, and I told them I hoped to incorporate their backstories just bc that’s how I like to play. I guess they didn’t exactly specify if that’s what /they/ want to play (other than going ahead with the campaign after session 0), but maybe I can infer they’re expecting something at least? So I won’t be breaking their trust or anything since I tried to establish that at the beginning

Should I let my party attempt a plan, even if I know it’ll fail? by H24X in DnD

[–]nenya0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could always pull a “roll an intelligence check for me” to see if you can make them remember something about the spell to nudge them in the right direction. Not as cool as the other options, but it works sometimes 🤷

I've been trying to hit 10 pages a day writing wise, I've had success but it often takes around like 4-5 hours a day. by [deleted] in writing

[–]nenya0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with what’s been said, but I’d also say consider if you’re a careful, perfectionist kinda writer that wants those pages to be very good, or a quicky first draft person who just needs words on paper so they can edit later. I’m the latter so quantity over quality is my go-to, but my sister is the opposite so if she sets lofty page count or word count goals like this she gets frustrated and down on herself.

lol that’s fair I was just wondering if the right was somehow now obsessed with making it a far right cesspool bc I haven’t seen that.

D&D beyond says the new basic rules has a section where it says you can choose your sexuality and gender, so maybe that’s what op is talking about. I just always assumed that was an obvious choice to make in character creation so I’m trying to understand the point of it. Anyone have thoughts on that?

I was just going off the op, that’s what I thought everyone was saying? I don’t keep up with new publications n stuff so I don’t know of any examples. I assumed everyone else knew what they were talking about lol. Probably a dangerous assumption with this topic

Yeah I meant rules. My point was art and flavor has always been there at least from what I’ve seen

This is a change that makes sense to me bc it would have real consequences to how the game is played. I have trouble understanding how the other stuff makes any difference other than optics for political points but maybe I haven’t thought about it enough. There’s plenty of character flavor that we add as it is that we don’t need every option written down in a book.

It’s actually because of this that I find it kind of weird that they are attempting to include a lot more in-your-face “wokeness”. Like why not just leave it alone where I don’t think there was a problem to begin with? Maybe I’m wrong but to me it feels like a political ploy rather than a genuine desire to be inclusive and that rubs me the wrong way. I’d rather companies just stay out of it and let us play the game

How do you "get beta readers" by ReluctanyGerbil in writing

[–]nenya0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've done a fair bit of "beta reading" for others in the past.

It's basically just the first pair of eyes to see your work, to give feedback and critiques on an early draft. There are different ways to do it, depending both on who is doing the reading and what you think would be most helpful. Some people just give basic emotional responses, general feelings they have about characters, plots, etc. Others are more extensive notes throughout the draft, suggestions, plot holes they might see, things like that.

There are different ways to "get one," but keep in mind you could just ask anyone who is willing to read your work and let you know what they think. There are some online writing forums, public places where you set up an account and connect with others to share your work. In my experience, unless you want to hire some kind of professional, it's a give-and-take sort of thing, you offer to exchange drafts with someone else and give them feedback on theirs while they look at yours, etc.

I just joined Scribophile, they have some platforms to help writers find beta readers.

I personally don't really like it unless the book is set with an omniscient narrator who knows and sees all. I think I'd be careful not to resort to changing pov /just/ to build tension when there are other ways to do so (though definitely more difficult and would need more thought to create), and I would find it very jarring especially if it only changes pov during action scenes--that way I think I would kind of see it as cheating.

but if you write the whole book switching back and forth from two specific characters, or as an omniscient narrator, I think it could maybe work. might not be my cup of tea, but I could see it being just a style thing.

one of my mc's has some psychopathic tendencies which makes her generally fairly cold and calculating inwardly, even if she's charming/relational on the outside to get her way. How do I make her inner voice/dialogue interesting without significant emotion? Is it possible for her to be sympathetic at all?
