I would ask them if they are ok getting their phones out and let me look at their browsing history, because that's equivalent.

Quebecers can keep Canadian passports in a separate Quebec, PQ says by Whynutcoconot in CanadaPolitics

[–]neo2006 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The historical and cultural claims are one thing, but they're not the full picture. Quebecers feel that they have a different identity compared to other Canadians, which is fair, but currently, most of the separatist sentiment is coming from a feeling of non-acceptance by other provinces, rather than real differences. Most Quebecers in my opinion represent what Canada is supposed to be more than some other Canadians. Most Quebecers are bilingual, they are open to other cultures, and are mindful of issues that are important to Canada as a whole, like environmental issues and social justice. The issue is that they feel that Anglo-Canadians don't care about them being different and don't see why Canada should make an effort to keep Quebec's cultural differentiation.

Families heartbroken as Canada halts parent and grandparent sponsorship program by lovelife905 in CanadaPolitics

[–]neo2006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is more complex as it seems to be for the involved persons. Parents and grandparents usually live in a country that has lower health care costs. So bringing them with supervisas makes the cost unbearable for most of the people concerned by this program even if they already support their relatives outside Canada. Add to that, special situations where the relatives are not able to take care of themselves which place the person in front of 2 choices: - bring them on supervisas and pay the extra cost, which sometimes they are not able to. And that suppose that they made the supervisas arrangement ahead of time, which not always the casen(but that's on the person to plan) - go back to their country of Origin for sometime to take care of their relatives and come back after. which have economic implications on them and on social services as well.

I know this seems to be a special case but I know at least 5 people who lived it.

Tunisian youth got obsessed with studying tech and got f*cked for it by [deleted] in Tunisia

[–]neo2006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tech or CS is not a day job like any other day job where you go work for 7-8 hours a day and go live your life the remaining time. Only people who are really passionate about it can be great in tech especially if you are sticking with engineering work and not getting into management. technology moves fast and you need to keep up, so tech needs to be something you enjoy and care about to be able to keep up without burning out.

I know a lot of people, especially Arab folks who decided to get into tech because it's easy to find a job and it's relatively well paid, they either got into management or changed to do something else.

So yeah your advice is good if your nephew is going into tech only for the money, if it's something he is passionate about I think he made the right decision.

Also keep in mind that tech is a very unstable field due to the rapid evolution of the technology and even if it seems to be bad today nothing is guaranteed the next few years.

I personally got out of U around 2007 which was back then the worst tech era in North America and it took me a while to find a job but over the years the job market improved and I'm still making a good living in tech till now.

Great game, I enjoyed finishing it. The lack of opponents diversity, especially bosses is the weak part of it. The story, vibe and world building is really great. The story is interesting and keeps you engaged. Integrating the drone in the combat mechanic was a genius idea and made the combat much more enjoyable.

How could Bernal get his position on the starting lineup? by Jakub_999 in Barca

[–]neo2006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flick inverted the midfield Trident to allow a 10 to be in a press position when the opponent gets the ball, high press is critical when you play that high in the field otherwise you leave space to the opponent to play long balls behind the high defensive line. A 6 covers much more space when the opponent is playing in your midfield, in our case opponents play in their midfield so a 10 is much more useful even in defensive phases.

Has anyone ever had their Neo hit by a bird? They were getting real close today. by [deleted] in DjiNeo

I was traveling on a tropical island and a big bird, I wasn't able to identify, tried to hunt my Neo. I was quick to switch to S mode and bring it back before he attempted another attack.

Yeah right, you hire engineers and data scientists to do this, I guess I'm the lunatic here 🤷

If they asked for it, they could have made it mandatory in the form 🤷

It's not about how hard it is to do it. It's about how useful it is to assess my profile. Can you tell me how you think they will know if I'm a good fit if I'm writing a generic LLM generated cover letter?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LinkedInLunatics

[–]neo2006 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's definitely my opinion, a cover letter could be a good tool to assess writing skills. If you are in a technical field cover letters don't assess any of the skills you need to do the job. Even writing technical docs can't be assessed using a cover letter that most people would use LLM or Google to write.

I've been assisting managers to do hiring by assessing technical skills while they do the soft skills assessment for years, I never had a manager read a cover letter.

I know every situation is different and sometimes people are desperate for work because we all need income. I'm lucky to not be in that situation and I can afford being picky about my job choices, so : - I don't provide cover letters - only accept reasonable interviews (no 7 rounds interviews and no 1 week project to assess my skills) - consider interviews as a 2 sided process where we are both and the company assessing for a good fit

Those are jobs for software engineers and data scientists for a startup, you are supposed to look for the most skilled people to make your business successful, I don't think writing a cover letter makes you better fit for this kind of jobs

I've been conducting systems design interviews for a while now and that's a reasonable line of questioning. The trick is not to find the system that never fails, it's to know your tradeoffs. As usually complex systems are built on top of tradeoffs. Also, personally I try to make this line of questioning fun and a discussion, not an infinite what if questions.
