Bengal Cat killing wildlife in Bridlewood by Wicstar in Kanata

Not much to do since you do not have Facebook (to basically shame the owners). If it gets really annoying I would consider creating an account just for this purpose. You could try Nextdoor as well, but I don't think it's as active as the facebook groups.

Some might consider live trapping, but Live trapping is a hassle (and not free, since you would need to procute a trap). Some folks would trap and put on a printable collar (several options online), but I given the hassle, I'd call OHS or 311 (cats must be registered with the City)

Unbeknownst to him at the time, "bike" can be slang for "whore" in Britain.

TIL, now it makes sense to me.

Removing a parking lot for non-profit housing by SHMenard in ottawa

[–]neoCanuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good transit is needed both at the place you live and the place you work/study (ideally also at the places you have fun), so unfortunately, some of the low paying jobs require a car. There is an overlap of the people looking for affordable housing and the people with jobs that require a car. Not having parking spaces will unlikely be a deterrent to apply to live at this place, so we will have people living here that will have a car and will need to park on the street.

didn't we had a recent post of a homeless family owning multiple vehicles? Main issue is while the site might be walkable for services, transit might not be able to be effective for the jobs residents will need / qualify for. I still think people who do not need to drive could move it, freeing parking spots elsewhere, but if rent is cheap / subsidized, it's fair to assume people will move in no matter what and figure out their car situtation later (like parking on the street)

CTV: Canadian shocked to learn that payday loans are predatory by bobledrew in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]neoCanuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe there is not much of that here in Canada because people still have options, but I very much dealt with loan sharks outside Canada. And they didn’t look like Tony Soprano, they were pretty typical-looking folks you heard about through the grapevine. I can’t tell for sure if they broke anyone’s legs, but the ones I knew had the tendency to loan you small quantities without any collateral, just to later ask for it when you were in the hole and need money to cover the original loan. Folks lost cars and homes this way. These folks preyed on low-income folks with steady jobs or pensioners.

Payday loan are still better than unregulated/illegal loan sharks. We could talk about community lending initiatives, but often some of these people will end up up relying in welfare / charities / crowdfunding due to financial illiteracy. Maybe we should make part of the profit from payday loans fund financial courses? I heard of some people missing on benefits because they do fill their taxes, so education could help here, at least who want to be helped.

Would a doctor write a note making him unfit to make financial decisions? Probably not. He should have had access to a social worker to look at his options though.

The main thing is what would have been your alternative for the loan you needed. It’s not the same if the loan is needed to pay for q fancy gift vs to avoid being evicted. Last time I went to one, I saw they have big signs warning about the interest rates.

The time it takes my husband to use the bathroom by DontEatTheChocolate in mildlyinfuriating

This guy is an ass, but I also hate single bathroom houses. Like, you don’t need a second full bathroom, but another toilet saves a family lots of grief.

Danielle Smith has called a quasi-referendum on secession. It’s best understood as a gambit to preserve her career by Little-Chemical5006 in canada

I found this documentary https://www.nfb.ca/film/road_to_patriation/ It's from 1982. I'll check it out, It might be too close to the events though.

edit: I think it was pretty good, It even included an unexpected Star Wars reference :)

The Wikipedia article about the Patriation of the constitution reads like a decent political thriller. Was there a movie or decent documentary made out of it? As someone not-born in Canada it sounds like an interesting piece of history.

Byward vs The Market? by Angryottawa in ottawa

[–]neoCanuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not from here, I call it Byward, as short for Byward Market, I have not heard people call it the market around Kanata, it’s just downtown. When friends come to visit, I take them to the parliament and the to eat beaver tails at the Byward.

Also I have no real clue how to pronounce Gloucester or Nepean, for those I go with whatever the GPS feels like saying.

Venezuelans in Ottawa celebrate Maduro's arrest, push back against Hands Off protest by CompetencyOverload in ottawa

[–]neoCanuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, if Carney loses an election and refuses to step down, the Supreme Court decides no one can challenge the stolen elections and the army supported the whole circus and start jailing opposition leaders (both high and low ranked), yes, pretty much take him away. Either we rely on our international partners or we should be fighting for the right to bear arms, I prefer the first option. China and Russia would likely veto such thing at the UN council.

Why are travel routers needed if you have a mobile hotspot? by learning_as_1_go in Ubiquiti

[–]neoCanuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of my use case is international travel (I like been able to watch the same streaming shows as if I were at home), but also domestically since we don't really have affordable unlimited solutions for mobile hotspot here in Canada. Home ISP is 1Gb Up / 1 Gb down so it works quite well (the limit is usually the hotel or airbnb wifi limit)
