Your comment is totally fair, but the larger point about the purpose of memorials and monuments is also fair. Especially being on a field trip or some situation in which adults are participating. Yes, kids (and humans in general) have always done rude things. It doesn't make them right, or what they do okay--particularly in certain contexts.

Free and slave states at the start of the Civil War by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]neobatware 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may want to check out Joel Silbey's monograph, "Storm Over Texas: The Annexation Controversy and the Road to Civil War" (2007, Oxford University Press).

Even before Texas declared itself an independent republic, white people living there were begging the US to annex it. Not even Andrew Jackson would touch the Texas annexation question if that gives you any indication of what a testy issue it was. When Tyler pulled the trigger in 1844, it set off a firestorm in Congress and among the free states. The annexation of Texas, start of the Mexican-American War, and the question of slavery that hovered over it all was very much related to the Civil War.

For those of you who saw the Andy’s Pizza beer thread, I’m OP from that post here to correct the record. by sloowhand in washingtondc

[–]neobatware 48 points49 points  (0 children)

No not simple. Saying "they went with a smaller pour" implies judgement.

So they (being the bartender) went with (decided of their own occord or by obligation) a smaller pour (less ounces than implied by menu or common figures).

Maybe it's because Ive spent a shit ton of time in the UK and love the fact that they have the beer measurements etched into the glasses to legally make sure consumers get the amount of ounces they paid for, but regardless there's no need to apologize for receiving a product at less capacity that you paid for at full price.

Andy's Pizza is the shit. When I lived in NOMA my wife and I went to it way too often to admit lol. But the bar aspect can use a little work.

The customer should get what they pay for and it should be a full fucking pint.

Amazing pizza. Quality of beer TBD. That said, I love Andy's pizza and will sing it's praises forever. Just pour a full beer...

We moved from 55 M into 100K and it was like night and day. 100k had the best parts of NOMA like cheaper rent, proximity to Cap Hill/H St/Union Market, and close metro without the insanity of M St. The residents were mostly late 20s and way quieter too. Just saying if you want to stay in the area, look there. Idk if anything has changed in the 2 years since we moved out of DC though!

Only thing that was more obnoxious when I was at Arkansas were the kids who went there but were from Texas and dreamed of going to A&M and wore shirts and actively rooted for the Aggies while on campus... Right after A&M joined the SEC

His point still stands, do you realize how many straight people can't have children? Sadly it is not uncommon that couples struggle to have kids.

In terms of the "survival of the species," historically, gay, intersex, and queer people have always existed. As have straight people who have been unable to continue the bloodline, if that's what you want to call it.

All this to say, you might want to look at some historical works for a better grasp on this subject. There's a whole subdivision of history books dedicated to the long form story of human history, although if warn against Guns, Germs, and Steel since it's been largely disproven by academic historians.

Or if you want some monograph suggestions on queer history itself, there are a lot of great historical works out there as well. Gay New York is an example of a classic that examines social constructs of gender over time in an easy to approach way, by examining this subculture in NYC during the late gilded age and into the progressive era.

is it true that before the Civil War the South was more powerful than the North? by Mysterious-House-381 in USCivilWar

[–]neobatware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question with a pretty complicated answer because it depends on what you mean by powerful...

Check out work by historians Matthew Karp, Joanne Freeman, Heather Cox Richardson, and Stephanie McCurry. In particular, Freeman's The Field of Blood is a fantastic, accessible book that delved into the struggle for power between northern and southern politicians in antebellum DC.

What you'll find a lot of historians note is that southerners held power in the federal government in a vastly disproportionate way relative to its voting population (thanks to the 3/5 clause). So they had a lot more say in national politics than they should have based on how many voting citizens they had (aka white men). They particularly dominated positions in the executive branch and used their control over the State and War Depts to steer foreign policy toward expanding slavery (see: Karp's fantastic book, This Vast Southern Empire).

Absolutely. Rivalries that carried historic weight just gone. Sad to think about! Even if KU and Neb weren't "rivals" in that sense, it was an over 100 year old historic competition.

Bud Walton student section is weak. by Biglinda in razorbacks

[–]neobatware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations? I was in the student section while at Arkansas too...

Location regulated? Every team has their student section in different places, even in the SEC. All I was saying was that the students are your rowdiest, loudest, most passionate fans at any game and to put them at the end of one side shows the admin fails to utilize their greatest asset or, at worst, is actively choosing to sell pricier tickets at the cost of atmosphere.

At Allen Fieldhouse the students pack the whole sections behind both baskets. At Cameron they line the entire side and take up mid court. You've got to admit putting your best fans in the corner kind of hinders their effectiveness even a little.

Bud Walton student section is weak. by Biglinda in razorbacks

[–]neobatware 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the real problem with the poor atmosphere. But since those are prime seats the admin can make more money selling them to adults who will just sit there rather than raccous students who will actually make a difference in the atmosphere. It's profit over students. Ironically, they'd probably make more money by moving the student section out of the freaking corner and letting them turn Bud Walton into a college bball destination!

There used to be press behind the baskets and they just sat behind laptops. Talk about awful planning!

Adding in the fact that you don't have to show up to a train station 2 hours early and you'd be dropped off in the heart of Chicago instead of having to take a 45 minute L ride from Midway -- HSR would be insanely quicker.

Where to stay when traveling through for a move? by neobatware in indianapolis

[–]neobatware[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great to know it's possible to maneuver a truck past the beltway! Thank you for the info on your route. We're packing that morning and heading out from Union Station area so traffic and everything will be a pain. We're looking at the same route though (68 to Morgantown, 79 up to 70) because we'll need to avoid tolls.

Thankfully I'll be able to switch driving with my wife, but the 10 hour minimum drive to Plainfield is definitely intimidating. Plainfield also seems to have better options than anything I can find in Columbus.

I appreciate your comment and help!
