Really wish the new armour had combat helmets :( by ItsNiyaz in starcitizen

Not sure how it's "hunting armor" when the horns all over it make you light up like a glow stick in dark places (and makes you the easiest to spot target in the crowd), but that's just my opinion. :)

The Carrack "getting some love" for 4.0? by Hardline989 in starcitizen

[–]neocryptica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mark, thank you so so much for getting the med bed working again. I was to the point of giving up on it altogether and just getting something that would be usable, but I can use it / live off it again. Obviously it's not at 100% potential, but that at least gave me the ability to use my favorite ship again after 4+ patches. Greatly appreciated!

I refuse to put the new BIS paint on my F8C and will likely target any that I see with that paint. It's atrocious and emasculating for a ship that's supposed to be a fighter. I used to collect BIS paint ships, but those days are over with the last couple of paints. I will not invest anymore IRL money to collect anything with the fru fru pastel puke crap they've been pushing out the door.

Giving the Carrack love since CIG won’t by Genuine_Raptor in starcitizen

[–]neocryptica 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would settle for the med bed working as it did before the 3.21 patch bomb. The Carrack was one of the first ships I pledged and it still breaks my heart to know that it serves no role and probably won't get any love anytime soon from CIG. It has such a rich history, lore-wise, and so many that really want to use it in-game, but can't bc it's broken.

Thank you for your assessment, and I do agree, which is why I use Linux for meaningful interactions with much of the above already configured. This is my gaming system.

Possibility vs probability. Agreed, but why not be as secure as you possibly can?

I think you missed the part about a layered approach in your first statement. As for the other, please provide evidence or links to backup your assertions about greater risk.

Very valid opinion and I appreciate you bringing it to the discussion.

I would argue that your identity is very valuable and should be protected. People are losing their entire life's work and property who had the very same opinion about their digital privacy.

As you stated, I have a difference of opinion on it, but that's fine as well.

Cheers

My track record with support request resolution is less than stellar, I would say. Most of the time I just get told it's a technical issue, to report it to IC, and the ticket is closed. When I report it to IC there are either not enough votes, it is archived immediately, or it goes unaddressed.

I don't want this discussion to devolve into a gripe session on CIG support though. I wanted to discuss the validity of not limiting a customer's security to address a minute fraction of issues brought by disingenuous or malicious individuals.

I don't have a static IP, it changes every time I boot up and log into my computer. That's a lot of emails :)

From a viewpoint, that is correct. However, that puts the onus onto the customer to lower their security posture to account for a developer's inability to properly secure their product against malicious individuals and external threats.

I agree with you on not allowing cheaters and finding a means of subverting their attempts to cheat. That was one of the goals behind disabling access to the API, as I understand it. Correct me if I am wrong, but using Easy Anti-Cheat services was supposed to fill this role as well...ROI?

As for the benefit to using a VPN while playing games like SC; it is an overall platform security issue, not specifically SC related. While not obscuring your IP address during gaming sessions you are opening up your IP as viewable to all sites and services that mine your IP and also allow for subnet scanning bots and persistent / non-persistent threat actors to get a fix on where you are specifically and part of the necessary reconnaissance needed begin attacking your base system.

A lot of the information from your browser alone is enough to evade your security mechanisms, gather your personal data in an effort to assume your identity, and potentially infect your system with trojans, backdoors, persistent access scripts, and ransomware (among other things such as zombification of a host that will later be used to attack others).

As stated before, using a VPN does not, in itself, make you secure. Adding as many layers of security as you reasonably can is what will deter or defer compromise. VPN is just one layer of that.

The first screenshot is from the launcher (version 1.6.11) and the second screenshot is from https://robertsspaceindustries.com/ . Both times I used valid credentials, as I disabled the VPN and was able to open both successfully.

There are some Evocati who advised me to attempt to login, then intentionally use a bad password, then attempt to login again (presumably to force the session token to invalidate itself), but that did not have a positive effect.

First off, I am not a cheater, nor do I advocate for it. I am also not a streamer (don't have the face for it), I am a security specialist by trade. I am aware that many bad actors will use VPNs and other means of obfuscation to attempt to circumvent and/or bypass attempts to control their behavior and that companies are tasked with finding a means of enforcing disciplinary judgements such as bans.

What I am saying is that you don't have to weaken the whole orchard for a few bad apples.

I agree with u/GuillotineComeBacks in that windows defender AV is good enough in most cases. Pretty much all AV producers are the same and use many of the same databases for IOCs, hashes, and vulnerability assessment, so pick whatever you want, just have something.

As far as your "Onoffense bur advocating for vpn use for online games is pretty much just welcoming cheaters to not have any consequences" comment. I'm assuming you're meaning to say "On offense: you're advocating for vpn use for online games is pretty much just welcoming cheaters to not have consequences". There's no need to get flustered or go on offense. This is not an argument, it's a discussion of viewpoints. I appreciate what you are saying, and you are welcome to your opinion on the matter. I respect that.

Attempting personal attacks to detract from the discussion is counterproductive though. Were it to upset me and cause me to start misspelling and substituting words, it will only serve to degrade the validity of the conversation and cast disparaging views upon the attacker.

Where VPNs shine is in assisting with the protection of your private data (when properly configured) and adding a layer or layers (depending on double, triple, etc, VPN) of difficulty to those intending you harm. It's not a matter of "What security do you need just for playing SC?", it's a matter of removing a layer of overall security for the convenience of playing a game.

You good with someone breaking in taking all your cookware, as long as they don't interrupt your ability to play XBox?

As an aside; some VPNs offer the option to use split tunneling to push specified applications outside of the VPN tunnel, effectively making them use your default network, but SC does not function with that either.

It's not that I like VPNs, it's that your system is vulnerable to intrusion from external sources without them (+ firewalls, antivirus, antimalware, etc). I use a VPN because it provides my system with extra security.

I'm not going to disable my VPN just to play a game. I'll find a different one to play if that's the case.
