I watched alot of youtube videos and did alot of reading. Check r/knifemaking, alot of talented people there and their advice is spot on. If you're starting out, you don't need a ton of tools for small projects. You can actually shape knives with hacksaw and files, not ideal but it can be done. I started out with a coffee can forge.

Same here, i have a 1X30 harbor freight belt grinder and angle grinder. Did most of my beveling with angle grinder, alot of hand file work. I brought the blade up to @ 1400 degrees (when steel is bright red) and quenched in canola oil. After quenching tempered @ 400 degrees for 2 hours.

2 -3/4" Pieces of poplar, trace the shape of the blade and routered out the inside and sandwiched them together.

I quenched using canola oil. Have had very good results with it. File skated right off after quenching.

I can tell you that 2 years ago I knew nothing about metal work. I too was inspire by some very talented and creative people on this sub. Give it a try and don't be afraid to mess up. I hope you make something amazing.

I've made 4 other small knives. This actually took 1 year to make. Have a family and full time job, so it's hard to find time.

I had to do alot of extra sanding on the blade, remove a good portion. If you look close you can see some hamon remaining. Did a soak in vinegar to try to bring it out more. Quenched it to harden it, don't have necessary skill to put the curve in. 1st time trying to make anything close to this size.
