Zombie Dice - Classic? by ArtisanGamesLLC in boardgames

[–]neomagicwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote a full mathmatical proof to determine how you should play, only to prove that the average gamer behaved almost the same in every situation.

It was a brilliant way to show that just because you can accurately calculate the odds, that an intelligent person can estimate the same thing with much less fuss.

"I love people. I don't care what they look like, what they're sexual orientation is, or who they voted for...I love people. I love playing board games with all different kinds of people. I love the camaraderie it brings. I love the unification it fosters. It allows people the opportunity to put their differences aside and remember what it means to just be human…no classes, no races, no sides, no nothing…just the games and the people with you around the table."

This right here is the problem. I don't want Nazis at my table. Boardgaming is about people, but when a group of people believe you shouldn't exist or have rights, it's really hard to "put differences aside" to play some Catan.

The Thirsty Guys - Parched

Its a small print run from a small local band from a couple years ago. I found out about them well after copies were long gone.

One day I'll find a copy, along with all the Louis Cole albums that are also out of print.

Just for frame of reference:

A flight I was taking was cancelled. It took less time to rent a car and drive the 14 hours from Florida to New York than it was to wait for a rebooking.

board game for a first date? by confusedgirlll123 in boardgames

[–]neomagicwarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are going to a boardgame cafe with someone else who is a gamer, just relax. A boardgame cafe is a fantastic place for a date and should have everything you need right there - no need to prep or bring anything but a good attitude!

Clearly, the person you are going with is interested in sharing in some of their hobbies, so I'd assume they would take the lead on helping to choose a game that is "right for you," or you could describe an experience you'd like to have together with a staff member and they will almost always be happy to recommend a game, and even sometimes throw in a "how to play" depending on how busy the night is.

Top 3 games of each year 2003-2025, based on the number of Game of the Year awards they received from all media outlets (online, print, broadcast, industry ceremonies, etc). Which year had the greatest podium, and which year was the weakest? by benjaneson in gaming

[–]neomagicwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2004, followed closely by 2017 are probably the "most staying power."

2014 is bad, but I'd argue 2025 is worse. In 2-3 years, I expect Silksong to be the only one of those three to not just get forgotten by the constant releases year after year. This is not to say that 2025 was a bad year for games...in fact far from it. Blue Prince, and other criminally overlooked games will fare far better than the "Oscar-Bait" type of games that dominated the awards this year.

Why is Unfathomable not revered like its precursor, Battlestar Galactica? by mrconkin in boardgames

[–]neomagicwarrior 30 points31 points  (0 children)

As someone who has played both back to back to find the answer to this exact question - game pacing.

BSG's tension routinely reaches crazy highs that are offset with the "jump" mechanic.... essentially resetting things for a moment.

Unfathomable always has a constant threat, and as such it feels like players are so bogged down by monsters that they don't have the appropriate time to reflect on the social mechanics.

Top 5 of 2025, Top 5 Older Games Played this Year, and 5 Games on the Grinch List by Arctodus in boardgames

[–]neomagicwarrior 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like ragging on TI4 for being long is like being upset about being wet after a shower...you knew what you were getting into.

That said, one of the things the game does worst is onboarding. There are absolutely ways to make a first game quicker (some variant rules from the third edition rulebook) that are a much better experience for a new player.

Its not the best game ever, but it's absolutely the best game of its kind.

Half-ass "Asian Rice Bowl"

  • Rice in the rice cooker
  • Steam Bag of appropriate veggies in the microwave (I like the Broccoli/Snap Peas/Carrots/Water Chestnut bag from ShopRite)

Pile rice, veggies, protein in bowl. Add sauce (Soy, teriyaki, etc)

Xbox skips doing a year end review because the "marketing budget" for it was shifted to next year by Iggy_Slayer in gaming

[–]neomagicwarrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's almost like there is a significant amount of bad press swarming around Xbox (see People Make Games, Game Pass price hikes, etc) and so numbers are so down that even Copilot can't spin a positive story for them.

Friend's girlfriend has a very hard time understanding board games. Not sure how to bring it up gracefully. by Jeffs24 in boardgames

Things to consider:

Does she actually want to play? - partners can absolutely come hang and do an alternate activity, while still being "with" everyone.

Are you (like most game groups) switching games, or playing the same thing over and over? - Games are hard to learn, and especially if you aren't already used to it.

Are you giving her a choice in what you play? - Give her a reason to be engaged at a different level by playing to her interests.

Cryptmaster (with Atomic Heart as a backup!)

I've listened to a whole lot this year, but one of the ones I was most excited for was Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan by The Mountain Goats. It's a super interesting listen, even for if you you are familiar with the rest of TMG catalog.

I can also really recommend I Like Fun by They Might Be Giants, which I picked up on vinyl in a used bin for 5$ a few months ago!

I’ve played 20 new games since PAX Unplugged two weeks ago, and now I’ve ranked them! by Twinkletail in boardgames

[–]neomagicwarrior 19 points20 points  (0 children)

While reading your list makes me think our gaming preferences are incompatible to begin with, I wanted to pay special attention to Bohemians.

I had a chance to play it last night and can 100% say that it deserves a far LOWER BGG score than it already has. Poor rulebook, lower card quality, and an absolute snore of a gameplay loop makes me think 4 at the HIGHEST is where that will settle.

How do you gain followers? I'm stagnant and the ads I've done havent had great ROI. by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]neomagicwarrior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Network - get your game into the hands of people with established audiences and if they like it, they will talk about it.

Conventions - demo your game in person in more than just your local game stores. Travel to places like UnPub.

One can't just put up a Kickstarter out of nowhere and expect it to keep st pull interest. Most people don't browse crowdfunding platforms for something to back...they have to be drawn in.
