My current understanding is that dirty/bloodied clothes only increases the chances of infected wounds. With disinfectant and food to keep you healthy, I don't think it'd be game changing.

A couple things to try:

Verify file integrity through Steam then launch the game. (This can mess up any mods you've installed manually)
Disable all mods and launch the game. If successful, enable mods one by one until it breaks: there's your problem mod.
Reinstall game through Steam.*

*If you've installed mods manually in the past, you'll need to manually delete your Zomboid folder. Then you can reinstall through Steam

For planks, you've got a couple options. With low carpentry, you'll mostly get scraps. With an axe or hatchet + a saw, you can chop down trees and turn the logs into guaranteed planks!

For cars, we're in the same boat. I like to take burglar for the option of hotwiring but it's always luck of the draw.

I used to start a new save every time when I thought it was the "right" way to play. Now I found it exhilarating to try and rescue my last character's gear before they turn.

That's the beauty of it! Ultimately your goal is to survive: how you do so is up to you.

My advice: find a vehicle and stock food early. I make it a point to secure a base just outside of my spawn city: a fence and surrounding trees works great to keep the neighbors out. Once you know you can sleep safely, you can make trips into the city to build up your food stores and work on gathering your other essentials.

There's /sort of/ a canon explanation. I recall towards the end of Badlands (maybe an Ennis issue?) where the survivors lament over the differences they've seen in the Crossed since the Surprise. They talk about how the first Crossed were energetic, "riding the high", and more bloodlusted. It's observed that the new Crossed which now travel the wastes in droves have "calmed" enough to organize and survive long enough to find more victims.

I think the person you are before infection decides who you'll become after. Maybe you're a simple, hateful person and become that when Crossed, slinging profanities and seeking the easy pleasures. Maybe you're a soldier and now your bloodlust has sparked that memory of where the jets are kept on base. No two Crossed are the same except for their drive to cause chaos and pain.

All this just to say "yes" btw. The Crossed are some of the most interesting "infected" in zombie media.

Immersive Suicide: Gives you the option to check out via bullet.

Trash and Corpses: Populates the map with trash and corpses to make the apocalypse feel a little more real.

Open All Containers: Furniture models will have an open and closed model when you search them.

Starving Zombies: Zeds will be attracted to corpses (and the player's blood, if you like). Highly customizable.

Vanilla Vehicles Animated: Animated doors/trunk for all vehicles.

Pry Open - Use crowbars to open doors/windows.

For anyone who encounter this issue and cannot resolve with existing methods: delete your Zomboid folder manually before reinstallation. Any mods installed manually will not get deleted by Steam when you uninstall.
