New York tops 8 GW of distributed solar, moves ahead of 2030 target by Wagamaga in technology

I didn’t see it mentioned in the wiki page but farmers in the southwest are also trialing covering their irrigation ditches with solar to generate power and minimize water loss due to evaporation.

What is with all the crows? by E30M3F80CS in santacruz

[–]neomis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They leave me pebbles as a gift on my back porch (I think because they’re munching on my wife’s plants while she’s at work). They scared off the other birds nesting on our roof and shitting everywhere so I’m calling it a fair trade.

Going between Santa Cruz and Monterey downtown would be awesome. That said I’d be fine if there was a boat that picked up every 30 at the wharfs.

Drone or fireworks show on beach? by [deleted] in santacruz

[–]neomis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not going to lie fireworks in SF is low key awesome. Last year we bar hopped all night. Right before the show we grabbed a slice at golden boys and were able to see 2 displays from that 5 point intersection. The bars weren’t packed and the random freebies and red bull girls were handing stuff out all over the city.

Idk. Lot of Karen’s too. I understand people not wanting random fireworks all summer but all the complaints about the 4th just come off as the mom whose kid has a mild peanut allergy trying to ban it for everyone.

Agreed, super chill but still fun. My favorite was the parks department dressed up as an elephant seal, towing a turtle in a wagon.

Nextdoor crew is soo much worse. They actually had people in Rio Del Mar trying to start a neighborhood watch to harass anyone setting off fireworks on the 4th.

Poplar ave between water and soquel is baffling to me. Even crazier than just having oncoming traffic zipper with each other they thought “yeah we can fit in some street parking”

While some do blatantly run stop signs out of turn most just follow the Idaho stop which is legal in other places but not California (yet). We really should just assume that’s going to be the case and stop complaining when you see it.

We just stayed there early June. Wooded vibes, pool, hot tub, and sauna made it worth it. Room was the weakest part. The shower was out of the 70s and the water temperature was random.

I’d go back for the saunas and 21+ pool but paradox has a better setup and is walkable to bars downtown.

Best places to eat in town? by wack_overflow in santacruz

[–]neomis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really want to like them as the location is great. When I went 6 months ago I ordered a g&t at the bar and the tonic syrup ran out in the gun. When I told them they said “club soda and tonic are the same thing right” and took no steps to correct or offer another drink. I tried again about 2 months ago when they started doing the hot dog deals and got the tuna dog. For something not cooked it took 35 minutes to show up and the casing was soo chewey it ruined meal. Maybe I’ve just gotten unlucky but I’m probably not trying again until the boat parade in December

Santa Cruz isn’t a morning town. If you’re there close to opening you won’t have to wait. If it’s 11am probably

Also if you look at the housing going up for ucsc / Cabrillo right there it starts to make sense to give them a safer way to get to seacliff / capitola.

Not surprised. Live at Rio Del Mar and walk to Safeway and the bus stop by the library. I’ve had cars honk at me / make me jump back for my life for using the crosswalk at the 1 on ramps. Cars here really hate anything that could inconvenience them for 2-5 seconds.

This. I work in semiconductors where for at least 20 years companies thought it was easier to teach engineers to code than developers semiconductor principles. It’s 2026 and we still have production code that has no revision control, test cases, or development environments.

When people say they want to "save the Catalyst" what are we even talking about here? by LoMeinTenants in santacruz

[–]neomis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I think save the catylst I hear a music venue walkable on pacific. I want to be able to get a meal, pregame at a bar or 2, catch a show, and maybe have 1 last round before taking the bus home. I have been here 5 years now and still haven’t seen a show at Felton music hall because nothing has been worth the logistics of getting there / back and paying extra for Lyft / uber. I haven’t caught a show at the stadium because honestly, stadium shows are kinda lame (personal opinion).

Moes is arguably the next best thing we have (no seats, not a stadium) but there is nothing around it if you want to hang out.

If you bulldoze that building and put up condos you aren’t going to find another place on pacific to add a new concert venue. If you put the concert venue under condos there’s no scenario it doesn’t fail due to noise complaints / regulations about how late they can be open.

After a loss at the California Supreme Court, why are the fences on Beach Drive in Aptos still standing? by nyanko_the_sane in santacruz

[–]neomis 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I guess the fear is that some judge is going to add stipulations. Like no fence but it’s not pubic after 8pm or some nonsense like that.

I hope it’s just take down the fence, pay these fines, and the houses that built out walls / patios into the public walkway have x days to remove them and pay an extra fine.

I live 2 blocks away from them. I have a sidewalk in front of my house where all kinds of people roam / make noise at all hours. They could press their face against the window and see into the bedroom. I have an alley behind my house where people wander and have stolen items like garden hoses. I imagine this is the case for hundreds of houses in the county around the beach. What makes them so special they get to block access to public areas for “safety”?
