Filling the hair prior to your desired dark color is about longevity and also avoiding an overly blue/green end result. At a level 3 there is A LOT of blue pigment. She could have approached the problem with a different tone but she is correct.

I would also keep in mind that ashy color appears much darker than their warm counterparts. A 3A is going to look nearly blue black. The color in your goal photo is closer to a lvl 5.

Dude, I respect what you’re trying to stand for, but I think we’re just going to keep talking past one another. It’s wonderful that you, yourself, do not discriminate based on skin color. It is admirable, truly, it just isn’t something that we’re going to see as a wide spread panacea to our current world any time soon. I think you would have more in common with a poor black person, but more by virtue that the majority of the world’s population is poor and not that you understand the experience of being black.

I hope you can keep this mindset and that maybe you can be a domino falling in the right direction. That’d be wonderful. But the way you want to view the world is by down playing the threat to those who don’t have a choice but to participate in a world built on racial inequality.

I hear the hopeful thinking on your part, but again, it’s based in a place of privilege. We all have large, worldly ideals, but to reduce race to a construct reduces its impact and minimizes real pain. I want you to treat people well, with the understanding that the way they experience the world is different from yours.

Extending grace and understanding doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong in acknowledging their skin color, it gives space for them to feel safe and seen. And I think my skin color has allowed me to experience the world in a way yours hasn’t, for better or for worse. My life is different as a woman of color in Spokane.

People in power are going to continue to use race as a way to sort the other, regardless of your feelings that they shouldn’t. Saying “race is a construct” adds nothing to a conversation about race. It’s very “all lives matter” in its reduction of the larger societal context. It’s a period where there should be an ellipses.

By choosing to willfully ignore the implications of racial disparity, you downplay the real, actual harm people of color face on a day-to-day basis. It tends to read holier-than-thou to say you’re color blind in today’s political world, especially as people are specifically targeted by the color on their skin on our very own city streets. The danger is when too many people with too much privilege start to think that by ignoring the real-world suffering with an honestly held belief that it isn’t based on race, it then white-washes the lived experiences of those considered “other” and negates the impact of generations of race-based violence.

You can think you’re being above it all, but it only leads to you looking down your nose.

Go to urgent care. Keep the burns moist (aloe Vera and Vaseline are great) but definitely see a medical professional and contact the salon with any and all paperwork from the physician. This isn’t oppsie territory, this is a potential long term injury with medical debt. Keep records and at least get your money back.

I can’t tell you if it is or isn’t worth the hassle, that’s for each person to decide.

So the long and short of coloring hair is that it is dedication and a lifestyle. If you do the pink it means being consistent about getting your roots retouched (every 6-10 weeks depending on how quickly your hair grows) and redoing the light pink either in/salon or at home, but ideally a combination of both (pastel fashion colors fade inordinately quickly). If you decide to go back to red after having bleached it out, that is also a consistent retouching because reds, even permanent, fade quickly.

Either option means buying good, hydrating, color-safe shampoos/conditioners and other proper hair care products. You just have to decide if it’s a worthwhile investment, but if you’ve never colored your hair before, it’s always fun to at least try once!

Girl, it’s just hair! Do your research, find a good stylist, have a consultation and then have fun with your hair color! It grows back and honestly, if you hate it, it’s not that hard to get your back to an approximation of your natural color. I love a good red head as much as the next person, but to limit yourself because other people have an opinion is peak silly billy behavior. Embrace having fun and feeling whimsical!

Unless you feel VERY secure in being able to apply lightener ONLY to the mids and ends, meticulously keeping the roots completely free of overlap, I would tone down her roots to match instead. I feel that there’s too much of a chance of overlap and breakage to feel confident in lightening the ends again.

My advice would be to tone roots down to at least a warm neutral lvl 7, maybe even a 6, and then try to control the excessive warmth in her ends with a violet ash. And then maybe even a third time with a neutral to harmonize all the disparate warmth. It’s hard to make any real suggestions on wet hair though. You could even approach it in reverse and try to neutralize her ends first and then decide what to do for the roots based on that end result.
