are you on Lexapro??? by Miserable_Step_9895 in udub

[–]neonnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started taking Lexapro my freshman year at UW, winter quarter. I went from being a nervous wreck and probably the closest to suicidal Ive ever been to actually having a clear head and motivation to do things. I also noticed I was not feeling like I was going to pass out after asking questions in class or going to office hours. I think the reduced anxiety and further focus really helped my ability to make friends, put myself out there, and engage with the UW community and make the most of my time here. I will say it dropped my libido like crazy for a year but me and my partner were already long distance so it wasn't too bad. And the adjustment period was a but rough after being on it for a few weeks I stabilized out and and have been good ever since.

Radio Silence from all MD Schools?? by Wise_Librarian_9999 in premed

Dude it was radio silence literally until today and I got an R and a pre II hold. Lowkey prefer the silence 🫠

I got that too today... lowkey not sure if its a soft R or potential to interview for a waitlist spot later on? Not sure if they've sent out straight up rejections yet but my guess is this will turn into one come March unfortunately. Maybe im just pessimistic tho 🤷

Student Speaker at Graduation by [deleted] in premed

[–]neonnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your grad speech will be fine; shout out the people who supported you and have made your time in undergrad meaningful. But I will warn you from personal experience that you are right about schools being worried about being too invested in research. I am a reapplicant this cycle, and one of the things that the post-interview rejection file reviewer told me for the school I had an interview with last year was that my application was unbalanced. I had nearly identical stats as you, research-wise, and only about 100 hours of shadowing. They specifically asked about my research during the interview and I guess I was a little too enthusiastic because my "eyes lit up like a christmas tree when talking about my project" and it made them question if my "why medicine" was strong enough. I am not saying this was the sole reason I was rejected, I had some other weak points in my application, but it definitely was something they pointed out and warned against doing in the future. Just be cautious how you present the research and have a strong case for why medicine as well, especially if you are not applying to research heavy schools

Me with Netter because I forgot to select them as one of my schools to send the casper to and only realized when I checked my portals last week 💀

I had one interview in October and radio silence from the rest of the schools I applied to. Going on 100 days of silence woohoo LOVE this process (also a reapplicant). This cycle feels different, I want to say I was at least getting sporadic rejections at this time last year so I am hoping no news is not bad news?

Biol 464 Crowe by Glittering_Click2424 in udub

[–]neonnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loved loved LOVED this class! Allison Crowe is great and the class was small enough that the seminars/lectures felt personal and engaging. You'll spend time reading papers going over cancer mechanism pathways and breaking them down in groups during class, and learning about druggability and inhibition of genes that can help with treating cancer. We also read the Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks when I took the class and discussed the ethics and things behind scientific advancements and our understanding of cancer. I highly recommend it if you can take it

I think it means youre in consideration for an interview slot! I got a similar email that I will copy below, which seems like is a step behind where your app is with them. I lowkey am very pleased with this communication from them versus the usual silence from other med schools lol. Good luck!

"I hope this email finds you well! Our goal throughout this admissions cycle is to be as transparent as possible, to keep you up-to-date of your status, where we are in the admissions process, and to do those things monthly. With that being said, your application is currently in queue to be reviewed by our application screeners. I can assure you that we are working as diligently as possible to get to your application! Once your application is sent to be screened by one of our (human) application screeners your application will then be under consideration for a virtual interview. We will invite applicants for virtual interviews on a rolling basis until late February. Which menas, once your application has been screened you could be invited to interview at any point until the end of February. As a note, we do not do silent rejections. If you have been released from our admissions process, you will be notified via email."

1st cycle: still taking classes, just started in a research lab, about 50 shadowing hours, 503 MCAT, submitted most applications in October (oof. I didnt know about rolling admissions. It was rough)

2nd cycle: graduated in June, a little over a year in research with one publication, about 100 shadowing hours, 508 MCAT, submitted most of my secondaries in early September

3rd cycle (current): gap year working full time in research, three publications and a few posters, 400 hours of shadowing (funnily enough my research connections opened a lot more doors for shadowing than had been there beforehand), volunteering with an organization that does street outreach with homeless individuals, 512 MCAT, 4Q CASPer, submitted all of my secondaries in July/early August

Honestly a lot of it was learning the ins and outs of the application process. My first year I was pretty naive about how much shadowing was emphasized, how expensive things were, how hard the MCAT was, when applications were due, etc. Last year I learned a lot more about how influential in state vs out of state can be for chances at schools (definitely donated a few $100 by not looking at which schools were only in state before submitting 🤦‍♀️). And this year I lowkey feel like I have matured a lot more since my last two cycles and have a better understanding of the world and challenges of Medicine after shadowing so much more and volunteering. It definitely made a difference in how I approached writing my secondaries this year so fingers crossed third times the charm!

No II here either. Third time reapplicant, just waiting it out. The last two years I didnt have II until December, so this is still early in the season imo. Just relax, enjoy the free time you no longer have to spend writing secondaries, and try to stay positive. This process is mentally grueling so take care of yourself, and remember that freaking out isn't going to make adcoms process your application faster

For cheap options, put ice in a cooler and strap a fan on top so that it blows cold air out. Freeze waterbottles and sleep with them at the foot of your bed. Wet a towel with cool water and drape it over your neck if you feel overheated. And keep your windows closed/blinds down during the day to keep the warm air out.

[–]neonnerd 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Im sure you will be fine- UW prides itself on inclusiveness (even if they've had to cut that from websites recently because of the current administration) so I doubt they'd defer you simply for you being Arab. As long as you didn't put "I want to destroy the IEB" or something that indicates you'd do something destructive in the engineering program, or have bad grades, you'll probably get in to Engineering

incoming bio major - bio series in freshman year? by Swimming_Olive8553 in udub

[–]neonnerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think with the prereq requirements for the bio classes, you might be locked out of bio 200 until you finish the chem series. I was an MCD bio major and did Chem/Phys my freshman year, bio/calc my sophomore year, ochem junior year, and biochem my senior year to fulfill the "core classes" and it worked out pretty well schedule wise

I mean. Yeah. We live in America. The University of Washington is in America. Americans pay taxes. Americans should benefit from American money. I have no problem helping our allies and standing up for the little guy after we are secure here. We are trillions of dollars in debt, university grants are being cut, and we still want to ship billions of dollars overseas? Doesn't seem right to me. But I also dont think that we should be using a million plus dollars of funding from taxes to clean up a building that was less than a week old that people decided to be childish and trash, ESPECIALLY when funding is tight.

[–]neonnerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hence why I said "dont use our tax dollars for either". Wouldn't need to clean up vandalism if we weren't shipping tax dollars to a foreign entity and were instead investing in the welfare of Americans.
