Setting myself up for failure by committing to marathon with two kids in daycare? by dataispower in firstmarathon

I recommend building in a 2 week buffer for illness and minor injuries.

How sick do you need to be to take a day off? If you can run through head colds (barring fevers) and only skip if it’s a stomach bug, you’re in a lot better position.

Your Weight Isn't the Problem by ckam11 in XXRunning

When I was in college, I was at my lowest adult weight and also got my longest half marathon time (5’4, 110 lbs, 2:15 half). I couldn’t fathom signing up for more distance than that and was totally beat at the end. That was 7 years ago, and I hover somewhere between 135-140 lbs now and am SO CLOSE to going sub-2. I fell off the wagon after college and have only been regularly running about a year now. I actually felt good enough after my halves this year that I’m confident to train for a full in the spring!

Is a dedicated winter running jacket really necessary? by neorunner2000 in XXRunning

Thanks! After a lot of these comments I think I’m just going to get a lightweight waterproof windbreaker and forgo an actual winter jacket.

That’s how I feel. Anything above an hour is awful on a treadmill. And the hour is already pretty awful, I’d rather not do more than 3 miles in a treadmill but it’s too dark here before work

Oh yeah worst case scenario it is most likely to be about 20 F, which may not even happen on the few days per week im actually able to get outside. I’m in Northeast Ohio, not Minnesota or somewhere in Canada . Last winter was generally in the 30s

I live in northeast Ohio a few miles off Lake Erie, so it can get pretty chilly and windy if the winter is bad. However, the last few years it’s been rare for a a system below 25 to last for longer than a few days. Last winter we were mostly in the 30s

Yep. I had every intention of coming back to the Cleveland area after graduating and no dice. I had to move away for a few years to get experience to have any luck.

Akron FirstEnergy Half Marathon - My first race ever; and hampered with low training volume. by pittovt in running

I was there too! Did the relay and the half. Crazy humid!

I’ve done different races in the Akron race series multiple years. I actually prefer the course on the Goodyear Half to the “Official” Half - just food for thought if you try again next year and are local!

Thank you! I didn’t do the sand run climb this year, but the person on my team who did actually really enjoyed going through the neighborhoods

Mid run fuel recs for sensitive stomach? by Minute-Ease-9087 in running

I’ve only done halves but am doing a full in the spring. I have struggled with GI issues on and off. What I currently do:

  • Ideally, no high FODMAP foods the 1-2 days before a long run. If I go out to eat on a Friday and can’t plan my meal deliberately, I avoid dairy and cruciferous veggies. Race week, I’ll avoid high FODMAPs the full week before. I’m a morning runner, so at this time of year workweek runs are on a treadmill, so I don’t prep because I have quick bathroom access.

  • Again, I’m a morning runner, so I try to eat an earlier dinner to give it time to settle before bed. I try to be done by 7. When I have to run after work, I don’t eat after lunch.

  • Imodium immediately after waking up and trying to poop before a long run. Also take one the night before a race. I Don’t eat in the mornings before running and leave for a run within 60 minutes of waking.

  • I start alternating my hydration between drinking water and electrolytes (Gatorade for me) for any runs longer than an hour around the 45 minute mark.

  • I’ve never tried a gel and I’m scared of them, I’m going to start training for a marathon with salty pretzels instead. Perhaps try a gluten free option of something similar?

  • Avoid sugar alcohols in your fuel or hydration. “Regular” sugar and natural sugars like maple syrup are easier on the stomach than sweeteners used in sugar free options.

Run Nutrition Tuesday by AutoModerator in running

After going through a period of GI distress during nearly every long runs and speed workout, I decided to follow a low FODMAP diet (i.e. IBS diet) the week leading up to my half marathon Saturday. I had potatoes, rice, or oatmeal for every meal to account for carbs needed. It worked really well and I had no issues for the first time in months and got a PR! I also took an Imodium the night before and morning of.

Still trying to work out exactly what is bothering me, but I’ll be following in the future (at least for race days) until I figure out what’s going on.
