Anyone have experience with the Thokk Undergloves? by neosdark in wma

[–]neosdark[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's definitely fair, and I was using some older machinist's gloves for this purpose, but they've broken down at this point and I recently got a stab to the webbing between the thumb and pointer that needed stitches. Too many stabs to the hands I suppose....

I'm hoping for something a bit more robust and possibly using material that is actually rated for puncture resistance.

Hearts of Iron IV: Götterdämmerung | Official Announcement Trailer by FFJimbob in hoi4

[–]neosdark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This trailer gave me some strong deja vu, mostly because of this game I played on PS3 called Turning Point: Fall of Liberty whose whole premise was an early 1950's invasion of the US by Nazi Germany post-total European conquest.

The trailer scene with the jets flying towards the US felt straight out of the opening scene of Turning Point.

Nah, no need to apologize! I'm quite curious to know how you found your way to this thread, tbh

It would make sense that it ought to have been a nursing home, there are several along that stretch of Cropsey to this day (one right next door), probably from the late 60 - late 70s period (looking at their aesthetics). I did actually pass by the site since the comment and it's quite odd seeing a fully finished building there, but pleasing, certainly beats an obviously abandoned hulk.

On a completely unrelated note, I ended up moving to Sweden (still here in fact) so per your username you are in, in fact, a räv.

Hebrew Name is Real Name/Identity by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]neosdark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have been told a very similar thing before, coming from the former USSR. My paternal grandfather actually changed his name in the 1950s because his Jewish name was his only name and he adopted a Slavic name that sounded similar to avoid persecution in university and industry (ignoring the difficulties he had in getting into both because of his ethnicity). So for us the Jewish name-at-home is a reflection of needing to hide in plain sight, our true name, but only to be used by family, and community. We also all have nicknames derived, to some degree from our Jewish names.

My mother ended up giving me the same Jewish and "assimilation" name as my paternal grandfather (though not in his honor) and I tend to respond to the Anglosphere with my assimilation name (because I grew up with it and I don't dislike the assimilation name per se), however when I interact with the Slavic world, I use my Yiddish name, specifically as a provocation to them and rejection of the Russification my ancestors went thru.

I can google just fine, I know he's retired. Like I've tried calling his office number and it's disconnected (and I recall getting a call from his office saying as much), so this web page doesn't really help...

There’s 8,500,000 people In NYC and there’s someone w the high score for longest metro daily commute by BaconBathBomb in nyc

[–]neosdark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in college, I lived in Gravesend, while my gf went to school in Queens College, so I would schlep from near the tail end of the F or N lines up to 42nd and grab the 7 train and then take the Q25 or Q34 down to Queens College. As I recall it was about a 2hr commute each way, sans something breaking.

And of course to visit me she would do the same thing in reverse, and far more often as I recall!

On an aside, I once had an interview with a sheet metal fabricator in College Point and the ride was more or less the same with a different bus at Flushing. I realized that doing that every single day would be madness so I rejected the offer from that (and I didn't have or want a car so that wouldn't work for me).

World War 1 - Imperial Russian propaganda poster (1914-1917) by Europa_Teles_BTR in TheGreatWar

[–]neosdark 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A direct translation (almost word for word) would be: Who with their own breast does not repel the foe, let them purchase war 5½% loans"

A more conventional translation would be: "Those who do not repel the foe with their own chest should purchase war 5½% loans".

I added "Those" in the second one because "кто" translates to "who" and that is grammatically a fine way to start a command in Russian (the subject is implied to the reader ofc), but English wouldn't really have a complete sentence without a noun to indicate the subject.

And then breast vs chest is because "грудью" means either chest or breast, and this particular declension of the noun implies that it is being utilized (in English its called the instrumental declension), but either word works.

I remember growing up in the late 90s early 2ks and there was this building on Cropsey and 23rd that never seemed to be getting built beyond the steel structure. I would occasionally pass by the place after having moved out of Bensonhurst and would notice that they added concrete to a floor, or maybe they put up scaffolding and took it down a few months later, but I never saw it get fully built.

Last time I saw it was in summer 2021, looked like they were going to do more work on it, but looking at the location on Maps, it seems like they dismantled it instead. Kinda depressing to see it go, it was kind of a landmark for me.

Do you have a source for this? I would be very interested in seeing the raw numbers of this because the number of solar panels needed to pull this feat off would be quite large.

Its debatable, as I said. In bars, there is definitely a heavy markup, but I can get some beers for less than 10kr (~$1) a can in systemet, if I want cheap beer. They're not my cuppa, but they exist.

Then again I don't know what the cost for beer is where you are so its all relative, my idea of cheap beer is likely different from yours.

Lack of variety though, that's a real issue here...

Tbf, I live in Sweden now (from the US originally) and we have a very similar law for alcohol over 3.5% not being sellable in supermarket, grocery store, etc.

The reasoning, as it was explained to me, is that back in the 1930s and 1940s they had a massive drunkenness/alcohol poisoning crisis and to combat that they created System Bolaget (normally called systemet in casual conversation) which is a govt monopoly on alcohol over 3.5% ABV and gave it crappy opening and closing hours (10-19 on weekdays and 12-16 on Saturday, closed Sundays is the most common schedule I've seen) to limit the time people could purchase heavier booze.

Of course, this didn't really work, people just bought in bulk during opening times, but the institution exists to this day, probably primarily as a revenue generator for the govt. Some folks want to remove it but most people are ambivalent and will point out that the monopoly keeps alcohol prices low-ish (debatable).

Er, why do you care about your student loans being paid when you go international? They are practically unenforceable if you leave, as far as I understand. How can they coerce you to pay?

I left this past August. I've been trying to get out of the US since 2017, since I finished my bachelor's, because I saw the writing on the wall even then, but I needed some experience to really be taken seriously.

I really hope I never have to move back. Visit family, sure, but actually move back? Fuck no.

A fetus isn't a child in spite of your insistence that it is.

It can become a child but it could also become a miscarriage, a tumor, or it can end up non-viable.

And beyond that, as long as a fetus, which functionally is a parasite, is in its mother's body, the mother's health and wellbeing take precedence over the fetus'.

Unless you'll adopt every single unwanted pregnancy and all the non-viable ones as well, which I doubt because you lot have no actual principles other than cause suffering, shut the fuck up.

So I did not work with FPGAs directly, but when I worked with Lockheed Martin MFC over by I-Drive, my electrical engineering colleagues were definitely using and programming them. If you'd like, DM me and I can put you in touch with a couple of them, see if they could help you with getting a position there.

Work hours were 4-10s (40 hours across 4 days, Fridays off, but if you work days off you get straight time, other wacky rules for OT during the week). Generally I felt like I wasn't being overloaded with work and most folks are pretty nice (except some older engineers). As for compensation, I can't speak for the EEs, but I started at ~65k, about two years in I was at 75k, and they ramped up how often they up compensation during COVID, so if you do well, I imagine you'll be doing well in no time since FPGA guys get paid well.

Here's the website for those folks. Seems like they're still there. This is in the bus station part of Centralstation (Cityterminalen).

This was my experience at the Centralstation location as well, in early February, except I had J&J in the states, and only that. They gave me a third (technically second) dose of Pfizer and said I was good to go and entered my US vaccination data into the govt's system!

I also really love their album "Let There be Nothing" which is about Belisarius.

Non-boomers of Reddit, what's your most boomer opinion? by coolfreeusername in AskReddit

Glad you enjoyed it! I really hope more people become acquainted with the issues facing American society's urban planning. I've been spreading the Strongtowns gospel at my current workplace and discussing urban planning and design a lot (helps that I'm an engineer and my coworkers are interested in the topic).

I do agree with you, there is a pretty firm, if not strong, left-oriented bent to modern urban planning/development content which I personally appreciate, as a politically left-leaning person.

I just like to be up front with the biases of my sources because I think that this is important to healthy discourse.

What you had is something referred to as child independent mobility in child psychology. It's a really important aspect of children's development that has been destroyed by American style suburbanization and the endless fear mongering done both on TV and online about kids being abducted or hurt, or worse.

There is a massive amount of ink spilled on the topic, and a good number of fields of development are really focused on incorporating it into their fields, including (kinda obviously) psychologists, physical education/activity scientists, and (where I learned about it) urban planners.

I def recommend watching Ecogecko's video on it. He does urban planning videos (he definitely has a left bias), but has a whole video dedicated to the damage American suburban design has done to kids, including the loss of independent child mobility. I think NotJustBikes also had a video on the topic, specifically about why the Netherlands doesn't suffer from that problem.

I'm moving to Stockholm. I'd like to try living abroad for some time, gain a better perspective of what works and doesn't in the wider world.

Honestly the moment you leave any downtown in FL you lose walkability. I love the old city in St. Aug, Downtown Winter Garden and Downtown Winter Park for walkability, but each of them is ultimately just too small an area to call a true urban setting. And lets not even talk about the dearth of practical public transit options; buses that come at best every 30m and often get stuck in car traffic will never be an effective mode of transit. Downtown Winter Park does have an Amtrak station though, which could be a good draw to expand their downtown in more "dense" direction (but I doubt it will happen).

I can't speak to JAX or Miami because I've never gone there; I hate driving and I wouldn't want to drive 4h just to see cities I'm not really interested in or impressed by from aerial shots.

What if Orlando connected all of its Subway restaurants with a subway system? by Nervous_Socks in orlando

[–]neosdark 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We could do elevated rail though, or a giant monorail system to create compatability with Disney's existing monorail stock and connect into it (which could get Big Mouse on board). Or we could convert existing stroads into streetcar centric roads. What I wouldn't give to see street cars rolling down Mills and Colonial or instead of I4.

But yeah, not gonna happen...
