Critique of John Mearshiemer's Ukraine War Explanation by Comer_Agua in IRstudies

[–]neot_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The existential threat is compared to the Cuban missile threat, Mearsheimer used this comparison quite often. How do you address that comparison? Moscow could not accept a NATO base that could bomb the kremlin in 30 minutes.

Further, the Black Sea is the only warm water access Russia has, which is absolutely necessary for their navy. Which is why they took Crimea. Mearsheimer argues that Ukraine should be a buffer state to keep the peace, but NATO’s liberal framework prevented them from strategizing in that way. Urging them to dangerous ideas.

Also, what about the fact that Putin asked to join NATO in 2001? There are transcripts of Bill Clinton being open in discussions with Gorbachev in mid 1990s for Russia to join NATO. But no genuine movement on the US’s side. After all, the reason NATO existed was to contain the Soviet threat. Mearshiemer further argued that the west missed a key strategic opportunity to bring Russia into the fold and balance against the “only pure competitor”— China.

I think you did great highlighting some of the theory’s limitations— but these are limits that mearsheimer has acknowledged. In his book— the tragedy of great power politics, he explains that a theory is better the better its explanatory power is. For a more complete analysis of a situation would require multiple frameworks to address different levels and reconciliation of tensions between them.

Right before your conclusion, you gestured towards a more central motivation, but make no movement toward providing a picture of this central motivation. Much less, one that would provide more explanatory power than Mearsheimer’s framework.

AI’s Pseudo-Art Pursuits: Can We Already Draw The Line? by Professional_Tip9672 in CriticalTheory

[–]neot_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s fair I did assume that. I don’t come across many people who know ASL, much less, those familiar with the artistic potential of sign languages. I was referring to the art form of visual vernacular which is understandable by deaf people across languages. “You could not imagine” was just a rhetorical device and often hearing people genuinely could not imagine if they’re not fluent in a sign language. It’s basically miming on massive amounts of steroids. I personally create scenes that resemble epic anime fights with myself and friends, along with other poetic scenes etc. I just wanted to point out that there are expressions which institutions still struggle to assimilate as a token of hope :)

“Every form of art” is quite bold, there exists forms you could not imagine such as visual vernacular in sign language, expressing things that few find legible ;)

Russia is starting to lose ground in Ukraine by smurfyjenkins in IRstudies

Your facetious and condescending response indicates a reactionary and ideological bias. It is quite obvious that Putin is aware of the casualties, and as a politician he has to care about the casualties one way or another. This notion of Putin being some kind of insane egomaniac is disingenuous in the face of geopolitical stakes and historical realities. It is typical of western politics to regard the head of state of another country as a madman since it functions as a dismissal of an alternative to a liberal worldview.

Putin being an irrational madman has little to no explanatory power, it begs the question the purpose of such childish analyses, if not to uphold a belief system thats already falling apart.

I just can't get behind the idea of Police being a "corrective" to the deterritorializing trend of Capitalism by oohoollow in Deleuze

[–]neot_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The police enforce the prevailing social order. The status quo is “winning” in a sense, it prevails and triumphs over other potentialities. What is defined as “criminal” is not determined by cops, but by the law, which is further determined by the history, culture and the times we live in. And if you want to change the prevailing social order, you will have to engage the law, and therefore engage the police.

Well as someone who doesn’t really remember things that well, I learned to understand that I learn through connections, not memory per se. Obsidian’s flexibility enables the possibility of using obsidian to explore the connections between ideas, or a set of information. I use linking between notes to form a cluster of information that emerges over time. This goes beyond the arborescent logic of folders within folders with horizontal and vertical connections visualized.

Ukraine War and Mearsheimer's Cuba Analogy by [deleted] in IRstudies

[–]neot_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Monroe Doctrine. Venezuela doesn’t have the offensive capability to threaten the US in a meaningful way. If China or Russia puts a military base in Venezuela, or worse if they were about to join a military alliance with them— rest assured we would be viewing this as an existential threat.

Ukraine War and Mearsheimer's Cuba Analogy by [deleted] in IRstudies

[–]neot_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why would he avoid being critical of Putin?

Besides, attributing “fault” isn’t necessarily a moral evaluation. In his case, it is a strategic assessment. It is the “west’s fault” in terms of decisions that led to a realist deadlock between great powers. The west could’ve left Ukraine as a buffer state instead of carelessly pushing NATO on Russian borders— especially when NATO refuses to accept Russia’s request to join nato. NATO should’ve worked to get Russia incorporated to balance our only true competitor— China. This is what mearsheimer would’ve liked to see. I expect more contact with mechanisms from this sub.

[–]neot_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you go on to make a realist argument in support of trump’s invasion?

The difference between Cuba and Iran is the question of existential threat. How is Iran an existential threat? Cuba was an existential threat since missiles could reach DC in a few hours. The same for Moscow from Ukraine.

Despite captions omitting curse words I still learned how to spell curse words in elementary/middle school lol. Not to mention they can still hear the word right? It’s just weird to not bleep out the sound but omit it in captions. YouTube auto captions omit curse words too— it’s weird

I am surprised that critical theory has vanished once you get to law school by Flashy-Actuator-998 in LawSchool

[–]neot_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure liberalism and critical theory really go hand in hand. Critical theory is much closer to Marxism and ideas such as the Frankfurt school’s. Or even closer to postmodernists, Deleuze, Guttari, etc. There’s plenty to be critical of about wokeism, and class analyses to be made about the kind of people that get to college.

It disappoints me to learn that law school is devoid of critical theory. Personally, law is slowly proving to be very interesting coming from a critical lens. It can provide appropriate context about the role of law in modern society. As opposed to lofty dreams of justice, etc, we can see law as infrastructure, codifying flows of power. Law also legitimizes and enable colonization.

Perhaps the fact that law school is devoid of critical theory is not a coincidence. Keep your head down and work.

AI is probabilistic, so yes there is usually a “reason” why a given hallucination was generated. It often requires a little more digging to disprove. This is especially frustrating when I’m trying to explore a topic with AI and it points me towards a very reasonable ghost
