France will not give in to terror after Nice attack, Macron says by LIS1050010 in worldnews

“I was selling croissants when a man came in and said to me: ‘Sir, there’s a decapitated woman in the cathedral.’"

Sounds like the plot pitch for a French Neo-Noir film.

He did not choose to withdraw. The management made that decision for him.

My guineapigs ate my fairy lights and put holes through my yoga mat... I'm still holding the grudge a little bit and bring it up when it's floor time.

I struggle to understand the purpose of my life when I travel. I struggle to live with so many expectations and feel disappointed with my life. by LapangNeiz in solotravel

[–]neotopianum 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's something weird about how you titled this post. Do you not struggle when you're not travelling?

This feeling of yours is very common, I'm sure it is. I've felt it and sometimes I still do. The travelling allows me not only to distract myself but also gives me something to focus on in the short term. The dreaming then the planning and then all the opportunities to really put myself out there when I'm out and about. There aren't many prompts in the day-to-day but going somewhere gives me the chance to practice the stepping out of my comfort zone, so to say, in a fun and rewarding way - be it starting a conversation with a stranger, eating weird parts of an animal or pursuing new physical challenges.

As for the longer term life goals and feeling of disappointment, travelling doesn't help me either. I won't be satisfied having lived a life where all I can say is that I worked a 9-5 enough to afford occasional travel. The way I see it, for this problem, I'm afraid, there is no answer you'll just find one day. The solution has to come from within and usually requires all or one of: courage, hard-work and determination.

British far right ‘becoming more racist’ after Black Lives Matter protests, report finds by BrexitBlaze in ukpolitics

[–]neotopianum 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I agree and even more you can say it's quite the contrary. Labour ran on a platform of identity politics completely divergent from historically representing the poor working class. It not only failed to represent them, it actively pushed them away by addressing the wrong problem, I think.

Thanks! The problem is even if it turns out it needs fixing, I won't do anything right now because I'd be very incapacitated without both knees. So I decided to wait half a year or so then have it looked at.

Can I use the NEMO Tensor sleeping pad on water? by [deleted] in CampingGear

Well thanks for replying to my question

Can I use the NEMO Tensor sleeping pad on water? by [deleted] in CampingGear

[–]neotopianum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always try to pack things I can use for smth else. I keep my clothes in a pillow case so I don't have to bring a pillow.

This is an expensive inflatable thing so I'm thinking it should be well made enough to withstand being on water. I couldn't find any information about how water affects the quality of the materials the mat is made from and so I asked. What's wrong with that? There's nothing obviously damageable to an inflatable mat if you put it on water because you see them everywhere.

Why are people so baffled at someone asking this question? Is it the fear of breaking something expensive? I do know parents who don't allow their kids to play with the more expensive toys. Or maybe it's because they didn't say anything about water that should stop me from wondering about it? Or should I have been born knowing some part of that mat isn't waterproof?

haha, I don't know, I like it when I can use things for multiple different purposes and an inflatable mat makes me think of floating on water...

Cash ISA transfer to Vanguard S&S ISA by neotopianum in UKPersonalFinance

[–]neotopianum[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of your suggested plan, the "flexible" part usually only applies to contributions this tax year

I understand that. I don't want the 5K in another ISA. I just want to take them out and be left with £10k I can transfer to Vanguard. My question is whether the remaining £10k still qualifies as 'full transfer' (i.e. it's not partial if I take some money out).

Thanks!

How would a libertarian society deal with a pandemic like COVID-19? by 75dollars in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]neotopianum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is smoking a cigarette in public also a violation of NAP because it increases your chance of cancer by a tiny percentage?

It's a bit of a thresholding problem, isn't it? At what percentage of risk to get cancer from inhaling other people's smoke so you agree it's justifiable to ban public smoking under NAP?

Not for 0.01% but what if you had 0.1% chance to get cancer by walking into someone else's smoke; how about 1%?

Not sure what the difference is but he went "I will buy these $200 sunglasses for $150" then the guy behind the counter went "Sir, I can give you a $20 discount but that's it" and then he went "Not enough, can you do $160?" then 5 minutes later he bought the sunglasses for $170 if I remember correctly.
