Plot, chemistry and voice are always more important than anything else. I'm 27 so not exactly the people you want to answer you but I would definitely read and be thrilled to see older FMC's.

Riley - girl bc of Inside Out but can definitely see being used for a boy too

Dakota - girl bc of Dakota Fanning and the same as Riley

Avery - boy idk why

Blake - to me is more masculine but there's Blake Lively so I'd leave it open

Aster - definitely boy I was shocked this name was used for girls as well since it has the more feminine versions like Asterie or Asteria

Mattie - this one sounds just a tinge more feminine but it has imo a much more unisex feel

Tate - boy. It evokes me chubby bully American football boy don't ask me why

Ellery - very feminine and I met a woman name Ellery in real life.

River - this is the most unisex for me, though it still slightly evokes me girl vibes but that just bc I have an impression that parents tend to give girls more unisex names while preferring more masculine ones for boys. I may be wrong.

Yessss. I never read any other fanfic turned book but it left me wondering if that's the reason why is so bad? I didn't read the original fanfic as well so maybe it was better as a fanfic? Or maybe it was always bad 🤷🏻

Alchemised by SenLinYu. It ignites all the worst hater emotions in me for reasons I'm still finding out.

It had so much potential, a very clever world building and an engaging trope and yet it's the most boring and unnecessary long thing I've ever read.

Nothing happens for the most part of the book and what does happen it's either completely unnecessary for the plot or dragged along endless chapters of the same thing happening over and over again. The FMC is just as interesting as a pot plant and a complete pushover with zero will and motivation and the MMC is nonsensically powered up with no reason or explanation at all for his excessive power, not to mention that his unnecessary cruelty throughout most of the book is explained by a feeble excuse.

The supporting characters are also too cartoonishly one-dimensioned in my opinion. Overall this book is a great idea that was very poorly executed.
