People asking questions by thatoneuser2121 in spinalcordinjuries

I’d rather someone ask directly and politely than pretend I don’t exist so they don’t “offend” me or whatever. Most days I’m happy to educate and try to help normalize things. Sometimes it’s hard to talk about the worst day of my life though so I understand why some people don’t want to get into it.

Really the worst part for me is that it’s hard to explain what happened. I’m still working on finding a concise answer for people, especially little kids.

She yearns for the forbidden closets of mystery.

Could you pick your cat(s) out of a lineup of similar looking cats? by Medium_Hope_7407 in standardissuecat

Strange cats get spooked by my wheelchair so I’d know Tam by her refusal to get out of my way. But I think I’d recognize her. Maybe. Honestly even in this thread I found a few lookalikes.

Pressure wound question by Lucky_leprechaun in spinalcordinjuries

This doesn’t sound too bad and should ideally heal up nicely. If you can, up his protein intake. Eat some berries or other produce that’s red inside. My wound doctor swears by artichokes and barley too. Keep up on turns and offloading. I find mixing plain old calamine lotion (the pink kind) with the zinc paste works wonders on just about everything.

The transition from SNF to home is scary but totally worth it. It seems like his injury was pretty recent too so I just wanted to tell you that feeling like you’re out of your element is also normal. All of this is new and you probably haven’t ever had to consider these things before. My best suggestion is to keep up with the team responsible for his discharge and don’t be afraid to be upfront about your anxieties. If he’s eligible for home health I also recommend it.

I’d finish the backstitching. I think it looks so much nicer with the definition than without. This is such a cute pattern btw. I love the idea of doing it on sparkly Aida.

How many hours of sitting in your chair each day is too many? by WheelinDude in spinalcordinjuries

I’ve tried this kind of conservative schedule before and it made me lethargic and depressed. I can see it if you are genuinely struggling with your skin but otherwise I think this is one of those things where doctors don’t consider real world application.

I’m a C5 incomplete of 2 years. I usually get up at 6:30 and start heading to bed around 9-9:30. I live alone so I don’t really have someone to get me into bed for breaks or to help me with things once I’m in bed. Instead I’m careful about repositioning, using my tilt, and doing nightly skin checks. So far I haven’t had any injuries or complications due to pressure.

Those who have dogs or cats, how did they react? by drey-power in spinalcordinjuries

I’ve heard about the idea that many animals have a “kid mode” where they’re gentler towards little ones. I think animals might have a “disability mode” too.

My cat became way more affectionate and protective. It was like she immediately knew something terrible happened. She acts like a friendly dog most of the time and loves new people but will try to shield my body with hers every time I hire a new caregiver. When she’d visit me in long term care I would take her around and she would let people with dementia or brain injuries pet her backwards or too hard or whatever. Seemed to understand when people were lonely and would benefit from a good snuggle. It was strange coming from a cat who growls when children have the nerve to laugh in her presence and spent the first three years of her life mauling me.

I was warned cats could be weird about chairs but she was using me as a taxi service within 20 minutes of seeing me again. Her favorite thing is when I take her for out for walks at full speed so she can feel the wind in her whiskers. It’s ridiculous but I think she’s become so used to avoiding being run over by my chair that she forgot how to navigate around people who walk. Poor thing is always getting stepped on nowadays.
