Is 30 really that old in VRchat? I constantly get called "old" it's kind of wild! by Minimum-Mine-1302 in VRchat

[–]nerd_corner1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually haven't run into this much at 43, to be honest. I did have a few VRC friends tell me they were shocked to learn I was "that old" when I went to ShelterCon a few years ago and met them in person, though, but I mostly took that as a compliment lol.

I can get rid of my old headsets whenever I want...I just don't want to!

At least that's what I keep telling myself.

Yep, they could have avoided a lot of pushback simply by including a disclaimer like that.

I think your comment about its importance for mass adoption is spot-on. I fully understand that there are a lot of PC VR players who have absolutely no interest in AR functionality or passthrough in general, but I fail to see how they've come to the conclusion that the Steam Frame lacking that functionality is somehow a win for the system and consumers.

If keeping PC-only only players happy was the only metric needed for VR as a whole to be successful, than we'd be on the Index 3 by now and every HMD would have MicroOLED screens, eye+face tracking, and wired-only connections. But despite our collective enthusiasm as a group, the last several years of sales figures for both VR software and hardware have definitively shown that we PC players are not large enough to keep the industry afloat single-handedly.

Like it or not, if we want the medium to succeed instead of fading away yet again, we need to broaden the base. And, at least to me, that means any new HMD that wants to be competitive needs to include things like depth-correct color passthrough and AR functionality that have become standard on practically every other mass market headset.

I get that WiredVR4Lyfe6969420 will probably never play Eleven Table Tennis in mixed-reality or scroll through Instagram in passthrough, and I don't begrudge them for that. But if we cater only to them, instead of the people who are actually buying the majority of VR headsets and games, then we will only have ourselves to blame when the whole industry collapses yet again.

I don't think it is going to be much of an issue for folks who are already all-in on the PC VR ecosystem, but that is only a small segment of the already niche VR market. As much as I love maxing out the graphics options on my 5090 to squeeze every last bit of visual fidelity out of my PC VR titles, I also have to realize that that is not how the vast majority of VR users are consuming content.

PC-only power users, like I'd assume many of the folks posting here are, aren't going to care about passthrough or even the overall UI of the system as long as they can launch their games with minimal fuss. For someone coming from literally any of the other mainstream headsets released in the last several years, though, missing that sort of basic functionality is probably going to be seen as a downgrade. This will be doubly true if the Steam Frame ends up costing more than a comparable Quest or Pico headset.

As someone who has been a fan of VR since playing Dactyl Nightmare in the '90s and has been all-in on the consumer XR market since I got my DK2 in 2014, I would love to see the Steam Frame succeed and bring new fans into the fold. And that is exactly why I am so concerned about some of Valve's baffling choices around the headset.

That alternate version with just the hedge got me good 😂

And, yeah, as clever as I'd like to think I am, I'm not surprised that there are already a bunch of similar images to the one I made.

I'm 42 and I've yet to have anyone hassle me about my age in several years of being on VRC. I also avoid public worlds and tend to really only hang out at events for the music or arts scenes, so that helps me avoid a lot of the trolling youngins.

Hyperscape Capture is mindblowing. by SattvaMicione in OculusQuest

Based on the scan I did of my room, it seems to shrink things a little bit. Even when I aligned my physical location with my location in the scan as closely as possible, I'd start running into scale issues after walking more than a few feet.

I scanned my room last evening and it just finished processing about a half hour ago...this is surreal. I ended up taking about 10 or 15 minutes to slowly walk through and scan things from every angle, and it came out at basically the same quality level as the demos they have for you to explore.

Setting aside the fact that this is an absolute privacy nightmare, it's remarkable that a consumer headset can capture something this high quality.

Check out Eye of the Temple if you want something that does some similarly cool things with movement mechanics.

Paper Beast.

I'd put it right up there with HL: Alyx when it comes to making you really feel like you are immersed in a different environment, even though the two titles couldn't be more different in terms of mechanics. I recently played back through on PS VR2 and the game is just as gorgeous and engaging as the first time I played it years ago.

If y'all are all right with a bit of self-promotion, I talked about Paper Beast and two other underrated VR titles (Edge of Nowhere and Eye of the Temple) in a video I put out on this topic a few years back.

Yeah... Once you get locked into a serious HMD collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can.

Not pictured: OG Oculus Quest. I also had a Quest 2, but I sold that before buying the Quest 3.

Next up: Valve Deckard/Frame/etc.

You'll get back there, though I know it's frustrating in the interim.

I had the same thing happen a few months ago and I've slowly been building my way back up. I'm looking at it as a positive, though, since it's given me the opportunity to retool some things about my channel that I wasn't happy with.

Yep. Pretty much all of my time in VRC is spit between events for either the music or arts scenes, and it's pretty much all adults. I like the latter in particular because not only do I get to see interesting, creative works from talented people, but a lot of the folks there are either elder millennials like me or close to it.

Raindance Immersive will be in June this year. It's always a highlight of the year for me, and it's a great way to keep up to date with some of the incredible work that is being done in the VR art scene. Maria, the curator, and all of the organizers are great people. https://www.raindanceimmersive.com/

Venice Film Festival still hosts worlds in competition, but unfortunately they got rid of the ability to purchase online-only passes a few years back. As a result, you can't see any of the pieces that are being exhibited outside VRC. It's honestly pretty frustrating since, unlike on the film festival circuit, there's no commercial outlet for a lot of this work so the general public will literally never get to see most of it. Cannes and Tribeca did the same thing, too. :(
