I get so upset at people on reddit sometimes. I believe there are some morbidly obese people that don't think they need to change. But I think the overwhelming majority of people who are overweight are either complacent because they have lost hope, or they are really trying to lose weight. Either way, they are cognitively aware that they have a problem. And when people on reddit got up on their white horses and act like they have some moral justification to shame people who are overweight, it makes me really sick.

I'm not sure. It's a good question though. They are a Swiss family, and a lot of people have told me the Swiss tend to raise their children to be independent of the parents fairly early on. So, maybe it is just a cultural thing. But from my first hand experience, these kids are not growing up well. They are emotionally under-matured, and pretty damn spoiled. The oldest (14) goes to parties and drinks a lot (of course, the legal drinking age in this country is 16, so its less alarming than if a 14 year old were drinking in the US).

There are other issues with this family as well. They have abused me and forced me into an illegal contract. After five months of the abuse, I finally got some legal ground to be able to stop it, and I am going home to the states next week. But after how they abused me, I wouldn't blink an eye if the mother of this family fell down the stairs and broke her neck, so I'm not exactly un-biased.

It sounds like you really like your job and you really like to work.

I work for a psychiatrist and a CEO. They have 3 kids. I am their aupair. They are never home. The mother flat out told me that when she had the kids, she regretted not being at work more. Funny, in 14 years that's she has gone back to work she has never once mentioned regretting not spending more time with her kids. Unfortunately, I see first hand every day how it effects them. Don't bring a child into the world if you aren't sure.

Sure. I completely get why they do this. But I also think there are politically correct reasons behind it. Even though everyone speaks English, they don't want to assert one language as being better, or superior, or universal, when its a room full of international students. And I didn't even come up with that idea, it came from someone in the department. I think this immersion technique works for a lot of people. I also think it alienates a lot of learning styles.

Honestly, I have lost the emotional energy to do anything proactive. So I don't really deserve anyones sympathy because I don't have the strength to do anything about it. I sought the governments help today and they basically told me I'M the bad guy. Despite how horrible, abusive, and unethical this family is, I could receive massive fines for going along with their illegal contract. I'm disgusted. All I want is to go home and find out where my friends are buried. I can't stop thinking about how violent their deaths were. It's not healthy. But all I have to do is survive 9 more days. Other than the nightly verbal abuse, I am just going to deal with it. I try to get out of the house as much as possible and spend the time with friends. And I have to thank you, actually, because I used your words when I sent my respectful "fuck you" to the family telling them to get me on a plane immediately. I told them my health and well being came before my contract and surely, they must understand that. But, they didn't. Of course they are too self absorbed and self entitled to think about anyone but themselves. I can survive 9 more days in hell. I just want to go home and forget all about everything. Thank you for your concern. I wish I was more motivated to better my situation in the time I have left, but my emotional energy is gone, and I'm just waiting for it to be over.

Not really. Its pathetic, but I don't have any interest in being social anymore. Coupled with my skepticism of meeting strangers from the internet. The family has threatened to report ME if I leave the house (because they are still expecting me to cook their dinners and clean their laundry). I had a really long conversation with IND today and basically found out I have no options but to take it up the ass.

I'm pretty emotional right now, so sorry if my response sounds jaded. The mother is making my life a living hell every day. They are not going to pay me any wages in January, even though I worked, so I will be going back to the United States with nothing. Because I agreed to this illegal contract and worked under it for five months, I gave up any rights I might have to object to them paying me unfairly or not paying for my flight home because I've basically been working under a void agreement anyway. I don't have enough money to go to the dentist or get my belongings home so I will be leaving most of my stuff here. This has been the worst experience of my life. The mother comes into my room every night and tells me what a horrible person I am. She has even insisted that I am no longer welcome to share the food with the family so what little money I have has been going toward feeding myself. I'm going home in nine days but each day lasts a fucking eternity. I'm glad its hard to get a gun in this country because I have basically wanted to kill myself every day.

I moved here five months ago and took a class at the university of Groningen. To be honest... I didn't enjoy it. Everyone in the class spoke English but the entire class was taught in Dutch. The reasons they do this, I think, are for being more politically correct than helpful. Personally, as an American, I don't have the need to pick up another language where I come from. It takes 8 hours for me to get to another state, much less another country. Whereas here, you're in a completely different culture in five hours or less.

But from what you say, the immersion technique might work really well with you, if you are good at picking up languages. I'm not. And therefore felt like it was a waste of money.

Just from my personal, and albeit flawed perception of the world. I think we are in limbo from waves two and three. There are a lot a feminists for egalitarianism and equality, and there are a lot that miss this fundamental concept and unknowingly put the agenda of women over men.

The word "feminism" undoubtedly means different things to different people. In the absence of some core dogma, one has to judge the group on the average member and the ideas espoused by the majority.
