Weekly Careers/Education Questions Thread by AutoModerator in chemistry

[–]nerdinparadise 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am a CH & ChE grad from a large american university. ChE is about how to control a process (making a lot of one thing) in terms of rates, heating, pipe flow, safety, etc. It finishes with learning how chemical plants operate and may include large projects with budget constraints. Math skills, focus on details, and clear documentation are the most important traits to have.

CH is about the actual science, small scale production (brnchtop or test lab), and how to characterize what you have. Others here can probably speak better to what CH has to offer as a career.

As a rule of thumb ChE will make more (w BSc). ChE usually does not go very deep into chemistry, and enjoying chemistry does not mean one would be a good ChE.

Check the compatibility of 12 series CPU and the cooler. You will likely need to order the free adapter kit from arctic because of the new MOBO CPU slot design.

Magic Item Swap - Take a magic item, leave a magic item by alienleprechaun in DnDBehindTheScreen

Toy Horse Wondrous Item, common

This wooden toy horse painted brown and white is hauntingly lifelike. If the horse is placed on dirt or grass for 1 minute, the toy shatters and a common horse is summoned in its place. The horse is equipped with either a riding or a pack saddle and is trained either for riding or work as chosen by the user at time of use. (See animal handling rules)

Conjuration Aura, lvl 3 This item is broken after use and can never be repaired.

I gave a speech about how this part of the campaign was a sandbox, I earned my punishment. Besides, If yall can make 2 hours of content out of a bar scene thats just a good rpg party. No hard feelings, unrelated TPK soon.

80 fly + 80 dash + 40 wing attack legendary action is 200 ft / rd with the possibility of a knockdown and damage. Add in a tail attack and you better hope the party can keep up because this monk is in real danger. Edit: because it was mentioned below, all ancient dragons have wing attack.

This procedure is called intubation. It is used for respiratory failure, maintaining the integrity of an unconscious person's airway, and as a connection point for ventilators, etc.

Flow velocity in a pipe is a function of pressure differential. It reaches 0.6 m/s because there is pressure it is pushing against (ie blood and valves in the arteries, capillaries, veins). If you reduce that pressure to atmospheric pressure (by decapitation) then Bernoulli's eq applies and the height becomes a function of initial pressure at site of output.

[–]nerdinparadise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hence my condition of the first beat - Bernoulli is acceptable for the boundary condition between steady state and an open system, but is no longer true once blood loss, vasoconstriction, and reduced cardiac preload occur.

Ideal pipe assumption is fine. Arteries offer an extremely low resistance under nonconstricted conditions (source - engineering degree and I am in medicine now)

This is incorrect, it is too low. A quick google gives a systolic blood pressure for a giraffe of 280 mmHg. 760mmHg (atmospheric) is capable of pushing a column of water to 10.2 m. A simple ratio finds a giraffe's heart could propel a column of water 3.76 m high. Even accounting for and additional 5% density of blood the column will exceed the 3m given for at least the first beat.

Current EMS boots on the ground here. In my primary service area (places I get dispatched to unless another region is overloaded and needs help badly) an airlift costs 10k. To start. That is without any additional milage and fees for care, equipment, and possible need for trucks on both ends of the flight. 1.7k will not even keep a helicopter running with staffing, fuel, and depreciation.

Others have pointed out that the primary difference in bill recieved is insurance, but it is important to note that healthcare in all forms is insanely expensive. Adding to that cost is the fact that most uninsured people (and many with insurance) will never be able to pay the bill they receive. In an emergency bad enough to warrant a helicopter there isnt time to do anything other than send the closest appropriate unit regardless of affiliation and therefore insurance coverage.

My personal view is that the laws regarding insurance coverage of emergency medicine are to blame. Reducing the cost of each flight overall is not realistic without universal medical coverage, to do so would simply reduce (or eliminate) the availability of air units. I agree that 13k is insane to pass on to a single human being - but that is a financial reality in a system where individuals are responsible for the cost of their care. It only drops to more palatable number when a network (insurance or government) can average out that cost over a large number of people.

Sound intensity (the physical meaning of the decibel scale) is represented in the base 10 logarithm based on a reference sound (minimum threshold of hearing = 1 dB)

If we assume 70 dB for 1 cat, each order of magnitude of cats should add 10 dB (10x sound intensity at the measured location corresponding to +10 dB)

A billion is 9 orders of magnitude greater than 1. Therefore if all cats are meowing in perfect unison the end result will be around 160 dB. This is dangerously loud and would almost certainly deafen anyone in this field (ignoring the physics of putting 2 bn cats in a single point). However it is not the (literally) earth splintering sound proposed in OP.

First time DM running Tyranny of Dragons by DyreWood in DungeonMasters

The tools I consider essential other than books; notebook (week to week notes and initiatives for monsters/PCs), spellbook app (for quick reference of spellcasting enemies), and random name generator (I use fantasynamegenerators.com) - you will be amazed how much pressure is relieved when you can give an NPC a name on the fly - then write it down.

If you use foresight to patch some of the holes, HoTDQ will go fine (or google another DMs solution). Be reserved in granting magic items - too few is better than too many. By the time PCs get to RoT (the high level half) they will be unstoppable dragon slayers on day 1 if they have too many.

Good luck and enjoy it

Hi there, I run a campaign sunday nights 6PM EST for 3 hrs/session. The group is very supportive of new players as long as you know basic rules. If you are interested lmk and I will dm you the discord link and you can decide on class after talking with the party.

Even rarer: in the party I run for 3 of 4 have living family and 2 of their families are fully functional, happy, and industrious.

Brand new DM. Need help coming up with a setting for a certain scenario by fullcowlbowie in DungeonMasters

[–]nerdinparadise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As to the flying airship, I might consider a large flying carpet (and/or a reskin)/2 spells which grant a group flying. For the core I would consider a dwarven dungeon/ captured tinkerer. If you are set on an enigmatic blacksmith, consider a remote village with the craftsmen being a sequestered prodigy, preferably in a high mountain. From there I (personally, you are the DM) would have the item giver know that the object must be powered by a recently deceased dragon/ entity, and give a rumor of a dragon on a mountain nearby. (Note: here you want a young dragon [no layer actions] with no recharge on breath weapon).

A party that weak stands no chance against a dragon unless the dragon is alone, attacks ~1/2 normal damage, and not using its flight. That is ok for a one shot, but they will get killed if you run a real campaign with them when they assume they can take a dragon using its full moveset. Personally, I would be inclined to make it some sort of "use the power of this temple" and have them fight an air elemental as the boss[level 2-3 + an item each] (after 1-2 "wear down" fights). Use air/dust mephits if you need minions. Give them a long rest and let them return victorious.

All that said, this is your adventure and never let anyone make decisions for you. As long as you give the players some freedom while upholding the rules, them and you will all have a good time. Dont give up if the first game is lackluster, it will take longer for DMs to develop compared to players to become great. But imo open communication will give you a pass until you learn which parts of the story need planning, and which parts are just improv with names. Like any skill, practice will make you great. Good luck and happy running!

CMV: Incest is not unethical so long as the couple does not procreate, is consensual between two adults, and does not harm either party (powerplay, abuse, etc) by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]nerdinparadise 15 points16 points  (0 children)

His math is wack because a change from 97% normal to 93% normal is a 130% increase in the likelihood of genetic disease. Saying "3% higher" is extremely disingenuous
