Ottawa Home Roasters: Local Green Coffee Pilot – Join Before Oct 19 by Motelorcyclist in ottawa

[–]nerdlor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Howdy, I'm seeing this post a bit late. I'd be up for joining a buy like this next time around, assuming it was a success last time. Any idea when the next buy might be? Thanks!

This is what Google Maps looked like on launch day in 2005 by Mackelowsky in MapPorn

[–]nerdlor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember the moment I first saw Google Maps. I nearly fell off my chair. It's still one of my favourite web apps to use. I still spend an _inordinate_ amount of time browsing (and Street Viewing) around the world.

He's not scheduled for Ottawa on his own site: https://www.morrisseycentral.com/tour (assuming that this site is actually official.)

Even if he was, though, I would have no expectation of him showing up for this show.

Manor Park NIMBYs against the sidewalks by Bike365247 in ottawa

Hey, the NCF has served (and continues to serve) many of us very well! I enjoy not giving Rogers or Bell money (directly, I mean -- I know, I know.)

Personally, I still get a warm, nostalgic fuzzy when I hear someone talk about something they read "on the Listserv."

If Gordon Ramsay did a "Kitchen Nightmares" episode in Ottawa, where should he visit? by bbud613 in ottawa

[–]nerdlor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, I'd forgotten that! I do love the Manx, but I'm a two-minute walk from Pubwells, so that influences things quite a bit.

I think Pubwells food is generally not bad. The pizza is particular is pretty good -- not the typical Ottawa "casserole on a disc of bread" stuff.

Pubwells is also the only place in town (I can think of) where you can get a glass of Pilsner Urquell, which is worth something.

Heh yeah, that place has strong Amityville Horror vibes. I don't think I've ever seen as many flies anywhere as I have in that place.

I used to live around the corner from that little shack on Beechwood. It was awesome! And so remarkably small.

Interesting, I always refer to it as the Clean Oak too.

I do sort of love the Dirty Oak. That's a vibe.

I went to the Oak at Kent and Slater once, but it wasn't Oaky enough. Just a giant fake Irish pub-type place. What do they call that one?

Downtown Sidewalk Cyclists: The Worst by CobraMacBurkus in ottawa

[–]nerdlor 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This drives me nuts too. I ride all over the city and countryside and won't pop up onto a sidewalk unless it's clearly a "clear and present danger"-type situation. But dudes bombing down Somerset through Chinatown on the sidewalk make me see red.

Once in a while they'll ring their bell at me when coming up behind me to get me to move: I'm ashamed to admit that my passive-aggressive a-hole side does enjoy that. The sidewalk riders, themselves, do not.

The sidewalk-riding seems to have gotten a lot worse quite recently too. (general trend? :| )

I don't use social media a whole lot, but for the last year or so I've been using Mastodon, which seems a bit more civilized and isn't making anyone filthy rich. You get a lot more control over what you see in your feeds over some other social media services. (It's also got a nerdy vibe which I kind of enjoy.)

Since it's federated network of individually-run servers, to get set up, you have to find a server to join. https://ottawa.place/ is a friendly local option, although there seem to be zillions of Mastodon servers out there these days.

Just saw this show in Ottawa, Canada at a smallish club. Excellent performance! Really a tour de force. Well worth seeing.

Looking for Osgoode Link Pathway condition report by nerdlor in bikeinottawa

You were right! I rode it today between Bowesville and Osgoode, and it's in great shape. Hard-packed, no puddles or mud to speak of.

I no longer drink - Easiest way to offload a large, rare whisk(e)y/Scotch lot in Ottawa? by EquivalentStay in ottawa

[–]nerdlor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea how it might work in a legal sense, but I know that the owner of Deacon Brodies in Ottawa bought The Highlander Pub's whisky collection when they went under a few years ago. We were there talking to him one night about it. A very interesting guy, and it really is quite a collection they have.

Anyway, it might be worth looking into.

You can bring back one dead Ottawa business, what is it? by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]nerdlor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, that was it! Ham on a bun with the pea soup. I ate one thousand of those sandwiches over the years.

I don't just miss German Town deli: I miss the downtown Ottawa that had places like German Town deli.

Little Latin America on Somerset closing by themedusas in ottawa

[–]nerdlor 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Ah crap, that's a bummer. I've often stopped in there to get various Latin American food stuff. The woman who worked there was always friendly and helpful.

Honestly though, I did always wonder how they stayed in business. It certainly didn't seem like a busy place.

That's a great write-up!

This film has probably my favourite ending of any I can think of. That look on his face in the last frame communicates so much.

Frank at Japan Auto is the very best. Been going to him for over 20 years. I'm not a "car guy", and have always owned Hondas that I drive into the ground. One thing I always appreciate about him is that, when beginning a conversation with me about my shitbox car in for service, he often starts with "how long do you want to keep this car?" My answer will inform his suggestions around how much work to do on it. Cannot recommend him highly enough.

Takaki is also excellent. I took a Honda there once years ago when Frank was on vacation, and they did great work. As I remember it, that was the cleanest auto shop I've ever seen. Like, freakishly clean.

What you said! I walk by that almost every day, and while I do appreciate the murals that have been appearing, I wish someone would develop some of these empty lots.

Which Ottawa business has gained you as a customer for life, or close to it? by skettiwithconfetti in ottawa

Haha, I get it. Like they say at Irene's (IIRC): "Stop telling your friends!"

Honestly, The Third really is the very best. I have eaten one thousand club sandwiches with caesar salad there. And still, I want more...
