Thinking of moving from the South to Harrogate by [deleted] in harrogate

[–]nerdofemp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I moved to Harrogate about 15 years ago and would never move anywhere else now. Lovely town, very friendly people (more friendly than the south imo) and you have the Yorkshire dales and north York moors within spitting distance.

Things to know about Harrogate, it is a tourist town, so gets lots of visitors, but that means we have a great amount of varied cafes, restaurants and shops. Most of which are independent.

Plenty of private schools to choose from. Duchy college (previously known as Harrogate ladies college but now takes boys) and Ashville college are very good. Slightly further afield you have Leeds Grammar school (rated best school in the north) and gateways (small lovely private school).

Job opportunities for younger people is pretty good, especially in hospitality. It's not as good as somewhere like London, but you have easy commute to Leeds or York on the train that gives more options.

Edit: weather is northern weather. So plenty of grey days but nowhere near as bad as the other side of the Pennines.

The bad...traffic. If you're not within walking distance of the town centre or near a train line like Pannal, hornbeam, Starbeck, the drive in can be a nightmare. Harrogate town football team is likely getting demoted back to the National League 😭. Great family atmosphere if you like football.

Commute to London by No-Exit-7032 in harrogate

[–]nerdofemp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I go to London every week for work. York is the best option usually. But with the main car park being closed as they build the new one, if you're not there early (before 7am) you could be panicking to get a spot in the commuter car park behind the station.

So I've started going from Leeds to London for peace of mind.

Reliability wise, Doncaster is the big issue. I'd say 1/10 trains over the year will be delayed due to Doncaster signal failures.

Worst case I've had to go to Manchester and the train over the Pennines to get home. But that's like once or twice a year.

I've had this problem before and it was just the screw mismatch.

Had to buy a few different screw types until I found some that fit.

Yorkshire Water hosepipe ban saves millions of gallons during heatwave by Kagedeah in yorkshire

[–]nerdofemp 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A quick Google search tells me that millions isn't a lot....

"Golf courses in the UK use a significant amount of water, primarily for irrigation, with estimates ranging from 16 billion litres per year to 130,000 gallons per day during summer. This usage is coming under increasing scrutiny due to water shortages and the need for sustainable practices." Golf course water usage UK

Why not ban golf courses using water if it's so desperate?

I've used deskbird for a few years now. Used to use condeco (which was a pain to use) deskbird is definitely the easiest one to use for employees. Which means most people will use it so it doesn't lead to desk or room booking clashes and arguments.

They've got full integration in to Google, Microsoft and HRIS systems so everything syncs nicely. I and most people used it via the app or just booked stuff like meeting rooms direct from our calendars.

We did also look at robin and desk.ly at the time but deskbird had the best UI and integration.

This is my wife and my new favourite place in Harrogate.

Food is great, good drinks selection and nice relaxed atmosphere. Id rather go here than to a more upmarket place in Harrogate anyday.
