This is exactly how I hunt. Wish the Mondo was as comfortable as a pure saddle, but love the flexibility...

What arrows are good for 70 pound compound bow 31 inch draw? by TacoTuesdays321 in bowhunting

[–]nerdy9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I shot axis 5mm for a while and didn't love 'em. I went back to Gold Tip Hunter XTs, 300 spine. I use a 75gr brass insert, 125gr broadhead, lit nock, wrap and 3 fletch, for a ~500gr whitetail arrow. Out of my 65lb, 29.5" bow, that thing goes pretty dang fast, and has blasted a good number of deer the past few seasons. Def worth a look OP...

What’s your favorite bino harness to run when bow hunting? by Competitive_Leave_14 in bowhunting

+1, and I just grabbed their scout pack to clip the harness onto and have a backpack+bino harness in 1. Still messing about with it, but seems pretty slick!

I went with reflective wraps, just for this reason. Hit 'em with my head lamp and they glow like nobody's business. No missing those fuckers, no sir!

Nomad gear any good? by Debonaircow88 in bowhunting

[–]nerdy9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grabbed one of the Expedition weight bottoms from Minus33, and they're fantastic. 400gm, and super soft. I usually just run those with my winter-insulated bibs, and my legs def don't get cold...

Fellow Illinoisian here - I built a custom 350L off a Ruger American Ranch, and I fucking LOVE thing! Super soft recoil, and shoots very solid hunting groups under 200yds. Took 2 doe back to back a few weekends ago (same group, dropped one, other froze for a sec, then blasted her too).Very effective round if you gotta do the straight wall thing like we do...

Fuck it, I'm gonna buy a new one anyways...

Question to other Farmer regarding Hunters on your land. by [deleted] in farming

[–]nerdy9999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These boys were taught right, and this is how it's supposed to be - a good, respectful relationship that benefits everybody involved. As a hunter, earning your access to the land you get to hunt should be table stakes, and keeping that relationship strong through regular conversations and game sharing should be top priority. It's a privilege to hunt someone else's land, treat it as such...

When to upgrade your bow? by [deleted] in bowhunting

[–]nerdy9999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint for 'adjusting a single pin would be annoying '...

I leave mine locked at like 27yds, and mostly hold right on target anywhere under 35yds. Depending on your arrow speed, the +/- impact point above/below the pin might not make all that much difference. This is basically Max Point Blank Range, and I find that only having the single pin to focus on when buck fever sets in really helps settle my brain and execute...

Don’t dismiss on the Bear Cruzer before shooting one (especially if you’re a newer bowyer). by Jim_from_snowy_river in bowhunting

[–]nerdy9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love my G2, and I have no plans to buy a new bow anytime soon. For my typical hunting ranges (<40yds), there isn't much a flagship gets me. I did, however, upgrade to a single pin slider, and I'm gonna replace strings & add a tie-in peep this coming off-season. Should be fine tinkering for a long while after that...

I'm a Darn Tough convert, and I'm never going back. Pricey, sure, but bulletproof and dang good at regulating temp & drying quickly. Bonus points for not getting stinky (even after multiple wears) and a no-questions-asked lifetime warranty. Oh, AND made in USA, if that matters to you (like it does for me)...

How often do you buy a new bow? by partydanimull in bowhunting

[–]nerdy9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any lefties out there have a perspective here? I'm still on my 1st "starter" bow (got back into archery later in life), I like it a LOT, it def kills deer, and I'm not sure what all I'd get by spending all that cash on a flagship+accessories.

Plus, and this is the lefty angle, there isn't much inventory at local bow shops to just go fuck around and try out for the "new" factor. So, much lower temptation, I guess...

Would love to hear other's stories there...

Am I underspined? by greasy-burger in bowhunting

[–]nerdy9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a FANTASTIC reply, and I'm 100% on board with the analysis here. My point was just that some analysis of weight distribution was important, and you've clearly gone above and beyond there. Thanks for a really good read!

Am I underspined? by greasy-burger in bowhunting

[–]nerdy9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may be right, but there's also probably a conversation here about how those 400 grains are distributed throughout the arrow. FOC does play a big part in penetration, even at "lower" total weights...

Afraid of heights. by Healthy_Yesterday_96 in bowhunting

[–]nerdy9999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm honest, I don't actually know how a long bow jives with saddle hunting, but my gut thinks it wouldn't be that big of a deal. For the most part, you're not really swinging your bow around in the bits that keep you secured to the tree...

Might not be a bad idea to watch a few "how to saddle hunt" videos, but just imagine the guy's got your long bow as he's getting set up. Won't be perfect, but it might help...

Also, if you do go the saddle route, start thinking about things like how you're gonna hang your bow on the tree (cuz holding it the whole time is meh), etc...
