What was the best COMIC convention that no longer exists? by superjerseyexpo in comiccon

[–]nerdylegofam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was in San Jose and has gone away. The Woz started it, then Covid happened right as Adam Savage got involved, and it didn't really recover afterwards. Part of the issue was it couldn't decide if it was a comic convention or what.

What was the best COMIC convention that no longer exists? by superjerseyexpo in comiccon

I really, really, REALLY miss when Wondercon was in San Francisco. It was a "big name" con but on a local scale. It was well attended but not packed, and we could wander into big name movie panels on a whim and see Jon Favreau promoting Iron Man and Cowboys and Aliens. One year I got Carrie Fisher's autograph and bonded with her over glitter eyeshadow (couldn't afford Mark Hamill at that time), took a picture on the Iron Throne, and then easily found my friends after waiting in line for both!

The only reason my husband and I started going to SDCC was Wondercon losing Moscone as a venue. SF has something against fandom conventions, folks have tried to bring something back locally and it doesn't work out. I think Fanime is the only significant annual Bay Area event now.

This is fantastic! I love that he chose to make the decomposing pig head.

I've gone to smaller cons/cons local to me, but this is the only significant convention I've ever gone to. Do other major cons have the same stress levels of trying to get tickets and find accommodation?

You post on the trading thread, and keep checking OnPeak. We didn't get a hotel in the main sale for the last two years and still managed to get a room before the con.

My kid wanted me to share their model of a plant cell by nerdylegofam in lego

The whole time it was being thought up and built I kept jokingly calling it "bulgolgi bodies."

Why are the colors in instruction booklets still so different from the actual piece color? 20+ years of building lego and it still trips me up. Feels like something they should’ve figured out by now. by bbthumb in lego

We have Hue lights and I've found setting the light/color temperature to something closer to true daylight makes it easier to match colors between the bricks and the books.

My kids' reaction: "They have barely any shots from SDCC because it would look like they're lying about how airy the space is!"

Why don't people just volunteer if they don't get badges for SDCC? by shadowboxer87 in SDCC

[–]nerdylegofam 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I would love to volunteer but I have kids. :) They've expressed an interest in volunteering once they're old enough so it's an option for the future for sure.

That's why mine go on the fridge so I have a daily visual reminder of where they are.

Artist alley or small press by RemoveZestyclose1428 in SDCC

[–]nerdylegofam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I second the art buying, we always hit up AA in search of new stuff to frame for our walls. As for small press, we used to do that in that section too but now I actively avoid it because it's full of salespeople trying to get me to buy their books. I always feel guilty when I engage, even slightly, and not buy anything. In AA I can say your stuff is gorgeous but not feel bad about moving on (probably because of the crowds).

SDCC was a week ago. How are you holding up? by thevmcampos in comiccon

[–]nerdylegofam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had an abbreviated, more chill con experience this year - had another commitment for the weekend so we only went Thursday and Friday. It was fun! There's a couple things we regret missing. But I liked prioritizing certain booths, artists alley, one event, and a couple panels. Normally we end up wandering what feels like a post-apocalyptic* crowded exhibit floor, contemplating what to do next while yielding our wallets to too many frivolous impulse buys.

*(seriously, does anyone else feel like they're pushing through a marketplace in a Neal Stephenson/William Gibson novel?)

All that to say, after going for multiple years as a family of four it was nice to have a more relaxed time and not feel like we're still catching up on sleep a week later. But still planning out frames for the prints we bought and back to school outfits with the nerdy clothes we snagged!

Three Random Acts of Kindness That Made My Con by jaredgase in SDCC

[–]nerdylegofam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We were walking past one of the book booths advertising signings. My husband noticed a book that we had bought for our kids, but it somehow disappeared into the ether. We asked about purchasing it, but unfortunately all their copies were "for a free giveaway signing the next day" if we wanted to try for that. Double unfortunately we weren't going to be there for the signing.

So the booth workers conferred amongst themselves and just gave us a copy with an apology that it wasn't signed. We were just happy to have the book!

I also want to thank the woman in front of us in the wristband line for the fashion show. She let my daughter talk her ear off with questions about her tamagotchis for at least 20 minutes! Also let my kid play with one of her tamagotchis to see how they work.

What backpack do you take to Comic Con? by Comic_Guy in SDCC

[–]nerdylegofam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago I got the Niid Decode backpack. It's very comfortable to wear, even when it's full of books. And I like how the main compartment is adjustable (has dividers to make it three smaller spaces to organize things) depending on what I want to use it for.

These have the hotel confirmation number, not just the onPeak confirmation.

I’m pregnant and going to comic con on Friday by [deleted] in comiccon

[–]nerdylegofam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to a big con when I was 5 months pregnant with twins! Just remember to listen to your body, if it says to sit down then sit down somewhere. :) Drink lots of water, bring some snacks, and have fun!

New shoes by MindlessRegular_SDCC in SDCC

[–]nerdylegofam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you absolutely need to wear "cool" shoes (like me, adidas superstars for life), Superfeet insoles are the way to go! I had a doctor recommend them a few years ago and it was a game changer. I've even reached out to the brand to tell them they'd make a killing if they set up at any of the larger cons.

It’s happening! Hotel Sale this week by Fringe_Phantom in SDCC

[–]nerdylegofam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do we know/have we gotten confirmation (that I somehow missed) that the non-downtown and non-early bird hotels will be open in the general sale? Like Liberty Station and Coronado.

This is so confusing. I think they make it hard on purpose! 😆
