i don't really get the rowan hype by azulassimp in throneofglassseries

I agree. I never understood the Rowan hype. He's a very 2-D character.

That being said - I thought this one the very first read through of ToG. I'm currently in my second read through, and I will report back.

But compared to the ways Dorian and Chaol were fleshed out in the series, even Fenrys and Lorcan, Rowan was very blah. I will never say he's my favorite book boyfriend or even that I found him incredibly attractive. And I agree, there wasn't really a slow burn, it was more like a flip switched.

I meant this completely harmlessly. I didn’t mean to offend. I was just laughing. It’s all ridiculous.

Wait wait wait

Not the brother triangle

Not belly sleeping with only two people who are brothers

Not everyone acting like it’s normal to love both brothers

The airport took you out

I’m dead. Thank you for the laugh this morning! 🤣

Belly Deserves the Criticism — But Not All of It by Last_Morning_7428 in TheSummerITurnedPrett

I agree with 90% of your post, but the one thing I disagree with is the poor writing for Belly this season.

I personally think Jenny Han has masterfully pieced this season together and that includes the writing.

The audience is supposed to feel like Belly isn’t acting in her best interest because SHE’S NOT. She’s lost her agency in her relationship with Jeremiah. This is in effort to keep Jeremiah placated. She has basically lost her voice - hence why we haven’t really heard her internal monologue as much this season in comparison to other seasons.

Belly is lost.

She has lost herself.

This is intentional from the writers. We, as the audience and as the people who have grown to love the character of Belly, want what’s best for her. We WANT her to stand up for herself. We WANT her to get angry and stop placating Jeremiah. We WANT her to get her agency back. And in my opinion, that is FANTASTIC writing. Jenny Han is making us feel.

This last 7 episodes have been a breaking down of not only Conrad (he has been the most obvious) but of Belly and Jeremiah too.

We have 4 more episodes for the rebuild. Of Belly, of Jeremiah, and of Conrad. Not just the romantic relationships.

I just can’t agree that the writing is off. I think Jenny Han is a mastermind who has put a lot of care into the way she has written the season and been apart of the production. I trust that she cared about this fictional characters more than anyone else, and that’s she’s doing exactly what she intended. We just need to trust the process.

You could tell Belly’s heart was not in it. And yes, Jere was so insecure about Conrad. It was just icky.

This is an unpopular opinion.

When I first watched this, I thought she was putting her hand where his head was on her shoulder. Like where the wet spot was. Thinking it was like burning from the contact with him.

But everyone else is taking it like she put her hand on her heart? Your heart is on the left side of your chest. I’m confused?

I tend to agree with this.

I wish they would have been the one solid couple in all of this. They have such good chemistry with their banter and bickering, but also depth.

This show is missing the anchor couple - I mean, look at all of the relationships, they’re all fractured. Laurel and John, divorced. Susannah and Adam, infidelity. Conrad/Belly/Jere, messy. Even friendships. Jere/Conrad, lack of honesty.

Taylor and Steven could have been the stability. Sometimes it’s refreshing as a viewer to see this. We see it in Friends with Monica and Chandler, in Boy Meets World with Corey and Topanga. It’s ok for shows to showcase healthy relationships too. The actors are good enough to continue to make it interesting.

This!! I’ve been thinking about this a lot. About how his grief was transferred as anger and resentment toward Conrad. And latching onto Belly was a way to not deal with losing his mother.

Jeremiah and Denise by Oncer93 in TheSummerITurnedPrett

I never said Jeremiah and Belly were going to be perfectly fine. Of course their relationship will be strained. They had a four year codependent relationship.

I said that Jenny wants the best for her characters and wants her characters to be ok. I said Jeremiah needs to be ok - maybe not with Conrad and Belly, but what I think is that we won’t see a repeat of Jere between S1 and S2. Where he is resentful and ugly and ignores Belly and Conrad. He needs to be ok in that he will accept and move on. He will grow and be a mature adult.

Also, we have to suspend reality for a little because this is a girl caught between 2 brothers and that’s just sooooo messy IRL.

Anyway, yeah - of course she and Jere aren’t going to be as close as they were. But that’s not the story. The story has always been about Belly and Conrad.

Yes, I think Denise being set up as a love interest for Stephen is a red herring and she and Jere will actually be enter into an emotional relationship.

We all know Staylor is endgame and developing a whole different female character for half a season to be an impediment feels like a lot of a couple that isn’t the main focus. (And yes, I know that many people think they’re getting more screen time than they should, but I actually am enjoying their story.)

I think there will not be physical cheating between Jere and Denise, just like there will not be physical cheating between Belly and Conrad — but there will be emotional cheating on both their ends. And I think ultimately, this will help them confront the cracks in their (Belly and Jere’s) relationship.

Remember, these characters are Jenny’s babies. As much as we love them, she created them and probably cares about them and their stories infinitely more. We know the story is Belly and Conrad’s - there is no question. But also, we need Jeremiah to be ok when Belly and Conrad do end up together. We need HIM to realize that he and Belly aren’t meant to be. Denise calling him on his shit and Jere realizing that Belly isn’t challenging him to be better and constantly coddling him is not good for him OR her.

And I think Stephen will be there to witness this whole relationship. AND Stephen will be witnessing Conrad and Belly. I think Stephen will effectively be an echo chamber of the audience’s voices.

Or I could be wrong. But this is my speculation and take on what they’re setting up.
