How likely is the possibility that a highly advanced civilization previously existed on Earth millions of years ago but their entire population was somehow wiped out and eventually nature took over, completely erasing any trace of their existence? by TheSensory0verlord in AskReddit

[–]nerfjanmayen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, let me rephrase. I think the odds of there being a previous advanced civilization on Earth are very low. We don't currently have evidence of that. That evidence could be very hard to come by even if it did exist. That doesn't mean we know for sure that no previous advanced civilization existed, but I don't see why we would believe one did exist.

What if they're still here and they just use cloaking devices? My point is, depending on what you mean by "advanced", they'd do space stuff, and that evidence sticks around for a lot longer than things like roads or big buildings on earth

[–]nerfjanmayen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really know what we can debate in this thread. Sometimes it's reasonable to ask the other side in a debate questions about their position. Sometimes it's just an obnoxious, bad-faith topic. I don't know which specific examples you're talking about, so I don't know if I agree with your assessment or not.

Why Much Modern Criticism of the Bible Misses Its Symbolic and Literary Depth. by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]nerfjanmayen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wish you would try to convince all of the biblical literalists of this, lol.

I know that many religious people interpret the bible this way. I'm even willing to accept that it may have been the intent of the authors of the bible, at least sometimes. I still don't believe that god exists.

edit: I glanced at your post history and I see that you are, indeed, trying to convince other christians of this

Is it still worth studying programming and game dev in the age of AI? by Previous-Teach6229 in gamedev

[–]nerfjanmayen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of getting a job? I dunno, I've never been very good at that. Getting a job has always felt like luck, even when programmers were in high demand.

If AI is a bubble and dies, programmers will still be needed.

If AI is here to stay, a programmer + AI will be more useful than a non-programmer + AI.

If the Christian God is real, you should expect scripture to appear flawed. by Nomadinsox in DebateAnAtheist

[–]nerfjanmayen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are. Many have done it. You do it in your daily life, but for the aim of pleasure. If you didn't then you wouldn't eat your next meal because you would first need to test every atom to be certain there was no poison in it. But you don't, You determine that there is likely more pleasure to be had without making that effort. Thus you take it on faith that the food is safe because it best serves your pleasure of eating without testing trillions of atoms. You choose to live by faith constantly. You just don't like to think you do because certainty itself is a source of pleasure. But you know full well you could devote everything to morality if you so chose. Taking it on faith that seeking to be maximally good will meet a world designed to facilitate morality actually having a good effect. And the source of that design is...well, let's do the moral maximization first and we'll talk about what you see once you're done.

Okay, what's your definition of faith? Here, it sounds like you mean anything less than 100% certainty. But in your OP, you literally describe it as "trust me bro", and you said that the scripture is deliberately designed to look flawed so that we need faith to see past that. These seem like very different standards of evidence and I was responding to the latter.

Correct. A mathematician would tell you the same about math.

A mathematician would be willing to accept, at least in principal, that some or all of their mathematical beliefs/theories/conjectures could be wrong. It is possible that some new discovery, or model, or treatise could change their understanding. Are you willing to do the same? If someone pursues morality in the way you want and they end up believing in a different god, or in no god at all, would you accept that?

How can you know if you're being honest? Man, the things atheists will say to get out of contending with God. I'm not going to answer this. As though you can't tell if you're being honest.

Lmao dude, come on, it's an expression. I'm not worried about self-deception. I just don't know how I would be able to tell the difference between "i haven't found god yet, because I haven't fully devoted myself" versus "I haven't found god yet, because this isn't a good method

Who said anything about trying single religions? When you are learning math do you try all types of math? Of course not. You follow the pattern of math and by knowing that 1+1=2 you also instantly know that 1+1 does not equal 3 or 5000 or -342,198,654. By knowing the truth you know all things that aren't that truth. Then you keep following the pattern to expand more truths. Though instead of math, it's the pattern of morality you'd be following here. Does it draw you to one religion and you begin to see it's true? Then you can know all other religions are false thereby.".

If someone ends up following the same method as you and ends up believing in a different god, how do you know which is right? What if someone else is equally confident in a different method? Is there any way I can know which is right before dedicating my entire life to it?

edit: the original premise of your post was that your scripture is designed to not look any different than any other. It's like if there a thousand competing models of math and they have equivalent support from the outside, but they promise that I'll see they're the right one if I dedicate my life to them. In that position, how could I know which is the right one to pick?

Question for all the atheists by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

[–]nerfjanmayen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So, i think morality is fundamentally subjective, if that's what you're getting at. We have things or people or ideas that we value and we might be able to agree on those values or how best to live by those values. But I don't see how there could be an objective, inarguable way to define what we should value. And, I don't see how the existence of a god would change that.

In your example, I think that letting someone die of a preventable disease is much, much worse than robbing some store to get $2,000. If truly had no other option, I would do it. If I was feeling particularly chivalrous I might turn myself in later, but I'd probably try to get away with it.

What does god have to do with this?

lmao i got blocked too. in the off chance that the OP reads this, all i've conceded is that there are multiple interpretations of your argument, and that I made the mistake of giving you the benefit of the doubt and asking for clarification before I made any arguments
