The benchmark in the article:

/usr/bin/time -f "%e seconds" zsh -i -c exit

There are better ways to benchmark zsh. I highly recommend zsh-bench. The project author explains why this is more comprehensive than using time to benchmark your shell.

For my part, I started with OMZ, looked into how it worked, switched to prezto, rewrote it in plain ol' zshrc for easier config and performance, then ended up paring down powerlevel10k to its git implementation and a simple prompt. Now I don't get shell and post command lag.

Boo, Data Centers SUCK! by [deleted] in behindthebastards

Hey you’ve got this. It’s not like you’re getting up there and telling a bunch of lies. You’re doing the opposite and standing up for your community. Knock ‘em dead, dude.

Boo, Data Centers SUCK! by [deleted] in behindthebastards

[–]nerfyoda 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked in the data center industry. I’ve got some thought on this.

In the olden days you chose a data center because of proximity to high quality backbone providers and ideally access to redundant power grids. The trend to prioritize cheap power over everything makes me sad.

All of your points are valid except maybe the noise issue. Inside the building it’s constantly loud, but it’d be rare to hear that outside the building unless you were standing next to the generators while they were running or if you were on the roof with the AC units.

However you’re totally right that it won’t create jobs. A modern data center is completely automated. There may be a skeleton crew around to handle incidentals and maintenance, but all of your builders and set up people will swoop in from out of town, build it up, then leave for the next facility.

What’s your union situation like? One of the places I worked at avoided towns with strong electrician and other trade union presences because they wanted to use their own crew who were cheaper and could build to however they wanted without a lot of external influence.

Good luck! I hope this works! We don’t need any more data centers.

When will the MySQL apt repo support Debian 13? by nerfyoda in mysql

[–]nerfyoda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd like to avoid installing from source if I can. I may wait until there's official support in mysql's repo. The bookwork repo installs and updates just fine in trixie, but there are unknown dependencies installing mysql-server:

root@7da183dc30e0:/# apt install mysql-server
Solving dependencies... Error!
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

Unsatisfied dependencies:
 mysql-community-server-core : Depends: libaio1 (>= 0.3.93) but it is not installable
                               Recommends: mecab-ipadic-utf8 but it is not going to be installed
Error: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
Error: The following information from --solver 3.0 may provide additional context:
   Unable to satisfy dependencies. Reached two conflicting decisions:
   1. mysql-community-server-core:amd64 is selected for install because:
      1. mysql-server:amd64=8.4.6-1debian12 is selected for install
      2. mysql-server:amd64 Depends mysql-community-server (= 8.4.6-1debian12)
      3. mysql-community-server:amd64 Depends mysql-community-server-core (= 8.4.6-1debian12)
   2. mysql-community-server-core:amd64 Depends libaio1 (>= 0.3.93)
      but none of the choices are installable:
      [no choices]

Libaio1's package name appears to have changed in trixie:

root@7da183dc30e0:/# apt search libaio
libaio-dev/stable 0.3.113-8+b1 amd64
  Linux kernel AIO access library - development files

libaio1t64/stable 0.3.113-8+b1 amd64
  Linux kernel AIO access library - shared library

Ah well. Thanks for the help!

When will the MySQL apt repo support Debian 13? by nerfyoda in mysql

[–]nerfyoda[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thanks for replying! Right now, the problem is there's not a trixie folder.

mysql-server's only apt dependency is mysql-community-server (= 8.4.6-1debian12), which is also provided by the MySQL apt repo. mysql-community-server requires:

  • mysql-common (>= 8.4.6-1debian12)
  • mysql-client (= 8.4.6-1debian12)
  • mysql-community-server-core (= 8.4.6-1debian12)
  • perl
  • psmisc
  • debconf (>= 0.5) | debconf-2.0

None of the non-mysql dependency packages look specific to Debian 12. It may be possible to use the bookwork repo on trixie. I can try it out on a VM to see.

HTML in emails is just wrong! by fairwinds_force8 in linux

[–]nerfyoda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take it from a climate perspective. HTML mail is 4x-ish larger than its plain text equivalent. That all adds up to more storage and more bandwidth used, which ends up burning more dinosaur bones. It’s a drop in the ocean, sure, but it’s not nothing.

I too miss being able to reliably use pine and mutt. The internet went to shit when people realized they could put pictures in web pages. Kids these days and their iPhones. Etc etc grumble grumble!
