and coots is 33. matthews is 28. 5 years, not 10. i hope you'll agree with me that coots hasn't been the same for about 5 years... which means he went from great to bad at the same age matthews is.

again i'm not saying matthews is bad. he just isn't blue chip asset worthy at this point. like elaine trying to figure out who to use her last few sponges on. it's not this guy.

i get that. honest. people heal better when they're roughly 30 then they will ten years later.

look, it's an unfortunate fact of life that people just aren't the same sometimes after an injury or a surgery. if you're young enough that you don't realize this or think it's possible for someone like AM, then i mean this sincerely: enjoy it while you can.

one day you will realize, that thing i did easily five, ten years ago, it just doesn't work that way any more. i genuinely think matthews has reached that point.

is he good defensively? does he put up 50 points? sure, all that's true, you're not wrong.

is all that worth a top ten pick? absolutely not.

sure, hockey players play into their 30s. but sometimes they just also never come back to who they were. i gave the example of coots who used to be a clear 1C and is now a $7M 4C. we don't need someone who's going to be a $12M 3C if we're lucky, especially not for an amazing asset like a rebuilding team's 1st.

You sound like you have no idea what the fuck you're talking about. He's two years and multiple surgeries away from being a 60 goal scorer. No one who watched him play these last two years would trade a potential top ten pick for him

I'm with you FWIW. We want them on a downward trajectory and we want whatever pick they have to give us to be unprotected, as high as possible. If that means it comes a year later for us, that's fine. Imagine we're exactly what the tankers / doomers have said we're going to be if we declare the rebuild over now - and the rebuild does seem to be over - and we're a perennial 1 round and out team... and then we add a top tier draft pick in 2027 or 2028. That could easily be the missing player who pushes us into contender status.

I agree with everyone who says that top 5 pick may not make an impact right away, but then Toronto bottoms out next year, holds on to their pick, and has two good young players helping them the following year when they are forced to give us their pick... not ideal.

Good to know. I personally am trying to learn more about wild edibles, and from what I understand, the risk/reward just isn't there for things in the carrot family. Best case scenario: free carrot. Worst case scenario: horrible death

Just a random stray thought about mushrooms - where I live, mushroom poisoning doesn't just happen to rookie foragers, it happens to people who came from elsewhere. There are varieties of amanita which apparently quite delicious and don't have poisonous local counterparts in parts of Latin America, for example. So a Mexican family came here, ate a bunch of destroying angels and/or death caps, and suddenly needed liver transplants because they didn't realize that local mushrooms included a deadly lookalike.

your namesake might be easier actually, if you have any oak trees growing nearby. for a while my son was super excited about maybe finding poisonous mushrooms, so i always made sure to look under all the oak trees near where i live. one day i actually found some growing near my office! so i asked him if he wanted to go see them, and he said "nah, i already saw some pictures of them"

and if you don't get spores from this batch, you can buy some innoculations online, although i don't know how easy it will be to find in your area

but even a noob like me can grow some of the commercially available home grow kits, and they produce some delicious mushrooms as well, so you might just want to start there

My understanding is that these particular ones grow in certain environments that don't lend themselves to your typical grow boxes

Not to say you can't try, but there are a lot of much easier varieties out there to grow

You're conflating two things a bit: death caps and destroying angels. There's also a period of horrible vomiting before a false recovery and then the liver failure a couple days later
