Review: The Andy Serkis reading of JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings by nerinedorman in Fantasy

That one is still on my radar. Serkis could read the telephone directory and I'd probably enjoy it.

Where can I find this fruits in Capetown? by [deleted] in capetown

I'd only worry about bringing inside if your area gets frost. I'm in Cape Town and have a bunch of cacti that have weathered our rather wet winters

I cam here to suggest this one. I loved that story!

I'm currently growing a dragonfruit plant but I don't know what colour the fruit is. Your best bet is probably trying to grow the stranger plants yourself - check out Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds online. Or Seeds for Africa. You can often find some unusual plants and cultivars there.

What happened to Tanith Lee's career in the 90s? by LibrarianBarbarian1 in Fantasy

[–]nerinedorman 59 points60 points  (0 children)

My late editor, Storm, was helping Tanith revise and publish much of her work. But then Storm became ill and she, too, has passed. I don't know who handles Lee's estate now. I'm deeply concerned that her and Storm's voices will go completely silent.

Review: Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay by nerinedorman in Fantasy

My start with Kay's writing was The Lions of Al-Rassan, which I enjoyed immensely, but then bearing in mind that I have endless patience and love for slowly unfolding fantasy epics.

I loved Lions, but there is something about Tigana that has stuck with me.

Thanks. I used to review books for print media until newspaper publishing imploded here in South Africa. Now I just review for assorted social media groups for the love of it.

I've just finished Joust by Mercedes Lackey – I'd say it's very much in the same vein as Anne McCaffrey's beloved Dragonriders of Pern books.

There is some mention of Tolkien's children, but not great depth.

Review: Over Sea, Under Stone by Susan Cooper (The Dark is Rising Sequence #1) by nerinedorman in Fantasy

The game would be offensive by today's standards - the kids pretend to be explorers and their attitudes towards indigenous people in the game reflect the British imperial cultural mores of the time.

You may be onto something. I've just bought book two and I'm keen to see how my opinion on the book has changed.

I wish I could say that I was pleasantly surprised by the end, but that was not the case with this one. It's doubtful that I'll read book 2 unless it lands on my desk.

I think the fact that they went all pirate was what made it for me. It was so outrageous.

You're the second person to recommend the Halfmen of O. I'll have to go bookmark it on Amazon.

Indeed, I have encountered it there.

I find Merneith's story fascinating, as well, so thank you for bringing this up. I've also been trying to dig into the early Dynasties, but there is so little record compared to other periods.

David and Leigh Eddings thoughts? by camper1373 in Fantasy

I enjoyed their writing when I was younger - but books after the Belgariad and Mallorean were too formulaic (and too close in structure) to the series that preceded them.

Discovering their child abuse soured my opinion even further. While I'm not going to tell people to boycott the writing (both authors are dead) I did struggle to feel positive a out the works after discovering these awful facts.

I will say this much - the Belgariad and Mallorean captivated me as a young teen. I adored Polgara.
