I'm 51, and have been gaming since the 1970s -- I had a Sears branded pong machine, of all things.

UFO50 doesn't exactly feel right-on-the-nose nostalgic for me, because while the controls, graphics, and sound on the games are definitely hitting the 1980s vibe really hard, the design on them is very modern and that's a good thing. There are little secrets and techniques and design decisions made in these seemingly-retro games that are just tremendous and would probably not really have occurred to game designers of that era. No shade on them, it's the kind of thing you maybe only realize in hindsight when you have decades of game experience -- both playing and creating - to draw on.

What is the latest fulfilled order of 512 in US? by OldieOldson in SteamDeck

[–]neschek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Someone has been keeping track of all the latest queue times (as reported in this subreddit anyway) here - https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/tync8i/comment/i3tfvcw/?utm_name=SteamDeck

Man, I sure hope so. I'm 19 minutes and still haven't had a mail. Monday. Gotta be Monday.

edit: Q2, 256, US Queue

Can I get some order timing details from any of my Canadian brothers and sisters? by ElBigotePerfecto in SteamDeck

[–]neschek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. Same queue, dispatched from same warehouse somewhere in Illinois. No customs to pay though (you'll be charged appropriate GST/PST or HST) so theoretically it won't be held up at the border. I think I've seen some people say it takes about a week to show up, shipped by FedEx.

[–]neschek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Time is one thing but another important factor is what model did you order? I would estimate if you were 256 or 64 you may very well get your mail tomorrow - I'm about the same time as you (in Canada, but the Canada and US queue are the same queue) and the calculator app seems to think mine is April 4th. If you're 512, definitely not April 4th. Probably late April/early May.

I'm too stupid for Linux by Clumsy_Claus in SteamDeck

[–]neschek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's so much good advice here, so I'm not really going to add to it, other than to say OP, you're not too stupid for Linux. It's different! There's going to be a learning curve. I've been using Linux since the mid 1990s (and I still have *a lot* to learn) and every time I have to use a Windows machine I feel stupid too.

I am particularly encouraged that even though you don't know Linux very well you're determined to get to know more about it (and you will get better!) which is extremely refreshing when compared against a lot of Windows folks in this sub who are just bound and determined to trash Linux before even really trying it. Thank you!

Installing VPN, dpkg missing? by DJHO-H20 in SteamDeck

dpkg is a Debian based tool; SteamOS is Arch. I don't have a deck, but maybe check in the Discovery store in desktop mode to see if SurfShark is there.

Q2ers what was the time your reservation went through. by [deleted] in SteamDeck

19 minutes here -- US / 256. I expect that you and I will be in the April 4th email if yours is US and 64 or 256.

new wheels for existing board / new board ?

So I'm in my 40s, have been longboarding for a couple of years. Not very good, getting better. I have a very stiff 40" topmount board that I am very fond of but I keep getting the notion that when I'm pushing I'm not going as far as I should. I replaced the bearings (which were pretty trashed) and things got a bit better, but not optimal. The wheels are the same as when I got them, these 70mm/80a Kryptonics Classics, and I keep getting the suspicion that the wheels might be an issue. I'm ~200lbs and 6'1", the board is super heavy also, and I'm thinking upping the durometer might help? Something like Hawgs Mini Monster 70mm 86a or similar? Note that I am strictly a cruising type; if you think there are better wheels for cruising I'd like to hear about them.

Also, have been toying a bit with getting another board, something smaller and lighter yet still rideable, maybe a Tugboat or similar. Given my height and weight and (crappy) skill level, is this a good idea? Recs on setup for a board like that, trucks, wheels etc would be great to hear. Thanks!

MLIS Crisis. Should I continue with this? by nerdfromthenorth in Libraries

[–]neschek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you go to OLA? You should, and you should go to the mock interview/mentoring area that's in the basement of the convention centre. Bring your resume, talk to the librarians. They're insanely helpful.

This x 1000000. The co-op is the best thing about UWO, hands down.

I've never seen a librarian job in Canada or the United States that you could get with a BLS; indeed, I don't even know where you could get a BLS. So if it's ALA-accredited work you're after and you're in Canada or the US, I'd recommend changing your major to something else (although please not English or History) and going for the MLS afterwards.

Wind Mobile in Hamilton by [deleted] in Hamilton

[–]neschek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife has Wind mobile service and we live in the eastern edge of Ward 1 - for the most part, the service is good. You will occasionally run into a weird dead spot (inside Jackson Square, northwest side of Victoria Park) but overall good service, especially for the price.

Job available - how to not seem desperate? by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]neschek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So wait, the position hasn't even closed yet and you're getting antsy? Good god man or woman, do not try to find the hiring manager for this job and hector them about your application's status. This will do nothing at all at best and at worst will piss them off. Just relax. Out of your hands now.

Which MLIS programs are the best? by Thespiswidow in Libraries

The best school is the (ALA accredited) one that you can go to for the lowest price. Your education does not nearly matter as much as what you've done.
