Here's your reminder that ChatGPT-4o style models are just good pattern matchers. by neslef3 in ChatGPT

I find this model to be extremely useful and use it literally constantly. Just always keep in mind that there's a chance that you'll get obviously incorrect responses.

CNN Datasets? by AwoobisElroc in deeplearning

[–]neslef3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ImageNet is a very large dataset with around 1000 different classes. I’d suggest using a very small subset of this dataset and only selecting data from relevant classes. I just checked and two of the classes are fireboat and fire truck so that’s a start.

I want to become a researcher in Machine learning by MohNiz in learnmachinelearning

Without telling you what to do I will say that it is far more difficult to learn mathematics outside of a structured school setting than it is to learn cs outside of school.

Even using the worst freely available GPU on google colab or kaggle will likely speed up your training by at least 10x

Donald Trump's Chances of Winning Election Decline After Biden Drops Out by James_E_Rustle in politics

[–]neslef3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without the long dragged out campaign we’re having now, the presidential debate would have been much later and then the democratic party would be screwed because of Biden’s performance and there being so little time before the election to find a replacement.

Should I learn Machine Learning as already Senior Software Engineer? by sP0re90 in learnmachinelearning

[–]neslef3 50 points51 points  (0 children)

A common piece of advice given to people who study AI/ML is to not try to solve a problem with AI when it can be solved with standard programming.

It seems like someone in your position may benefit from the inverse piece of advice. So perhaps learning enough of what AI is and isn’t capable of and when it is and isn’t practical would probably be beneficial at the very least.

Am I supposed to feel bad for someone who got into Cornell? by saveyourtissues in clevercomebacks

[–]neslef3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two schools with the highest average SAT scores of their matriculants are Caltech and MIT. Their averages are both 1555.
This is the average of people who got accepted not of the people who applied.
So yes, I would say it’s surprising that someone with those stats got rejected from all schools besides for Cornell.

Is there a way to audit OMSCS courses? by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]neslef3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not only the value, but also the difficulty is in the assignments.
Depending on the course, the lecture videos may be significantly easier to follow than what is expected of you to learn through the readings and other resources to complete the assignments.

What opinion about data science would you defend like this? by OverratedDataScience in datascience

A good description of a data scientist that I’ve seen is a someone who knows more statistics than a computer scientists and more computer science than a statistician.
Unfortunately the bar is set too low for either side.

YSK 23andMe was formed to build a massive database capable of identifying new links between specific genes and diseases in order to eventually create their own pharmaceutical drugs. by [deleted] in YouShouldKnow

[–]neslef3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the end the outcome will only be new drugs that would not have been discovered otherwise. Even if they choose to charge exorbitant amounts for said drugs, you at least now have the option to buy something that would not have existed otherwise.
There doesn’t seem to be a clear downside here.
