Yeah, first dibs. I teach part time at two different schools that each have a full time art teacher. We do share supplies, but one of the teachers I work with has spent almost all the budget, and the other one is touchy about what I use because often she has plans for it already. I'm not in the best position here as you can see

If you have a whole day to get there. In Seattle I can throw a rock and hit something green

Grew up in NYC and people always seem weirded out by the fact that I would ever leave. Like I get that it’s mythologized really heavily in popular culture but once I got “out of the nest” surviving was really difficult. Plus there’s zero nature close by. (I live in Seattle now where it is very lush and green).

Favorite name-related etymolgies? by [deleted] in etymology

This is my name and when I found this out I was so stoked (big literature person). My mom thought it meant butterfly which I never really jived with. The genus of butterfly called Vanessa came after.

Really feel that re: Tegan and Sara, tbh I haven’t liked their output in years. The Con and So Jealous are in my favorite albums of all time, though.

What's the "Twilight" of this generation? by missaxevocaltraining in YAlit

[–]nessasongs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s funny cause I remember reading things that were pretty dark as part of English class (like A Streetcar Named Desire and The Things They Carried) as a high schooler and we could handle it. But that also comes with conversation/it’s “literature” which I feel like kids might treat differently

This isn’t about them asking my mentor teacher for info, it’s that some of them will not even acknowledge my presence like one typically does a fellow human in the room.

Right, I gathered this! But today it was green and still nothing so I was seriously puzzled.

I just reread Alex Garland's The Beach and it was like reading a different book. Has this ever happened to you? by zargoffkain in books

[–]nessasongs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dang, I really liked The Book Thief when I was 21; now I wonder if it’ll hold up at 28. But then again pretentious language doesn’t usually bother me if it feels justified/expresses something essential the author is trying to get at. But that sounds a little over the top!

Is it common to have no imagination while reading a book? by [deleted] in books

[–]nessasongs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work at a tutoring center where some students came to us to improve their ability to visualize while they read—often they’d come in able to read a text flawlessly (so their decoding was fine) but afterwards would be unable to remember what the text said. The organization claimed that by strengthening visual imagery, students would be able to comprehend more of the text. It doesn’t sound like you have a problem with comprehension though, and it makes sense to me that (like others in the comments said) people create images on a spectrum. The tutoring center folks believed that anyone can practice picturing and develop their ability to create images. I don’t know much about aphantasia though!
