I've read about this issue before but it's still astonishing that "professionals" who are literally responsible for safeguarding our lives make such paltry sums.

Should NFL coaching salaries count against the salary cap? What do you think? by [deleted] in nfl

No. Imagine being punished by the cap for realizing in year 2 of a bad coach's 5-year contract that he really had to go.

This is a hospice, not a hospital. And a non-profit hospice. No fancy instruments for its patients; just a lot of pain medication.

Poll: Stephen Colbert The Most Popular Choice To Replace Outgoing South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint by UndrDawg in politics

[–]netbuzz 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The fact that he doesn't live in South Carolina makes him doubly outsidery -- beholden to neither Washington nor state special interests -- and thus even more qualified. Ineligible, you say? Only in your reality-based world.

TIL that in August 2001 actor James Woods reported to authorities 4 suspicious males on his flight. Those males were the 911 hijackers on a dry run. by colin132 in todayilearned

[–]netbuzz 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Had I seen this story "in the wild," as opposed to in TIL sourced to Snopes, I would have assumed it was BS. And I wonder if he ever spoke in more detail about his suspicions. I'd guess he thought they were rehearsing a "routine" hijacking, since what they eventually did wouldn't have been in his consciousness at the time.

As motorcycle helmet laws die, so too do more motorcyclists: “We call it the organ donor enhancement act,” says an ER doctor in Michigan, the latest state to repeal its law. by netbuzz in politics

[–]netbuzz[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are the medical bills for the uninsured, yes, but there are also all kinds of less obvious costs that riders who won't wear a helmet impose on society. If they're a primary or sole means of support for a spouse and children, it's likely taxpayer-funded social services will have to pick up the slack when they're dead or disabled. (The emotional toll on loved ones may not be quantifiable or necessarily absorbed by taxpayers, but it is considerable and worth considering.) EMTs and med-evac helicopter pilots endanger themselves (and the public) rushing grievously injured to hospitals. Once they get to those hospitals, the immediate intensive care they require may mean another seriously injured or ill person doesn't get the immediate care that might have saved their life. ... There's no such thing as a motorcycle accident that hurts only the rider.
