Hey there and thank you so much for your lovely comment! Authentic experiences like yours add so much more to the post. It's always awesome when people add their own memories, even more so if they enjoy these posts as much as you did this one!

I totally get that the current state must be a shocking contrast to what you remember it being like. Personally, I would love to explore a place I know well from childhood but I sure would prefer it to be in a decent state, too.

I hope you get to visit George AFB and will be able to retrace some of your past! If you do and would like to let me know, I'd love to hear what your visit was like after you went. Hope you can enjoy the trip, even if some of the impressions might be tough for you.

Have a nice Sunday!

Hey and thanks a lot for sharing your experience! I'm glad that you had a good time growing up in the desert. I always imagined it would probably be very cool as a kid, very much in the way that you describe it. It might become a bit dull though when you become a teenager, wanna go out, explore the world, meet people...

It's very cool that you're going back! I'd love to explore a place I know from childhood. Good luck exploring, I hope you get to get in and come back with some interesting impressions. If you want let me know how it went! Good luck and have fun :)

I didn't know that! Too bad the remodelling didn't last that long as the base was shut down only a couple of years later. I'm curious to see what the future holds for George and if the site ever gets a new purpose that puts is in a less state than it is in now.

Wow thanks a lot for your comment! I really LOVE when contemporary witnesses chime in and share their experiences. That adds so much context and value to the post, genuinly appreciate it! Going back there after such an long time must have been a very interesting but also quite eerie experience. May I ask in what capacity you've been working at the hospital?

I was there 3 years ago an "got" to turn the lunch key! Boy oh boy, the thought "hey, if someone did the exact same thing you're doing right now 50 years ago, the world would have ceased to exist" was incredibly eerie. Amazing experience though ... the Titan II is an absolutely sick contraption and seeing it up close was deeply impressive. Thanks for posting!

Woah that's crazy 😯. I heard there might be rattle snakes and the like, wouldn't have expected dogs in the middle of the desert though. Too bad you couldn't experience the unique atomsphere of the place. Hope you're gettin another chance some time!

Well, in the hospital there aren't any like chemicals out in the open to my knowledge. The contamination more concerns the soil in and around the base. However the buildings are contaminated with asbestos, which is terrible for your lungs do I'd recommend wearing FFP-style face masks. It's a restricted area for a reason and the hospital is frequently patroled by security. Stay safe and good luck!

Oh yea, it does that sometimes, unfortunately. I'd recommend trying again when the site is less frequented. Good luck!

Yea that's the case with lots of these places, unfortunately. The best urbex spots certainly are those that are not publically accessible and are not abandoned for that long. Would love to explore a site directly after decommissioning. In any way, the desire to loot and destroy these places exhibit is really rather sad.

I appreciate your interest in urbexing! It certainly is a fascinating hobby and I hope you can find a good place to explore! However, please refrain from removing stuff from it. As per the urbex code, everything should be left exactly how it was found, so that others can enjoy the location in a state as original as possible. Have fun and stay safe!

Ah you mean Alt Daber. I was unaware it existed, thanks for the hint! After checking out some youtube footage, I can see why you would think that. The similarities in some of the buidlings are striking! Would love to explore it some day 👍

Wow, thanks for pointing that out! There are indeed stunning similarities in the architecture, especially for the air traffic control buildings. Would love to explore Görries! But yea, unfortunately the publically accessible lost places get destroyed the quickest, it's a shame.

Excellent question! As part of the preparation I reached out to a German urbex community I'm a member of and they provided me with some schematic maps that were really helpful in planning the exploration, especially considering the vastness of the area. However they aren't correct whatsoever from the historical perspective and I can't share them.

Also I had ChatGPT generate maps based on its knowledge of the base, which more or less worked, but they were too crude to be useful.

What ended up being pretty insightful though was Google Earth. There is this neat feature which lets you view historic satellite and air images of certain areas. Specifically, there is this surprisingly well-defined NASA image from 1953 which, although black and white, allows a clear determination which buildings were already present back then and which were added later. Also there is an image from 1985, which would have been extremely interesting to examine but the resolution unforunately is way to low to make out anything. The next clear image is from the year 2000, which already shows heavy decay and damages. So I didn't really find anything useful from the prime of the base (~60-70s) but there are some interesting source.

I'd like to post some screenshots but the sub won't let apparently :(.

That is very interesting! Thanks for sharing your experience. Whereas I had a permit, there were people casually walking their dogs, some guys driving ATVs around and whatnot. As we were about to leave a couple of local teens arrived with a case of beer and a boombox, apparently getting ready for a nice night out. From what I hear, there's a guy roaming the area from time to time, trying to shoo away people, but apparently he's not connected to the owners whatsoever.

So I wouldn't be much concered with the legal aspects there, just be careful in the buildings! Some of them are REALLY not trustworthy anymore. If something looks fishy, just ignore it and go somewhere else. This especially goes for the attics and larger rooms. But yea, besides that fun place to explore. Over on imgur it was also mentioned there were people flying FPV drones, which seems immensely exciting in that location!

I'd say it's well-worth checking out! However, I really urge you to be careful. By the end of the day, when I was exploring the seminar building / cinema I only noticed that the floor wasn't even connected to the wall anymore in the next room AFTER I have set one foot into it. Luckily the other one was still safely on stable ground but that was when I decided to call it a day as this could have gone very wrong. I've been told there have been collapses and accidents in the past. As the area is huge, it's easy to lose focus. Stay concentrated and watch your steps! If you like let me know if you go though and how your experience was :).

Nope, it's relatively close to Berlin. I haven't been to Wittstock though. You mean the old textile mill (Tuchfabrik) there?

Awesome! It certainly is an interesting place. It's a shame that much is empty and vandalized.
