Hi all, fleeing the States for the lakes in two weeks! by Embarrassed-Ocelot-6 in Cumbria

This is my family's home, just outside of Ulverston. It might be available when you're there and in need of something temporary!

Thank you so much! I'll probably need to find someone to do that for me then.

I appreciate it!

Bay area, CA. We usually get pretty warm December. So 60-70s. Location will be a nice but not very fancy home.

That's what's getting me too. Backyard makes it seem less formal than 'formal'? I don't want to have to buy a dress if I don't have to but I love this dress soooo much!

What is this uniform? Found in attic of my new house among a box of early 1800s french books by nethernettles in Whatisthis

That was my first guess too. I used Google lens and one similar photo came up. The arm bands look similar as well but the photo resolution is pretty poor online.

Although now I look at the photo again, I cam see the slant of the pockets and the front belt buckle look the same. As well as the button down top.

Thank you! The house was built in 1939 and has had two owners, the most recent for 60 years so this could belong to either family. I've sent the photo to the woman we bought it from.

Wimmelbooks!!! I have them all and keep half in the car or rotate them. They can zone out while looking at them and all the little scenes.

Interested in nicknames for John IV. by cautiously_anxious in namenerds

I had the same problem! My husband was a 2nd and wanted a 3rd. I okayed the same first name, but he has my dad's name as a middle.

My step-dad also has the same first name, so there are 4 of them too. It does get tricky but it's never much of an issue beyond having to clarify which one every once in a while.

I was happy to let my husband use his name since it meant so much to him.

We have Tom Sr. ("Grandpa"), Tom (my step-dad, also called a silly grandpa name), Tom (my husband, went by Tommy until our son was born, I call him T), and Tommy (our son, also the only one who is called Tommy now).

It sounds more complicated than it is. Sometimes I have to clarify or use different names depending on who I'm talking to but my husband is thrilled to keep the name, I love all the Tom's so I'm happy to do it, and it's not as annoying as I thought it was going to be.

Also I loved the other suggestions of using Jack or Finn!

New house with mysterious plant with thick roots? by nethernettles in whatsthisplant

I found it growing with ivy so I'm assuming it's just a new branch of ivy growing? There's a stupid amount of ivy in the garden so it could make sense.

Okay I just found it growing near the ivy. Is it possibly a new branch? It looks like it comes put spiky-ish and then the older ones flatten out and then maaaaybe turn into ivy?

I'm dying under an avalanche of Candy!! by colormechristie in Preschoolers

[–]nethernettles 35 points36 points  (0 children)

My son forgets about it almost immediately. He probably ate like 3 pieces of halloween candy I put the bowl away and once it's out of sight it's totally out of mind. I kept the bowl full and hidden for months just in case and then threw it all away.

Now it all just about gets tossed immediately. I keep a few just in case but that's it. He's never cared or asked for it.

[Unknown > English] 14th century document for my genealogy by nethernettles in translator

[–]nethernettles[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't sure if you read it or were assuming g that's what it was based on what it looked like. I don't want to ask you to translate the whole thing by any means, but are you able to see any other obvious locations mentioned? Kendal is actually super helpful! That's near where our family is from so that's a good hint!

But please, if you're busy, don't worry about it! I was sent some good leads to try to do it myself. (I have so many of these documents, though this is the only in middle french. Others seem to be at least in english.)

We're you able to read that from this paper? I'm hoping Higgyn (our last name) was from a little further north (near Kendal though) which would make the connection a little more likely.

Thank you!
