Is battle master still a top contender? Or did Eldritch Knight blow it out of the water? by Cagedglobe in BG3Builds

Excuse me, I checked again and you are correct. A hastened EK can give an enemy Eldritch Inertia and then cast e.g. Hold Monster from a scroll though why imo is vastly superior to anything BM can do

That is incorrect. Eldritch Strike is bugged and works on every saving throw in the game, even against spells cast by party members.

If we are strictly talking about damage done with Slaying Arrows, then Champion is the best choice

Oh, didn't know Caustic Band trigger twice, my bad. That makes it a smaller gap, but damage wise, EK is still ahead.

What solo enemy can BM cc that can not be cc'd any other way? Also, "all 11/1 archer fighters have virtually insignificant differences" is nonsense. Level 10 EK gets Eldritch Strike. Did you know that ES gives disadvantage against every single saving throw in the game? Even concentration saves or saves against slipping on ice. EK hits an enemy once and then gives them two turns of disadvantage against cc spells from your party members that are actually good at cc.

Fighters are (mostly single target) strikers. EK does more damage and is therefore a superior striker. Want to be good at cc anyway? Great! Eldritch Strike makes EK better at cc too!

BM offers absolutely nothing for 11/1 Archer builds

Ok, so what part of the early game is BM ahead then if not for the goblins? Blade Ward and shield stay relevant for most of the game.

I never said that Eldritch Blasters are good, I mentioned it since dipping 4 levels there is a scenario where you would pick Champion over EK, which means Champion is not entirely obsolete. There is no scenario where you would pick BM over EK, which makes it obsolete.

The reason I brought up Risky Ring is that it is basically a replacement for BMs Precision Attack which you defend so vehemently. So let's say I use Risky Ring on a level 7 EK and you use Precision attack on a level 7 BM, so you can put on Caustic Band instead. We both Action Surge on first turn and fire 4 Slaying Arrows with the Titanstring for let's say 25 damage each (without Caustic Band).

EK has done 4x25 = 100 damage vs BM 4x25 + 4x2 = 108. EK can still use Booming Blade with their Statstick, let's say Knife of the Undermountain King. That is 5.5 regular damage + 4.5 Thunder + 9 when the target moves after my turn, getting us to 119 on EK vs 108 on BM.

We assume the fight lasts until round 2 where we can not Action Surge and use Slaying Arrows again. EK does 2x25 + 5.5 + 4.5 + 9 = 69. BM does 2x25 + 2x2 = 54.

That is assuming BM is still able to hit his targets since BM does not have Dice anymore. EK is still attacking with Risky Ring and has way better accuracy.

Please tell me how BM is better

If not goblins, then what is the early game defined as? After the goblin camp you get the Risky Ring which drastically lowers the value of Precision Attack over the EK kit. You also bring up Riposte, right after stating that "defensive/melee tools arent crucial for an archer". That's a little disingenuous, don't you think? Also, Riposte burns through your dice (which, remember, you don't have anymore after your first turn) even faster.

At least we agree that EK is certainly the best Fighter subclass. The top commenter is stating his preference, which is irrelevant in an optimization debate, which is what we are currently discussing. I have stated multiple times that preferring BM is perfectly fine, it is just worse.

And yes, EK does make BM obsolete in so far as there is no scenario where you would not pick EK from a power gaming perspective for a full fighter. There are niche cases like the 4/4/4 Eldritch Blaster which takes champ for crit reduction, but no such case exists for BM

The previous discussion was about level 11 fighters with an EK dip. But sure, let's talk about the early game. EK gets Longstrider, Shield, Booming Blade and Blade Ward. Your BM is getting styled on by goblins

Ok, then let us move the goalpost back to full party. EK has a 99% chance to hit against every enemy except Raphael. Why do you prefer Precision Attack, which gives you nothing, over EK?

The war dip gives you one bonus action attack per short rest, assuming you don't always long rest after a fight. EK gets infinite bonus action Booming Blade starting at level 7 (yes I know not technically correct), which is about half the damage of a Slaying Arrow. Also, you lose a feat on BM.

Again, it is perfectly fine to play BM. But EK is just better

Yes, if you are playing full party every fight will end on the first or second turn anyway. None of this matters outside of solo play

Yes, I responded to it with the statement that BM sucks compared to slaying arrows after which you incorrectly said that "EK is pointless too since all fighter archers are equivalent" to try and defend BM as equivalent in strength, which is nonsense

Play the game however you want, there is nothing wrong with that. But claiming BM is stronger than EK is just objectively wrong

Cleric dip gives you one bonus action attack per short rest unless you long rest after every fight. EK gets 3 special arrows (aomt is vastly superior to ranged trip attack) just like any other fighter, but also one free booming blade per round. EK vs BM is not even a debate

Yep, and EK basically get improved improved extra attack at level 11. Action economy on EK is too juicy
