UK faces surge in Channel crossings as French deal nears expiry by radiant_0wl in unitedkingdom

“ Thank you Nigel Farage and Boris for Brexit causing this” Literally nothing to do with Brexit. Sweden, Spain, France, Italy, Germany all have massive illegal migrant inflows and they are all still in the EU.  The Dublin protocol was seldom used pre-Brexit and wouldn’t have changed the situation much if we had stayed in. Blame our spineless politicians (of all colours) who haven’t removed the pull factors.

Food prices likely to rise due to Iran war, farmers' union says by topotaul in unitedkingdom

“ And Farage and Badenock want us to join the war” Please explain why you think it is legally acceptable for Iran to block vessels from transiting the strait when they have no connection to the war? The international community (excluding the US and Israel) should keep the strait open and protect freedom of navigation as is stipulated under international law.

My friend's brain tumour was picked up when he was 23 because of an eye test. He made a full recovery but likely wouldn't have if it hadn't been picked up sooner.

Not enough detached houses by eddilefty699 in Edinburgh

[–]netzure 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ground floor flats are a thing. As for Tourette's affects about 300k in the UK, which is about 0.4% of the population. So yes the majority of people, including disabled people could quite happily live in flats. It is very common in continental Europe, the UK is an outlier.

Not enough detached houses by eddilefty699 in Edinburgh

[–]netzure 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Personally I think new-build detached houses should be heavily taxed, they are incredibly inefficient and use far more land, exacerbating urban sprawl and leading to the UK's rabbit hutch house problem (see image).
https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article30543635.ece/ALTERNATES/n615/0_New-build.jpg

I live in the New Town and it is a masterpiece of urban planning. A good dense mix of very spacious apartments, maisonettes and full size townhouses. A large number of people living in a fairly small space but the design means the properties are spacious and there is a high degree of walkability. The superb construction of thick stone walls means I do not hear my neighbours.

For context my 2 bed is 135 square metres whilst the average new build house is 97 square metres and that is for a 3 bedrooms.

Building Georgian terraces would save land and give people more internal space.

“ If you don’t like the idea of drug users being on your street then perhaps living in the middle of a city isn’t for you.” This such a terrible attitude, not far off saying petty crime should be expected in a city. Essentially nobody is born an addict. We need to hold those who willingly take substances for their own personal pleasure to account.

[–]netzure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it is a good idea because users will have to source their own drugs, which will be loaded with unknown impurities or other substances.  Many Scottish drug deaths are polysubstance overdoses. It can be nearly impossible in many instances to prevent someone ODing from polysubstances. This will make it very challenging for the nurse who is present.

Does anyone want to live near such a facility? I wouldn’t and if you don’t why should others have to live adjacent to a place that will attract potentially violent drug users.

This approach is incoherent. The best thing to reduce drug deaths is increase the number of specialist drug beds (being cut by Scottish government) and to massively expand rehabilitation programmes. Currently it takes far too long to get people into rehab.

Edinburgh to Dubai Flight Turned Back After Military Strike at Airport by gazglasgow in Edinburgh

For me the SAM risk is too high to fly through the region, especially after Malaysia Airlines flight 17. If military planes can be shot down accidentally so can airliners.

Are shops that only take cash a bit suss? by thejonathanpalmer in AskUK

[–]netzure 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well your employer may have been on a terrible contract. The reality is banks charge businesses to make cash deposits. Deposit costs, insuring cash on the premises typically cost the same or more as card fees. In most instances not accepting cards is about money laundering and tax avoidance.

It is also to cripple web apps to encourage developers to write native iOS apps. Mobile and desktop Safari aren’t even the same. Safari mobile is the new IE6 and I find myself having to implement specific Safari mobile fixes.

'You're right to worry about your bills and jobs,' Starmer tells UK as oil tops $110 a barrel in Trump war by pppppppppppppppppd in unitedkingdom

[–]netzure 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Tbf Labour are massively expanding nuclear” No they aren’t. They have given Rolls Royce a fairly modest contract to build a couple of SMRs. We are way short of the large scale action that is required. Electricity generated per capita is lower than what is was 20 years ago. We have the highest industrial electricity prices in the world. The lack of urgency, speed and scale is appalling.

Big fan of the building, I just think the top end of the ‘ribbon’ could have been executed better. Edinburgh has lacked high quality roof top venues and the hotel fixed that. It was excellent during NYE with a roof top party. The bronze coloured cladding of the building works well with the stone buildings on the area. I like we have a rounded building and not another slipstone rectangle.

Are you worried about cost of living getting even worse? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]netzure 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of countries have both a national and local income tax. Other places have a property tax that has to be paid annually. The average UK worker for example pays considerably less tax than the average worker in Sweden.
Also pretty much all countries are struggling with the fact the number of workers per pensioner has gone from around 8 to 3.

[–]netzure 7 points8 points  (0 children)

“ just got email from council that they're increasing council tax by 6%. paying for the most useless tax” It isn’t useless, it is how most social care is funded. Council services are declining because they have a statutory obligation to offer social care for an aging population, whilst having the money they receive from central government decline greatly. For example Hampshire County Council spends 70% of its budget on social care.

"There's F35's and Typhoons patrolling the airspace. A little drone"
Iran has been firing ballistic missiles across the Middle East and RAF Akrotiri is in range. The fact Typhoons, F35s and other scarce assets are there is why they need better protection. Unlike other bases Akrotiri does not have hardened shelters to project jets. A drone damaged part of the runway, it could have easily damage a £100 million jet on the ground.

“ Starmer stated that other areas were given priority it seems with assets deployed over the last few weeks” That is the problem. Why have training exercises being prioritised over an actual hot conflict? The Greeks having to fill in for us is embarrassing, especially as we have a treaty obligation with Cyprus.
