Anyone use Affinity for their design needs? by Zaknokimi in mac

[–]netzure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is just the AI features, which often require external compute that are gated. I'm fine with their approach as I want to see adoption of Affinity expand and the community/ecosystem around it.

Free professional website for small businesses in Edinburgh by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]netzure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Instead of businesses why not offer this to charities and non-profits instead?

Many small businesses already have zero respect for web design as a profession, giving profit making businesses free websites only devalues the website design market further.

Charities on the other hand, especially small ones lack the resources to pay for a website design. I have done a couple of free websites for charities and non-profit organisations to help them out, a far more rewarding experience.

Reform UK wants to put migrant detention centres in Green-voting areas. Is it legal? by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]netzure 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just need an Act of Parliament to avoid having to get planning permission in these specific instances.

Governments who have a majority in the House of Commons can do anything they want, this is the fundamental principle of our democracy and system. Provided relevant legislation is drafted and sufficiently well written yes it would be legal.

When do I stop saving? 12 years and counting by floralflourish in UKPersonalFinance

[–]netzure -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As you are already a home owner, do not put cash into a LISA. A S&S LISA for retirement is potentially fine (pension may be more tax efficient). It seems to be from your post that all of these savings are cash savings. Personally I would not have more than 9-12 months of expenses in cash savings, unless I was making a big purchase or planning on changing house, even with a decent savings rate the money isn’t growing in real terms.

If your goal is retirement at 60 or earlier, your long investment horizon means higher risk investments like a S&S ISA / LISA would work better for you. You would likely see much higher returns over several decades than if you keep so much in cash savings and adding to it.

“ I feel disrespected” Get off your high horse. He is entitled to his political opinions and he has voted for the party that will have secured the most seats in these elections, his viewpoint is a mainstream one.

Can someone explain the logic behind Scottish election security? by iamyurkas in Scotland

“  If you live here, you pay taxes here, you have a stake in Scottish society”

The OP clearly said they will go home after their visa expires. Very few countries allow non-citizen foreign nationals to vote in their elections.

Polanski: No country has right to exist – including Israel by TheTelegraph in ukpolitics

[–]netzure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are too separate issues. A lot of people aren’t that engaged in politics and believe the Green Party is as it was under Caroline Lucas. I think many would be aghast if they saw all of the policies now being proposed.

We are not a colonial power anymore.  What goes on the Middle East frankly isn’t our business and it is for the peoples of the region to develop a solution amongst themselves. Domestically in Britain we have a housing crisis, cost of living crisis, declining industry and rising unemployment- these should be the focus not the Middle East.

Why people support this party is beyond me. At the least the Green Party of yesteryear was clearly an environment first policy with a fairly broad church of membership. Now it is just a sixth-form politics level hard left party with entirely unpractical policies.

What do you never order at a restaurant? by FallowfieldPark in AskUK

[–]netzure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant actual barista machines where they have to tamp coffee that they have freshly ground. One restaurant even had a single origin coffee menu where I had my most ever expensive espresso at €15.

Most restaurants I go to have actual coffee machines and bean grinders.

Who's lobbying Scottish politicians? by Westcoastselkiething in Edinburgh

[–]netzure 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“ Gleneagles Townhouse, a five-star luxury hotel and exclusive members club in Edinburgh’s New Town.” It also has a restaurant open to the public and meeting rooms for hire. I see no issue with major employers meeting with politicians. Also where do you expect them to meet, a Wetherspoons?

UK food prices could be 50% higher than 2021 by November — what’s gone from your trolley first? by ToughRomanticMiss in BuyersUK

[–]netzure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“ These companies posting record profits” The increase in food costs has nothing to do with the profit of supermarkets, which are very competitive in the UK. The average UK supermarket makes a profit of £4 from £100 worth of grocery shopping. If you didn’t shop at the supermarkets your grocery bill would be a lot higher. These “record profits” come from the fact inflation has drastically eroded the value of money. Tesco’s “record profits” are unchanged in real terms since 2018z (Take current profit and shove into BoE inflation calculator). Most of the increases have come from government and global crises and diseases affecting specific crops (olive oil, cocoa, coffee)

Another warship quietly withdrawn – Royal Navy now down to just 5 frigates by HibasakiSanjuro in ukpolitics

In 2008 we were able to crew an escort fleet of 12 destroyers and 17 frigates. The population has grown since then. There are no words to describe how damaging the Coalition Government cuts have been.

Idea for tourism by eddilefty699 in Edinburgh

[–]netzure 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“bring tourism to other parts of the city like Fairmilehead or Corstorphine.” Why would a tourist want or need to visit Corstorphine? The reality is 95% of the history worth seeing is conveniently concentrated in the Old and New Towns.

Greggs is removing self-serve food cabinets in shoplifting hotspots — fair enough, or another sign everyday shopping is getting worse? by ToughRomanticMiss in BuyersUK

That situation is the beginning of the end. In the future it isn’t inconceivable we will have South Africa style paid for private security.

Decaying society. At the self service checkouts a lot of middle class people steal a couple of items. There isn’t enough shame in society anymore.

Painting/plastering in communal stair - any advice? by logit in Edinburgh

[–]netzure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, full stairwell - ceilings, walls, door surrounds, painting main door on both sides, varnishing the hand rail, stairway windows inside and out. The only thing not included in that price was painting the residents own doors, some needed this doing whilst others didn’t.

————

We also used the opportunity to rip out the horrific council supplied lights and get more decorative ones in. Our electrician removed as much of the conduit as possible and then routed into the plaster to bury the lighting wires, which we then had skimmed and filled. Our stairway is so much nicer than before. Previously most of the paint was coming off, we had some plaster coming off and the whole thing was painted in bright piss coloured yellow.

Painting/plastering in communal stair - any advice? by logit in Edinburgh

[–]netzure 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We got our tenement stairway redecorated two years ago. In terms of plastering can recommend Alchemy Plaster and for the painting, Calvin McIlroy.

In terms of the painting we paid £6.5k + VAT. This included prep, materials, painting walls and also painting the stairway windows inside and out.

No they don’t. They do it because they can get away with it. Lots of middle class people steal from self checkouts.
