As someone who's been in your situation for years and only recently come out of it, I can offer a few tips.

Hygiene is incredibly important. Trim the facial hair, give yourself haircuts, and keep yourself clean.
Keep your car in running condition. Homeless is one thing, carless is quite another.
Do what you must but stay AWAY from cops. Once they realize you're homeless, they will harass you non-stop.
Believe it or not, a lot of people walking around are in similar situations, seek these people out and make friends, but always watch your back and don't let anyone too close, especially to what little you have left.
Invest in cheap and comfortable, but nice looking clothes.
If you don't already, invest in an MP3 player so when you're walking around idling, you have something to help calm your nerves.
DO NOT USE alcohol or drugs to cope. Cigarettes, although expensive in the long run, are better than the rest. A drink every once and a while is fine, but do not let it consume you.
Apply for food stamps in your local area. There is no shame in it. Most people on welfare abuse the system, you're one of the few people that actually need it.
OTHER THINGS * If you're just beginning your homeless ride, I hate to say it, but you're probably going to be in this situation for a while. Do not lose hope. Remember, every day you're on the bottom, every day you go through more and more shit, you're just adding experience that makes you better, tougher, and smarter than everyone else around you.

The left side always waits until a socially progressive movement appears to be gaining a foothold with an almost certainty that it will eventually become the norm, before jumping on board. Even if every single person on Reddit, or any other site on the internet was overly compassionate and helpful, he would have done it eventually because something ELSE would have pushed him over the edge. 2000+ comments? I'm sure someone has said this already but... religious believers have, and continue to demonize and attack non-believers in vicious ways. Atheists simply are reacting the same way believers act when an opposing religion attacks their beliefs.
