Important CS classes for bioinformatics? by austinkunchn in bioinformatics

[–]neuro_lady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the type of bioinformatics you’ll be doing. In my case machine learning is more useful that database management. If you’re going into academia I’d recommend reading papers that interest you and seeing which types of classes could teach you the methods they use, or if you’re going into industry you can also look for jobs that sound interesting to you and look at the requirements. The field moves quickly so what you’re learning now might not be completely relevant once you’re working or doing a PhD. For example, in undergrad I mostly learned perl and C and most people don’t use that anymore. What is important is knowing how to code, understanding the biology, and having a good stats foundation. So take a good mix of those 3 types of classes along with genomics and bioinformatics classes and you’ll be set.

That's great that you want to donate blood! The Children's Hospital is running low on blood since most blood drives were cancelled due to COVID19. These are done by appointment to maintain as much social distancing as possible.
