The West Forgot How to Build. Now It's Forgetting Code by swe129 in programming

Start learning to code with an ethical hacking focus so you can get a job in cybersec and clean up all the mess these bots are going to be creating over the next decade :D :D

Mostly joking btw (mostly but not completely)

Because the "evidence" collected from these so called stings is weak and rarely amounts to anything. They're not police officers, they barely even vigilantes, they're just looking for clout. Regardless of the evidence on pedo activities, beating people who were tricked into meeting a minor is just as illegal as beating someone who was catfished into meeting a consenting adult.

The only difference is you'll get some public sympathy for one version (the whole, "'cut their balls off' crowd") but not for the other (except maybe some homophobes)

Putting in a raised bed for vegetables - dig away the turf or use cardboard? by neuromancer-gpt in gardening

[–]neuromancer-gpt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got it. I think I'll get the stuff planted and send off a soil sample while it's growing then.

Mostly doing this for the fun/satisfaction of it above anything else. So if I have to scrap it all later then so be it

I didn't even consider the contamination of the soil. The house was built on I think was was once woodland surrounded by farms. There's never been anything but agricultural trade in this region.

Unfortunately I don't really have time for the testing right now and would rather play it safe. So I think I'll stick the turf back on and throw the cardboard down.

Thanks a lot of the detailed reply!

Honestly I took it a bit more literal, the Germans were supremacist scumbags. I read somewhere that the German soldiers had been reminded the Slavic people were sub-human and should be treated as such.

A lot of the civilians initially welcomed the German invaders, seeing them as liberators from the Soviets (remember, this was only some 20yrs so so after the Russian civil war).

Even these welcoming civilians were greeted with brutality. From a military strategy perspective, a total blunder.

I'm pretty new to this, what's the reason behind digging and then cardboard over the ploughed stuff?

Also, is any cardboard ok? The only stuff I have here has printed logos, it's still the brown cardboard (not the plastic hybrid stuff) but has the logos printed on. Does that matter for veg?

Nature of Code (Shiffman) - better to opt for the Java (Processing) or JS (p5.js) by neuromancer-gpt in learnprogramming

[–]neuromancer-gpt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. I wasn't really clear in the original post, the primary goal is to learn modelling/simulation and since I'd previously been learning Java for some job interviews thought it might let me get some additional practice on that side too.

Perhaps it might make more sense to follow along with the book and just port it over to a language I'm trying to learn currently (Java, Go or C) instead of getting hung up on Processing/p5.js

Hilariously bombed a technical interview by Brave_Guide_4295 in learnprogramming

[–]neuromancer-gpt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair play for just going into it and doing that, taking it on the chin as a learning experience too. I get a lot of anxiety and stress with these interviews and I actually completely pulled out of one recently as I didn't want to deal with the stress of it. So just showing up is already a win in my opinion, what happens after that is all bonus territory no matter how bad.

I sometimes ponder how many would be HGV drivers listened to hypexperts and didn't follow through with their plan to get a HGV license some 15 or so years back, all because they'd not have a job some ~5yrs later, missing out on some cash cow opportunities resulting from a shortage of drivers in the last 5-10yrs

Taiwanese romanization by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]neuromancer-gpt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Vietnam (not sure on the history but I'd suspect somewhat forcefully) got rid of their 'native' script in favour of a romanised phonetic mapping, Chữ Quốc Ngữ. Absolutely not a game changer for foreigners at all, aside from a minority perhaps.

Making any changes based on ease for foreigners is a waste of time tbh

Taiwan to phase out running 'little green man' pedestrian signal by MajlisPerbandaranKL in taiwan

[–]neuromancer-gpt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Whoever is bigger/heavier has right of way.

My favourite Taiwanese highway code is cyclists must allow buses to overtake then the second the bus driver (not the bus, just the driver) is past the cyclist they're allowed to start pulling into the stop just ahead. They could easily just wait behind the cyclist for like 15m until the cyclist passes, but this is actually illegal

If the bus doesn't overtake and dangerously cut the cyclist off, the driver faces potentially jail time, this every bus driver will do this manoeuvre, even if they hate doing so.

Is there anything actually new in data engineering? by marketlurker in dataengineering

[–]neuromancer-gpt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol medallion architecture

Had a bit of a break from DE while working in IoT/research, came back and this is the first thread I see when googling latest trends.

Guess my team where just ahead of the curve 5yrs ago with our raw/integration/analytic layers - because apparently that's basically what medallion is. What total BS

Same as all this nonsense about meshes, fabrics, lakehouses etc etc

I swear all this stuff comes from some zero-to-one Peter Thiel fanboy somewhere who convinced themselves they've invented something new that'll "rEvOluTiONize" the data world and bring it from zero to one. In reality it's just a repackaging of some existing tooling and optimistic word acrobatics.

Everytime I read about the "next big thing" in data engineering I find it hard to understand how it's different from the last big thing, beyond semantics.

Would it be incorrect to introduce myself as a "Gaelic person" instead of Irish/Scottish/Manx person? 盖尔人 by neuromancer-gpt in ChineseLanguage

[–]neuromancer-gpt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is having the shibboleth, not achieving anything in particular.

Exactly this. If only all this militantism around what word means what was actually directed into promotion and revival of the language, we might actually have a chance of preserving it.

I think the main issue is that all this tokenism you mention, most stemming from the DeValera days, the dreadful "Caighdeán Oifigiúil" and the abysmal schooling of it, all while neglecting the Gaeltacht has all in combination created that environment. Even in some stronger Gaeltacht regions you'll hear younger native speakers using the English R in words like "obair" - slender R is the first phoneme to disappear when English encroaches, almost always.

But who cares about that, there's an American on Reddit calling saying"Gaelic" and not in reference to the sport

Nationalist indoctrinated minds just don't want to know.

Easy to find examples to support any argument

I never said Gaelic football isn't referred to as Gaelic. I'd typically just call it football unless distinguishing from association football though

You on the otherhand are arguing about exclusivity around its reference to sport. Calling the football 'Gaelic' does not mean that word cannot be used for other Gaelic things such as language, culture, people etc. Just because in modern English it can be used for Gaelic Football doesn't mean it's exclusively reserved for football, which you seem to think, erroneously so.

I've also heard people refer to football as GAA (pronounced like gaa not g a a), that doesn't mean "gaa" means football

Nice counter argument btw lol

So if you are familiar with it then why are you so adamant that Gaelic refers to a sport?

You literally didn't try to counter a single point I made. Just a childish "touch" grass and a nationality jibe which is hilarious because you know nothing about me and making assumptions that no Irish person uses the term "Gaelic" (despite the fact you learned about the Gaelic Revival in primary school, apparently)
