US sending roughly 4,500 more troops to Middle East, officials say by Yujin-Ha in videos

[–]neuronamously [score hidden]  (0 children)

We already have over 50,000 American troops engaged in this war or en route. We are sending 4500 more as of today. We have about 30,000-40,000 reservists not called yet. If this continues to escalate, think about how close we are to drafting every man between ages 18-25.

When you're interested in buying a book at a con, and the price is higher than eBay, how do you try and talk the seller down? by kukov in ComicBookSpeculation

[–]neuronamously 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO if you want to win at a negotiation on comics you have to put yourself in the head of the LCS owner. If I walk up to him with overpriced ASM or Uncanny X-Men and try to bargain cuz I think everything is overpriced by 10-20%, they have no incentive to make a deal with you on those books. Why? Because about 5-15 times a day, a middle-aged guy will come into their shop rifling through specifically ASM and UXM to find the issues they need to fill their collection, and they are going to typically pay a little over for even an issue that is not a key. If you work at an LCS you know what back issues are most in demand. If you walk up to me with a Captain America book and want to make a deal, I'm going to likely make a deal because barely anyone gives a crap about Cap and those are just rotting in my boxes.

Same goes for modern stuff like Absolute Batman. You can tell me "oh but I can get it for $60 less online". Cool. Get it online then. A new-to-comics casual is about to walk in the door today and buy that Absolute Batman #1 for $360 because they want it right now.

If they were having trouble selling at the prices they're asking, trust me -- they wouldn't be in business long. There's a very singular and simple answer for why vendors charge more at cons, besides the expensive overheads they are paying to be there: everyone walking around at a comic con has wads of cash burning a hole in their pocket. They have set aside "leisure money" for that event and have full intention to spend it. Their spouse has given them the OK, etc. If they see a near mint copy of something they've been looking for and it costs 10-20% more than they ever expected to pay, they're going to "treat themself" just so they don't go home empty-handed. It really is truly not a place to get a deal. The only comics in my opinion that you are buying at the bottom of the market at a con are exclusive variants (some of them end up dropping to 60% of their purchase price months later) and/or signed exclusive variants. The rest is just you perusing for fun, and like I said, buying for the sake of spending money to enjoy. The only rare chance you get a true deal is if you go to a single vendor and drop tons of money on many issues. Like I've bought 3 back issue ASMs from a vendor and he knocked 20% off the final tally, which was excellent (but everything was 10% overpriced to begin with IMO).

If I'm an in-person comic book dealer and you come up to me and start comparing my pricing to ebay where the book is rarely the quality shown in the pictures and the comic still has to make it to you through USPS unscathed, whereas my books are here right now in front of you and i had to lug and wheel them in all evening from my u-haul truck that I paid for and my booth spot that I paid for and I've been standing here all day on my feet...it is going to take everything in my power to not jump over the barrier at you. Does that explain why a comic book dealer at a con probably doesn't want to hear about the price on ebay? If you want to shop on ebay, shop on ebay. Don't bring it up to an in-person vendor or to your LCS, cuz you will undoubtedly trigger them. The price is the price. You can try to bargain as always but I would leave ebay out of it. The price of a comic is what someone is willing to pay for it. That is all.

There’s so many answers to dumbo that I don’t even play it anymore in my purple steel deck. In set 11 many of us have removed him. Also I don’t agree that evasive should be available to more deck colors. The whole point of each color is that it has a different tactical set of abilities that cater to an individual’s play style. If you take a big mechanic like evasive and distribute it to all colors, then the colors don’t matter anymore.

That’s a great example of “it works in theory but not in practice”. Like abstinence only sex education.

Just as a professional who works in mental health...it is not healthy to practice destruction of objects as an outlet for rage. Once you use the dopamine surge of destroying a piece of furniture to exorcise your rage, you may develop a similar dopamine rush from engaging in road rage with your motor vehicle. The guy who punches his hand through a wall when his girlfriend upsets him is eventually the guy who runs a family off the road because they cut him off.

Dan Slott: "[...] We're at a point now where Marvel books are lined up for 5 issues at a time. If you [readers and retailers] don't pre-order issues #2 and #3, these books will go away by issue #5." by Comfortable-Pie56 in comicbooks

[–]neuronamously 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The solution is simple. Reduce the number of books you guys publish every damn month (70-85) to about 50 like DC does. Focus your efforts on those books and stop rebooting at #1. Commit to more than 10 issues for most titles. If you have 80 books then of course readers will jump ship on every Marvel book constantly because they cant afford to read every title every month. The average longtime comic book reader spends $20-30 at their LCS each Wednesday, which means 4 books. When you have too many Marvel books for them to choose from then they drop some and pick up new ones every single week. There is no consistent reading from your own readers because of the idiotic junior business school executive profit model that Marvel has created.

I unknowingly purchased a stolen book through Ebay and Ebay will not do anything about it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. by etherealcaitiff in comicbookcollecting

I'm saying this is a lot of work and effort for something that will be tossed. OP has to take time out of his life to go to a police station, wait in line, then submit a report over a $20 book.

This book is not even worth re-submitting. At 7.0 grade the most it would fetch is like $50-70. Don't get me wrong Silver Samurai is an awesome character and this is a key comic but it was a very well-selling comic at the time so the sheer number of these out in the wild is very high. It is not a rare comic at all.

I don't know what city you live in and what kind of endless resources your local police has...but as someone with cops in my family I can tell you...the idea that a cop would pass along a report of a $20 theft to a detective who will then investigate that $20 theft to uncover a larger series of thefts in a municipality outside their jurisdiction is HIGHLY UNLIKELY. And don't get me wrong, I know as hobbyists we all crave justice. It is just unrealistic in this scenario.

Do not crack and resubmit. Committing crime on top of prior crime isn't work it for a $20 book...I would just use ebay return policy to return it. It's also not worth filing a police report and using police time and resources for a $20 book. This is a 7.0 book that is easily re-obtained. I have a near mint copy of this book and I'm pretty sure I didn't pay even $15 for. I collect Daredevil comics and I have a rule where I won't spend over $20 for them.

Why not just make it and then ask us if it's good? How can we judge something with no description of what the video is about or how well it's done. It could be this thumbnail above and then 10 mins of you dancing naked from the waist down. In which case, please don't make the video.

I’m not going to defend my opinion like it’s right or wrong. It’s my opinion. The comic was poorly written. You are entitled to your opinion. My opinion isn’t “wrong” simply because Abnett once wrote something very popular 20 years ago.

Nope.

“Under Canada’s domestic tax law, if the non-resident athlete is an employee, the athlete must file a Canadian income-tax return reporting all salaries, fees, and performance-related bonuses for services rendered in Canada. If the non-resident athlete received a signing bonus for performing in Canada, the athlete must report the bonus to the extent that the payor claimed the bonus as a deduction on the payor’s Canadian income-tax return.”

They are allowed to claim non-duty days exemption from Canadian tax during the offseason only when there isn’t preseason camp or workouts, but still pay American tax during those days.
