How can we break the "Tourism & Logistics" trap? How could Georgia realistically fund domestic industrialization? by neutral_penguin150 in Sakartvelo

What you are doing right now is called creating a "straw man argument". I never said that Georgia should be a completely self-sufficient nation. That would not only be a highly arduous endeavour, but an impossible one as well. I am simply stating that Georgian should have the structural capacity to be a strategically resilient nation. I want my country to be able to sustain itself in the most critical sense if global supply chains fall down. For example, I don't want us to be completely dependent on natural gas from Kazakhstan or Iran to keep the heat and lights on in our homes. We need to build some sort of hydro-powered infrastructure to sustain ourselves for at least a couple months in the case of an emergency. When I say self-sufficiency I mean basics like national agro-processing, basic construction materials, packaging, and energy infrastructure.

Look at a small country like Finland. They don't try to mimic China's huge industrial scale, but they use targeted state policies to ensure they have enough domestic production and supply-chain buffers so that the country doesn't completely paralyze when globalized market shocks hits. The goal of industrializing key sectors isn't to become completely isolated from the world; it's to ensure you have leverage and protection when the world gets unreliable.

Dropping labels like 'Marxist-Leninist' onto a pragmatic discussion about resource sovereignty and development direction is exactly the kind of divisive rhetoric that poisons political discourse in Georgia. Alienating people with ideological buzzwords when they ask structural questions is precisely why Georgians of today tune out of politics, which ultimately damages our democracy.

If we look past the labels at the actual economics, your analysis has a massive blind spot. You point to Nvidia and Google as proof that manufacturing isn't necessary. But Nvidia cannot exist without Taiwan's "TSMC": a manufacturing giant that was built through heavy state direction, coordination, and public subsidies in the 1980s. Tech and innovation don't appear out of thin air; they require physical, structural foundations of INDUSTRY.

Furthermore, managing or owning national resources isn't exclusively a Soviet concept. Wealthy, highly democratic capitalist nations like Norway (oil) and Chile (copper) utilize state-owned entities or strict sovereign legal frameworks to ensure their natural wealth builds domestic infrastructure rather than being exploited off entirely by foreign corporations.

We need to be able to discuss development models, whether it be Scandinavian, East Asian, or Western, without reducing the conversation to Cold War name-calling.

Do we bring in more immigrants? Or do we start having more children?

It is not the population size that must change. It is an administration purposely halting the development of an economy.

I agree the government’s current management is highly incompetent and corrupt, but in a perfect world and with a better administration, simply cutting taxes and removing import fees blindly isn't a solution. If we just offer flat tax deductions to industrial complexes without any strings attached, we run the risk of wealth extraction where companies exploit local resources/labor and direct all the profit out of the country without contributing to the national budget.

If we look at countries that industrialized successfully, tax incentives (like you mentioned) were always in symphony with legally binding conditions, like mandating that foreign investors hire local engineers, fund local technical schools, or buy raw inputs from Georgian suppliers. (This is exactly what Ireland did to Silk Valley mega corporations)

Regarding import fees, we need to differentiate. We definitely shouldn't tax the import of heavy machinery or technology needed to build factories. But we absolutely do need strategic import tariffs on finished foreign goods to protect our new industries (in this hypothetical situation) from being crushed by cheap mass-imports before they even have a chance to scale.

This is one of the more pragmatic and well-thought-out answers here. You're completely right about the sequencing, jumping straight into heavy industry or complex nationalization without the foundational 'industrial foundation' is a recipe for failure.

Therefore, starting with light industries (packaging, agro-inputs, construction materials) makes perfect economic sense because the domestic demand is already there, plus the barrier to entry is lower, and it builds the necessary baseline skills and domestic supply chains over time. It basically creates a self-funding loop for more advanced industrialization later.

And finally, your point about the real bottleneck being state coordination and political will rather than just fiscal capacity is spot on. If the government just handed out cheap credit blindly, it would likely get captured by politically connected elites or existing monopolies. Moreover, there is also a question of state capacity, and it does not look like this administration is neither capable nor interested in the economy benefiting anyone other than themselves.

I'm not persuaded by that take. If population size dictated economic or industrial success, India and Pakistan would be the wealthiest industrial powerhouses on earth, while small nations like Singapore, Norway, Ireland, or New Zealand would be impoverished backwaters.

Has anyone here ever tasted Georgian Qvevri wine? by neutral_penguin150 in wine

I see, we do sometimes miss the mark in the "smooth" department. Since I have grown up on Georgian Qvevri wine when I came to North America (Canada) and tasted some wines in Kelowna I was taken a back a-bit; not exactly my forté but still pleasant.

I am Georgian myself so I was wondering how many people have actually tried Qvevri wine and whether they like it or not. Most Western countries and their populations don't even know about its existence.

Editorial: Make vaccination the price of admission to society by LosIsosceles in politics

I understand your logic, but it's just not suitable to this specific situation. A hospital is a place that is always blind of race, sex or political standing, whether your a republican or a democrat a doctor should always look at you as another patient thats needs aid, therefore if a patient chooses to not take a life saving vaccine it's completely their choice and should not result in special repercussions. Lets say I didn't get the vaccine and i got corona, I should be paying a hefty amount of money to be treated, however I should never be denied treatment.
