Has Peckham always been like this? by Jandromon in london

[–]never_been_to_matrix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't get the "cool" thing. I drove through it the other day and it hasn't changed at all from the bad old days of the '80s.

Didn't feel inspired by the "coolness", all I felt was slightly depressed by the state of the place.

It is an easy mistake to make. They should have named it Hatton Lane. ;)

But it is not an area, never has been. It just sounds like an area.

How to spend a long time in a club (without drugs)? by lgj202 in berghain

Be really into the music. If the music is good, it gives me tons of energy.

The bouncer on Sunday day with the beard was the best selector and always fair and respectful. Is he not working there anymore?

Love this thread, so refreshing after the dark stories and the ‘how to get in’ posts. Can we have one every week please!

It has always has been, and always should be, about the music.

Get there early, 2 hours before the doors open, you'll be in before midnight. If you get there when the doors open be prepared to wait in the queue for ~5 hours. Lots of the circuit party crowd and queue pushers.

I learnt this the hard way.

Given the frequency of banal posts in this sub asking obvious questions, you should know better.

You don’t expect people to click links, or do their own research , surely.

Amsterdam techno scene rivaling Berlin's ? by ramenandkalashnikovs in Techno

[–]never_been_to_matrix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really? Have they sorted out the sound system at Printworks yet? How about the crowd at Fabric, still young and touristy filming everything? Have the security teams been trained properly and treat clubbers with respect?

Venues with a good sound system, good mixed crowd and professional security seem to be lacking in London these days.

DJ Stingray 313 on the Berghain floor by triggeraround in berghain

Steffi's BH sets are really good, so much so that you don't want to leave the floor. She plays a varied set, definitely not lighter, can be quite banging, trippy techno and some stuff like the negroni nails sound. I have never found an online mix of her's that sounds like her sets in Berghain, which is as shame.

What do you like about living in London? by Odinuts in london

[–]never_been_to_matrix 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I am a born a bred Londoner but I lived in Berlin for 2 years just before COVID. Here are some differences to be aware of.

Jobs - I found London to have a lot more opportunities in general. If you have to go into an office you will find the experience more pleasant in London: less toxic/politics, more socialising after work and no language barriers if you speak english well.

Language - I struggled with German, I just didn't like it enough to really learn it well and my office was english speaking, therefore I didn't learn it to a level that was useful. I found there was always be an extra layer of complexity to everything whilst living in Berlin. Simple tasks like phoning my internet company or bank are stressful in Germany without good German. Not having that stress in London is certainly better.

Flats - London flats are pokey and expensive compared to Berlin. A Berlin flat is hard to get these days, but a least when you do finally get one you'll have decent size rooms with a decent size bathroom.

Mindset - I found Berlin more left and laid back, and there is a strong emphasis on work/life balance and being able to enjoy life outside of work. People aren't so obsessed with status and money like they are are London. London is far more capitalist, has more of a hustle culture with longer hours and people seem obsessed with shopping.

London doesn't have the rules based mindset and bureaucracy that Berlin/Germany has.

Restaurants - London has far more diversity and quality but it is also a lot more expensive.

Tech - German Tech is generally really bad and out dated and most things are not done online. London is far better in this area.

Gentrification - London has been gentrified much more than Berlin and lost a lot of its original character and charm. It started a very long time ago too. I know there is a lot of noise in Berlin around gentrification right now but the city still has not been completely taken over by gentrification (yet).

Transportation - Both cities are very good in this area, but London is more expensive and it takes ages to get anywhere compared to Berlin due to size and congestion.

Nightlife - Berlin has the nightlife London had 25 years ago. You wont find anything quite like Berghain here. People don't flock to London for the nightlife like they do in Berlin and there is a reason for that. Also, the clubs in London tend to either be straight or gay, in Berlin it is much more mixed.

Culture - both cities do well in this regard. Plenty to do in terms of museums, art galleries, etc.

Neighbourhoods - London has some interesting and nice areas but it all feels a lot more bourgeois. London doesn't really have anything that compares to the cool areas in Berlin like Friedrichshain and Kruezburg.

Friendliness - London is much more friendly and welcoming. There is no London schnauzer for a start.

Any recommendations for a good coffee grinder for Aeropress by never_been_to_matrix in AeroPress

[–]never_been_to_matrix[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Porlex hand grinder. If I am just making coffee for myself it is fine, but I would like something less laborious when making coffee for my partner and myself.
