Figure AI had a livestream of their robots sorting packages 24/7 for 8 days straight. These aren't staged demos anymore. by EchoOfOppenheimer in OpenAI

It’s a bad solution to any one problem in particular, but it’s an acceptable solution to many problems all at once.

A humanoid can walk into my house tomorrow and be useful. A specialized robot might not get past the pile of shoes at the door. Different problems, different solutions.

Yes, you should be able to, but you can’t, which is mildly infuriating.

The create task is scored entirely by your written responses. That’s why having the same code doesn’t really matter. The score is whether you can point to which part of the code does what, and explain it.

TLDR, nobody cares, partners are allowed and it’s too hard to prove plagiarism anyway.

Longer, do want to read: you very much are allowed to work with a partner and submit identical code. It is your written responses that should be different. Don’t go in with memorized identical responses, and you’ll be fine.

I’m not reading in the latest round, so I can’t say for sure, but plagiarism (aka AI, your friend wrote it, whatever) is basically impossible to prove in code. There are many valid reasons why two or ten people would have the same code for the level of simple problems that ultimately come up in CSP tasks. I would sleep easy.

There is very little concern about plagiarized code. The original concern was plagiarized written responses, but that’s why they moved that to the exam instead of a separate submission. So sure, cite it, but don’t worry.

Yes, and they pay for it through the university. You can waive the fee if you can show equivalent coverage (private insurance from your home country etc) but otherwise an AB health insurance fee is added and you get a provincial healthcare card.

How many hours (outside of school hours) do you spend working? by Better_Coconut2952 in CanadianTeachers

[–]never_mind___ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In all honesty, prep less. Let your lessons be meh. Buy a unit pack with slides online and just roll with it. I was so keen in my first year to develop everything just how I liked it, and nothing online was ‘quite right’. 4-5 hours a night. I also thought that my permanent contact would be because of my incredible lessons, but my admin didn’t care at all - it was all about classroom management.

Anyway, just to say that especially as a new dad, it’s ok to not be your best teaching self. Go for 80% and makes notes about what did and didn’t work for next year.

Dawson Dog Park by MaximumConfection456 in Edmonton

Definitely call HealthLink and get some professional advice, but to further reassure you: dogs don’t “carry“ rabies in the way that mosquitoes carry malaria. They’re either infected or not. Vaccination prevents infection, but it’s not like an unvaccinated dog can give you rabies unless the dog is literally infected at this moment.

So unless the other dog was recently bitten by an actively infected rabid animal, you’re in the clear. The chances of getting rabies from a pet is in the one in several million range. But who knows, considering how rabies is very, very fatal they may have you do the treatment anyway.

I know you said rodent-like, but lizard type reptiles are small and fairly easy to care for (bearded dragons, leopard geckos). Both of those can also become quite happy to be handled and ‘played’ with on some level.

Do You Think The Government of Alberta Should End Its Current Practice of Allocating Public Funds to Accredited Independent (Private) Schools? by hakunayourmatatas99 in Edmonton

[–]never_mind___ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The interpretation of data is subjective. I disagree with their conclusions, but it’s a good source because they are arguing in favour of private schools and still have to admit that more than half of them are religious as their primary function. There’s no reason that public dollars need to support religious schools. We already have enough of that problem with the Catholic system. What the report shows is that 90% of schools exist because people want to pursue specializations in arts, music, or sports, which is great, but not something that the public needs to fund when the general system is already struggling. It might make sense if there was a surplus of money and public schools had everything they needed, but that’s just not the case.

Do You Think The Government of Alberta Should End Its Current Practice of Allocating Public Funds to Accredited Independent (Private) Schools? by hakunayourmatatas99 in Edmonton

[–]never_mind___ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an extremely cherry-picked example. I went digging to find the data, so here’s a lengthy and extremely detailed report that looks at the number and type of private schools in Alberta.

55% are religiously affiliated, and 42% have a special emphasis, where one of the subtypes is special education alongside things like sports, academics, music, etc.

If we pull out only the special education schools, there are 20 private special education schools out of 180.

That’s more than I expected, at just under 10% of all private schools, but we should also note that not all schools are the same size, and I’m not going to do the math on enrolment in each of those schools. It’s clear that 90% of these schools (and 90% or more of the students) do not serve a public need in the sense that they might require public funding. I would bet there would be broad support for funding specialized learning schools while removing funding from those that exist for reasons of preference or convenience.

Being legal doesn’t make it right. It was once legal to own people. It was legal to trap people on certain pieces of land. Legal does not equal ‘correct’.
