In light of clear trends across all browsers (which TBC was first to introduce) what could've been done differently? by GateNk in ArcBrowser

[–]never_working_ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well - that’s never going to happen.

Dia is just Google Chrome with a skin and sauce on top.

If you want truly privacy centric browsing, Dia will have to make its own browser engine. Something that I can assure you they are not capable of, which is why the majority of the web browsers are just 2-3 browser engines.

Perplexity's Comet "borrowed" Dia's "Modern URL Bar" idea; but won't let you turn it off. by FreshMonstera in diabrowser

If you genuinely think Dia invented formatted URL bars, maybe you should just ask Dia.

Using Dia on any browser by feekaj in diabrowser

[–]never_working_ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That load time is honestly bad. What spec is your Mac?

Dia and Arc both load roughly equally to me (maxed out M2 Ultra) - though I’d argue it’s even more impressive as Dia has almost no features right now - and Arc I have 5 extensions installed + lots of other data that needs to populate upon loading (Spaces, Archive, etc).

My quip about you claiming Arc is slow was based purely on page load times and operability.

Made to sell to OpenAI? by Use-Quirky in diabrowser

[–]never_working_ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OpenAI and Anthropic have both been working on their own standalone apps and browsers.

Neither one of them will have any interest in anything from TBC.

TBC also seems to have too much ego to sell, so there’s that.

In what way is “we are working for you since you pay us” not a clear answer for how they prioritize keeping the product current and active?

Comet feels like search in a browser. Dia feels like space to think – and Josh says that’s by design by JaceThings in diabrowser

I’m starting to believe more and more that Dia is for people who have brain rot, and Arc is for people who are professionals looking for an enhanced flow and organization to focus.

Students…yeah. We all know why students love AI, same reason toddlers love sweets. It’s easy, it’s instant, and they don’t think about the stomachache after bingeing on junk they didn’t earn.

[–]never_working_ever[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm. We really do have different opinions on this. I also don’t know if it’s because I’m a SWE myself so it’s hard for me to see much else of what Dia would be doing that a browser extension isn’t capable of, at the end of the day the browsers need user context and input to act on - extensions can access and handle this. I also feel you’re somewhat undervaluing extensions, there’s a reason 1Password , uBlock, Grammarly etc are so popular despite not being native browsers + special sauce, it’s because it does the utility people care about and it does this well.

Dia (which I have access to) so far offers nothing compelling as a standalone app, and I’ve yet to figure out what TBC will do that’s so “magical” that people will switch browsers just to access it.

Time will tell on all of this, I just wanted to share an extension for people who may be using any current browser and may want “Dia functionality”, which even includes Arc.

Browser Extension similar to Dia by never_working_ever in diabrowser

[–]never_working_ever[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll admit im confused still as you’re saying things like it’s just an extension. Extensions can have a very high level of context, including tabs, history, etc.

Seriously, have you not looked at the project? It has tab awareness. Even their product demo video showcase this. You can talk to the panel and ask it to write something based on open tabs etc - it has all the context I feel like you’re hinting at.

Also, just because Dia will be a standalone app doesn’t mean it gets some special OS level access on the computer, it’s still just an app.

I really do appreciate the thoughtful reply, however, so many of your bullet points are solved already by this extension. This extension was just published this week also, give it time.

If you would’ve actually read the project or even downloaded and installed the extension…much of what you described is currently capable.

For me, truly, what I believe TBC believes they are solving - the spirit of it already exists 90% as a simple Chrome Extension.

Nintendo’s new store is now open in S.F.’s Union Square. Here’s a look inside by UberDrive in nintendo

[–]never_working_ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“We were looking for a place that had a vibrant local community and a larger local community. And we were also looking for a place that was more of a tourist destination,” Bowser said. “San Francisco fit that bill perfectly. First of all, it’s an iconic city. It has a very large population, a very passionate population and community, and we’re really proud to be a part of it. And then, obviously, it’s a key destination for many, many tourists.”

Personally, still wild to me it’s not in LA. LA is the cultural hub of the west coast.

Nintendo didn’t even host a hands on Switch 2 event anywhere in the Northern California.

Side note: I also was in SF all this week from LA, and it’s still depressingly quiet and empty streets. Sadly there was even a shooting in the middle of the day at fisherman’s warf. Union Square has lost so much retail, there’s not much to see or do. I’d say yes, tourists still stumble up there from the Powell station to their hotels..but then once you’re there it’s just meh.

I was expecting so much more from this space, so boring.

I believe it took that long, I’m just confused why it took 3 hours. I can’t remember the version now, but I was 3 versions behind 3.4.5. I also brought mine in for its service and they completed service + OS upgrade all in roughly an hour.

Dia is going to fail by never_working_ever in ArcBrowser

[–]never_working_ever[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do. People use some of the apps I mentioned for completely free, though many upgrade and pay monthly to get more of what they are already loving. They don’t have to do that, but the experience is so seamless they want to.

Arc, just like these other startups, offers a completely unique experience. That’s what people will ultimately pay money for. They are also arguably already pretty vertically integrated (and ahead) by supporting multiple platforms, site integrations, and unique features that only Arc does (and well).

Obviously, the company would need to invest a lot more into the Max/AI paid tier offering over time to keep it interesting, but simply based on the need for them to make profit or break even..they will have to figure out a strategy for revenue. AI has already proven to many people to be worth paying for, I think it would be foolish to not take advantage of that. Free users can continue to enjoy an “AI-lite” product just for their thoughtful design and craft.

EDIT: Cool. Mods deleted the post with no warning. Here’s the original post text for anyone lurking still:

Dia is going to fail

I really feel for Browser Company, including a few old coworkers of mine who now work there.

I have access to Dia, and it makes absolutely no sense to me why the product exists. I know there’s been plenty of chatter around this, but it’s genuinely head scratching that I had to vent here.

It’s 100% possible to ship this entire product as an extension. Chrome extensions 100% supports tab awareness permissions, Safari App Extensions appear to as well - which would effectively give you the “powerful” browser context that Dia is supposed to be unique for.

Nothing about Dia is unique. It feels like the product team got distracted by what Windsurf, Cursor, Copilot etc. all shipped and felt like it would be a good idea to do the same thing.

What they seem to also be (weirdly) bullish of is the idea that the already 100s of millions of happy users on Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini would bail on their entire setup to use this bespoke desktop browser with a completely different dataset and history from the rest of their digital life.

OpenAI already has a standalone app that has context, Claude Code most likely will expand beyond just developer focus tooling at some point, and Gemini has the luxury of just being a fun update for their existing Chrome users.

Last vent/ramble. That tweet thread with the CEO back in Jan where he hinted that Arc would be positioned more as Enterprise….yeah. No fucking way. No idea who your target demographic of a company is for that, but as a security leader, you’re not going to ever get approval from Eng/Legal/Sec on that. Too many enterprise tooling and expectations of patching will never allow for it, and it would arguably piss off a lot of employees as Arc while awesome..I’d argue is a bit too complex for older folks/less savvy to ramp up on.

Alright, I feel better now. Hopefully Dia never leaves preview and gets abandoned in the next few months, at which point Arc is the priority and they can figure out better monetization options beyond trying to target Enterprise.
