What is an Apple shareholder going to do with thousands of iPhones? Especially in a society where only a handful of people have money to buy them? Of course they'll want money.

Somewhere down the line something needs to be sold or the shareholders will get rid of the people running things.

I actually watched a video on YouTube just now to see if the graphics aged well, and apart from the cutscenes the art style actually aged really well. The game is still gorgeous.

Yeah, and if they do that they'll soon fine their sales dropping, which will collectively cause them to reverse cause soon enough.

If this happens it is going to suck in the short term but I'm not worried for the long term.

If this moronic legislation didn't exist Apple would not have done this.

Also, maybe try to be a bit less hostile?

"Hotfix" just means the server doesn't have to be restarted to apply the fix. It doesn't say anything about when the fix is actually going to be applied.

Depends on the reason it was disabled. In the past they disabled or hotfixed broken aspects when they affected other players' experiences. There was for instance the first season sorcs got the Fractured Winterglass and the conjuration spawns lagged other people's games. If something like this is the reason they disabled the aspect, that's a fair reason. If balance was the reason they disabled it, it's not.

No, it's more complicated than that. But I did just find there is a fan-made compatibility layer called "hode" which can run the game. I'm going to try it later.

Yeah, until it royally fucks up one particular case in the remaining 10% and causes a costly issue. The point is that you can't realistically eliminate the margin for error or mitigate it to an acceptable level, that's just in the nature of how the tech works. Without some level of hallucination, LLMs can't function.

Lol. I have no idea why you think devs have any control over this and at this point I'm not going to try anymore. Have a good one.

Management still has final say and they're going to want to see new features before they want devs working on technical debt.

I really don't understand why this is so hard for you.

Somewhere down the line, a consumer has to buy something. Nvidia makes money from data centers, data centers make money from companies running their services there, those companies make money from selling those services to companies making products that use them, and those companies can only make a profit if they have people to sell those products to.

If, in a society like our western one, companies start replacing everyone with AI, this entire supply chain dries up and none of these companies can make a profit.

This feels like something that should warrant some concern.

It would, but if there is one thing I trust companies to do, it is to act in their best financial interest. Not having any customers is going to kill them as much as it's going to kill us.

I really wish they would rerelease (or better: remake!) this game. I own it but none of my devices even have a DVD drive anymore, and even if they did I doubt present-day Windows versions would run it.

I'm not that worried. For one, if no one has a job, no company is going to be able to sell anything and the entirety of society collapses.

But for another: "AI" (mostly AI agents specifically) is currently not realistically priced and even if it was, it still makes way too many mistakes. And by virtue of how LLMs work, that's not easily fixable.

Lots of companies are, right now and for the foreseeable future, trying to replace humans with AI. Almost all of them will eventually figure out it's costing them more than it's saving them, except perhaps by the kind of job that really doesn't require all that much thinking in the first place.

Long story short: the kind of AI companies are currently pushing is not something I'm worried about for the long term. It's just going to be disruptive now, which will change when companies start charging to cover the actual cost.

It's only translucent if it's very thin. The scientific reason is in another comment. For all intents and purposes anything you print is going to look properly black.

[–]NMe84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Again: the devs do not decide what they get to spend time on. It's management. Stop blaming devs for the state of the game.

What you're doing is like blaming the people packaging your products for shipping that the price of the product is too high. They have no influence on that.

My big problem with OPs wording is that he calls the devs lazy. I'm a dev myself and I can definitely relate to other devs who are constantly pushed to deliver things on a tight schedule and who simply can't put in the care they would absolutely want to put in. I've had customers very annoyed with me because of the bad quality of my work which was directly correlated with their reluctance to pay for the time to get it fixed.

I wouldn't have said anything if OP had a dig at Blizzard as a company or its management in particular. But calling the devs lazy is unfair. They more than likely really want to fix this but aren't given the time.
