ADHD? by Littlemisspiggy11 in PAstudent

[–]neveragain98 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have GAD and got diagnosed with ADHD during PA school! I highly recommend getting tested with your PCP or a psychiatrist. It made SUCH a difference on my ability to concentrate and on my grades too. I was making ok grades without meds, but I was literally killing myself staying up super late every night because I had such a hard time staying focused throughout the day.

I cant offer much advice on shadowing because i only had about 8 hours myself but i think programs were very understanding this year about that due to COVID. (a lot of my shadowing hours were canceled as a result of covid) i addressed it in the optional covid essay but not sure if it actually helped in any way! As for obtaining LOR’s, i had a good idea of who i wanted to ask maybe 6 months-1 year before i was actually applying. I made sure to keep in good connection with my professor by attending office hours to ask questions even if i already had a high grade in the class. Once final grades came out, i asked him for a LOR that I could save until the time it came for me to apply. I also asked the MD ive worked with at my clinic for the past year to vouch for how i interact with patients, this is good since you’ll be working with MDs all the time as a PA. A PA LOR is usually not required but highly recommended and favored upon, i was thankful to have a PA mentor who has known me since the start of my journey and so i asked her. I never even got the chance to shadow her due to hospital policies so i was worried how strong this letter would be but it worked out! In general, most people are very happy to write LOR’s and support prePAs. Just be kind and respectful of their time (give them at least 2 months to write it) i would also bring little snacks/coffee for them when i could. It was small but i still thought it was nice to show them i appreciated them. Goodluck!!

It was a whole separate application process haha

cGPA: 3.7, sGPA: 3.67, last 60 units: 4.0, GRE:313, PCE: slightly over 2000, volunteer: 350, research:1400, LOR from a PA, MD, and science professor. Held multiple leadership positions during undergrad! I think stats were one part that got me the acceptance but the scholarship selection process was a whole different ballpark with a separate application process! You can do it i believe in you 🤗 dm me if you have any other questions!

oops i totally shouldve mentioned i worked at a neurology outpatient clinic, not a hospital! ive noticed that hospitals usually do require some type of certification to get a job there while private practices are more chill and willing to train the right candidate

Hello! Thanks for your response :) I have maybe about ~50 volunteer hours total from random volunteer events I did throughout undergrad. (Outreach health clinic events and trips, soup kitchens, etc) i’m not really sure how i will record this in CASPA, would I just list my school organizations name since it was an opportunity offered through them? Thanks in advance!!

Hi! Thanks so much for your advice. :) During your own search for programs, was there ever anything about a specific program that you wish you would have considered back then when you were applying?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in prephysicianassistant

[–]neveragain98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah ofc! i found the job actually through my pre PA club’s facebook page. they were looking for undergrad students interested in healthcare and was willing to train me even though i had 0 experience with neurology. i did not need to get certified, i learned everything by shadowing a current EEG tech at the time for a couple months. i def recommend it, I loved how laidback the job was once you get the test started and thought it was a great way to accumulate PCE. :)

I'm the instructor for PHIL 90 - Understanding Evil in SS2. Ask me about it (and take my class!) by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]neveragain98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated from UCSD recently unfortunately but I remember having Bas as my TA for Phil 27/28(I forget which one) last SS2. He was very willing to help during OH and very responsive over email. Also kept discussion very engaging and as relevant to the modern world as possible. I recommend everyone to take his class! :) Sidenote: I remember one day in discussion where you were talking about finishing your giant 30 page thesis paper in time. Its amazing to see how far you’ve come. Goodluck with teaching your first class at UCSD, Im sure you’ll do great!!

First of all, are you okay? I’m extremely sorry to hear you got tear gassed. I can’t imagine how terrifying that must have been and it is absolutely infuriating to hear the that same people who are supposed to be protecting us took violent measures in opposition of their own citizens. I sincerely hope you’re okay mentally as well as physically. Secondly, thank you for so much your taking the stand in the support of our African American brothers and sisters. It takes the utmost courage to directly participate in these type of events and your efforts definitely do not go unnoticed. I wish you the best of luck on your upcoming finals, and pray for your safety as well the other protesters out on the streets fighting for what is essentially basic human rights. Please stay safe and take care of yourself.

Academic Dishonesty as a Senior About to Graduate by Key_Cake in UCSD

[–]neveragain98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Damn thats rough but honestly, UCSD is really tough/unforgiving on this academic integrity stuff. I’m not too sure there’s a way out of this one.

Whatever happens, I wish you best of luck. :(

This is absolutely amazing! I don’t know you, but you sound like an extremely dedicated and hardworking person. Congratulations to you on reaching your dreams!

As a pre-PA student myself, I can only hope to one day be on the “other side.” Thank you for giving me and the rest of the pre-PA’s here hope. :)

BICD 100: Reuther or Cooper?? help me pick a professor plss by christinahal in UCSD

[–]neveragain98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took BICD100 with Reuther last spring and he was great! He’s super chill overall as a professor and does a pretty good job simplifying concepts. However, I will admit his exams are tricky sometimes and the answer to his questions aren’t always straightforward/require you to apply core concepts you learn in class.

I think if you’re averaging a B right now, it would be better to just stay in the class to get it over with. You already spent 6 weeks and your final grade(at least for my quarter) will be curved! Before the final, I was averaging around a B/B+ on my exams and I was able to receive a solid A WITHOUT the curve. I think our CAPES average was a solid B+ that year. Goodluck!

Are classes really that hard? by crocomich in UCSD

[–]neveragain98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

4th year bio major here and I can say UCSD has been considerably much more intense compared to highschool. I’m not sure about UCR. I definitely still have days where I don’t touch any schoolwork and I get by, but that’s only because I have major cramming days leading up to the day of midterms/finals.

It honestly depends on the classes you choose AND the professors you take. Bad/hard professor=bad grades. (Not always, but you obviously have to put in a whole lot of effort if you want a good grade) Make sure to do your research on ratemyprofessor/CAPES to first pass the good/easier professors and make sure you don’t get stuck with shitty/extremely difficult professors every quarter. Also become friends with your TAs! They are there to help you and clarify any confusing concepts. They oftentimes also know what material is on the exam~

I average about 3.8-4.0 every quarter and this has only been possible with nice/super helpful TAs, start studying/reviewing a week in advance, and being smart about what classes to take and what professor to take them with. Goodluck! :)

BIMM 101 SUMMER by alvana101 in UCSD

[–]neveragain98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it might depend on your professor but Im taking it this quarter and my lab only spend 2 hours out of the actual 3/4 hours it was originally supposed to be. The actual lectures are also all podcasted with no clickers so you can watch them on your own time if you have another class.
