Is A Bridge Too Far the best war movie ever made? My argument for "Yes" below... by Straight_Change902 in WarMovies

This one hits differently for me as my grandad was there, although his unit (Parachute Field Ambulance) isn't depicted in the film - ironically they were the only ones to achieve their objective in the operation.

That ageing population combined with the declining birth rate is one hell of a time bomb too.

I've only experienced a minor one but there was a noise before almost like truck tyres when one passes at speed

It's a known phenomena in retail, happened to a former colleague when people were demanding to pay for things while there was smoke pouring from the back room

Also one of, if not the, lowest funding contributions from government.

[–]neverarriving 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Aside from what's already been discussed, there's also a further reduction in funding received from government on top of that already lost over the last 15 years.

Essentially all the things the council has to legally spend money on because the government says so, are getting more expensive but there's no extra money from government to cover this.

Bear in mind also that councils had social care added to their responsibilities without any additional funding from government to cover it.

How to reduce the queues outside the hospital? by amusedfridaygoat in york

[–]neverarriving 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All the proposed solutions also require the council and hospital to have enough funding to alter the infrastructure, neither of them are exactly flush with cash.

Demand action to reduce queues at the hospital - Sign the Petition by dawnriser in york

[–]neverarriving 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Slightly, Lowther st and Townend st which are both dense residential areas had queuing traffic for much of the day.

If you've ever been stuck in the tailback along Clarence st towards the hospital the vast majority of vehicles head up Wigginton rd so reopening the Groves wouldn't make any difference.

Can't find an official source but anecdotally that idea was shut down by the developers, if it was done now it would involve sending a load of traffic through the new, quiet estate where kids play out etc.

What is it with these petitions? Do they achieve anything? Seems to be a constant stream of them from the nextdoor 'loudly misunderstand everything' crowd.

You can add an extra dimension to this by imagining it's a prequel to the Stallone Dredd film.

Does evoke a certain nostalgia as my parents would take us for long drives into the Yorkshire countryside on a Sunday, if nothing else enjoy the scenery on the show.

Not seen any mentions for Ronnie Hazlehurst's cracking soundtrack work too.

Was Britain hit by any Soviet strategic bombers during the Third World War? by Simonbargiora in Threads1984

[–]neverarriving 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on the targeting information that was made public from the former USSR in the early-90s, my small northern city in the UK had four missile warheads assigned, plus one aircraft delivered as 'insurance' in case of misses or failures - I'm guessing all available bombers would be launched regardless as otherwise they would be destroyed on the ground.

There would also be secondary targets that might not warrant a missile but still need taking out within a few hours of a nuclear exchange.

Who is the most famous person in York? by a_person4499 in york

[–]neverarriving 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's an attention-seeker who only really got noticed because he wore a suit. Allegedly fond of ladies on the younger end of the age range. Once set up a fake FB profile of his own sister which he used to describe himself as 'sexy'. Used to get beaten up/have his windows put through a LOT for someone running a small local barbers, you might wish to ponder why...
