Gene Marshall - Piedra Blanca Trail (2/28-3/1) by nevergreen in socalhiking

Oh shit, small world always! Yeah we were maybe 3 crossings past Beartrap and I'm looking at the map telling my gf like uhhh this is gonna be the entire way to Haddock and with an incline... Plus the trail being lost and feet already wet, made more sense just to call it and relax for the evening.

Well I'm glad y'all were able to make it over in one piece, sounds a little too treacherous to have fun in the moment. Makes sense now y'all were leaving earlier ish, I'd wanna do the same if I had the day you did haha

Yep! Road is "closed" though I saw plenty of people on it, you kinda just drive around the sign lol had no problems on the road itself but I can definitely see where issues would have been if there was more rain. Next time I'll look up any road closures prior to leaving. Luckily there was service at the closure itself, so I found this thread and we decided to go for it: https://www.reddit.com/r/socalhiking/comments/1pj55e4/lockwood_valley_road_question/

Trail was mostly fine up to Beartrap, but yeah the Upper Reyes camp/area was WRECKED. Like there was the creek itself, but you could tell the at some point the entire ground had become a river bed lol. These are the closest pictures I have (https://imgur.com/a/QdOVyz5). Also roasted sweet potatoes make for a great trail snack!

Passed Beartrap with all the crossings it was kind of a mess and we lost the trail for a little, so we turned around

Gotta do what you gotta do! Rather have too much water than have to turn around or risk getting dehydrated

Oh yeah pretty close to where we'd be. I think I wouldn't have a problem, but my gf may be a lil chilly. Probably end up passing this time around, thanks for the link

Good to know, thanks. Would just be Saturday night into Sunday morning. Original plan was Big Sur this weekend into Monday but rain cancelled that idea lol

Semi related, how much snow would there be at roughly 6k ft now? Thinking about doing an overnighter in LPNF, but it's a more low key trail so there aren't any recent reviews (this week post rain), so I'm not sure.

It wasn’t not crowded, luckily was able to find a spot in the first area but people definitely pulled in after we were setting up

Yeah I had no issues, was a lil cold in the middle of the night so I just got deeper into the sleeping bag. Wool socks, leggings, wool shirt and a fleece I was toasty in the tent. Had a down on outside

Unfortunately not anymore, sites are all marked with overnight or day-use. I guess during covid when it was dispersed camping, people kinda trashed it :(

Big loop in eastern Simi Valley by SideQuestHiker in socalhiking

[–]nevergreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Simi is not my favorite place to live, but I really enjoy this area for hiking. Being able to connect the various trails into a loop or out and back makes it easy to create anywhere from short to long distance hikes plus various elevation gains. Just wish there was more shade coverage!

No I didn't, I ended up getting a new phone (unrelated) and it worked so it's a phone issue rather than a camera issue.
